Teen Confesses To Fake Murder In Crank Call

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A Clarksville teenager's fake murder confession sent authorities scrambling for hours.

The 13-year-old thought it would be funny to confess to a murder that never happened.

He used a cell phone to place a prank call to a missionary training center in Provo, Utah.

The call was so disturbing those on the other end knew they had to find the child.

Police believe the teenager intended to call that particular number.

"Hi, this is Jared, thank you for calling for your free Book of Mormon from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," answered a worker at a missionary training center on the campus of Brigham Young University.

Clarksville police said the teen knew exactly what he was doing.

"He gave a name. It wasn't his correct name, well, the last name was correct, not the first name," said Clarksville Sgt. Cheryl Anderson.

The teenager told one lie after another.

"I wanted to talk to somebody and tell them my mother died and I really need God in my life right now," the 13-year-old said during the phone call. "I shot my mom."

"Don't call the cops," the young caller said.

The call turned out to be a big joke, but Clarksville police were not laughing.

"No, no," Anderson said. "There were a lot of resources used thinking we had another homicide. You have officers, detectives searching for something that didn't occur."

It took nearly eight hours to track down the prankster. He made the call from a pre-paid cell phone.

The teenager lied about his name, age and where he lived. He said he lived on Evans Road, but there's an Evans Road in Clarksville and in other cities in Middle Tennessee.

Police said the teenager's mother was alive and well.

This is so sad. When I was young, I would have never dreamed of doing anything like this. When I was a kid I was afraid to step on a crack (because everyone said you would break your mother's back! :) )

You know the saying about not joking about something because it might come true.

People around here are wondering if this kid is a member.

Well, thankfully he was foolish enough to give his real last name so they could track him down faster!

I doubt he was a member, but maybe....he could have seen an LDS commercial and thought someone would talk to him, but decided to say what he said.

Either way, he really needs help, doesn't he? I hope he gets it.

The kid did it as a prank. He thought it would be funny. I know you all know that but it's hard for me to understand why anyone would consider it funny.

OH, I see what you mean Dr. T....I don't get it either. Well, I do in a way, he probably hasn't got an active father/father figure in his life, how much would anyone bet on that???

Very unfortunate for him.
