When I took the missionary lessons way back in the 1990s the Sisters told me it was South America, and also that Lehi sailed west over the Atlantic instead of east over the Pacific. This coloured my none-too-attentive reading of the BoM and I got the impression that "Bountiful" must have been somewhere in West Africa - Morocco perhaps. It's only since coming to this forum that I discovered it was a Pacific crossing - which actually makes more sense as the Pacific has many islands and the journey could have been made in short "hops".

Correct (in my opinion). It says they followed the Red Sea in a "near east" direction. Bountiful is likely what is now modern day Yemen/Omen. If they sailed across the Pacific, they would need to go around Africa. Doesn't make much sense x)
