Like Charles Stanley, John McArthur, read books by Chuck Swindoll and RC Sproul?

I ask this because I find that some of their teachings and topics they talk about have real value and relevance of truth in them. They talk about things that I have not heard any General Authority talk about.

For instance, I was listening to a radio program that someone referred me to listen to and it was about Confession of Sin and it is interesting how such people truly talk and share about what they are talking about.

I am curious because as I am struggling to return back to the LDS Faith, I am curious if I have to give up listening and reading such great men of God.

Hello Seattle...

I just finished listening to Charles Stanley... he's one of my favorites... and I'm about as TBM as they come... there's another man from a ministry called Shepherd's Chapel I enjoy that answers questions that people write in about the bible... I admire him because he will not answer questions or read comments about any particular denomination or Church... strictly the bible. I find we are almost always in agreement...almost...

The way I handle it is that I'm well versed enough in our own doctrine/faith that I can listen and enjoy those things that I can take from such people that resonate with me, and simply let other things go. I don't think I've ever heard any of our leaders say we shouldn't take in uplifting things from various sources, as long as they are testaments of Christ and not in oppositition to our teachings. In fact, BY gave quite a discourse on this saying how there was threads of truth to be found in the Methodists, the Baptists, in science, etc., and we should be able to take those things and include it in our knowledge.

I would encourage you to study the gospel and strengthen your testimony, and then you can enjoy varied sources of uplifting information, taking some things, and leaving some...

Edit to add... Seattle...several years ago in the Teachings of the Presidents... Brigham Young... RS/PH manual pages 16-18, BY is quoted, stating in part: "The gospel of Jesus Christ embraces all truth... "Mormonism," so-called enbraces every principle pertaining to life and salvation, for time and eternity. No matter who has it... The truth and sound doctrine possessed by the sectarian world, and they have a great deal of it, all belong to this Church. All that is good, lovely, and praiseworthy belongs to this Church and Kingdom... The gospel embraces all morality, all virtue, all light, all intelligence, all greatness and all goodness. It introduces a system of laws and ordinances... Such a plan incorporates every system of true doctrine whether it be ecclesiastical, philosophical, or civil... It is our duty and calling, as ministers of the same salvation and Gospel to gather every item of truth and reject every error. Whether a truth be found in professed infidels, or with the Universalists, or the Church of Rome, or the Methodists, The Church of England, the Presbyterians, the Baptists, the Quakers, the Shakers, or any other of the various sects and parties, all of whom have more or less of truth, it is the business of the Elders of this Church to gather up all the truths... to the sciences, and to philosophy, wherever it may be found in every nation, kindred, tongue and people, and bring it to Zion."

So Seattle, I say we should steep ourselves in the Gospel doctrines, strengthen our testimony, and continue to enjoy those things from other sources that are true and uplifting...

Essence of Missionary Service from lds.org

“Let me say that we appreciate the truth in all churches and the good which they do. We say to the people, in effect, you bring with you all the good that you have, and then let us see if we can add to it. That is the spirit of this work. That is the essence of our missionary service” (meeting, Nairobi, Kenya, 17 Feb. 1998).

Thank you all for your comments here.

I am going through and reading some articles at the lds.org website and it is good to have access to the church magazines online.

What I like is they are all in audio -Mp3. I download them into my mp3 player and listen to them as I do my household chores - at work and when I drive.

I am a big fan of Chuck Swindoll...Read below

...If there is anything that is of good reprot...we seek after these things. (!3th Article of Faith)

If however this leads you away from the "fullness" of the gospel, be careful.

Same here. I try and catch him all the time.

James Dobson is also one I like. KSL radio even airs one of his Family in Focus shows daily or weekly.

We accept truth from whatever source it may come. One of my favorite religious thinkers is Rene Girard, a Catholic. The LDS do not have a monopoly on truth--we can learn a lot from others. God loves all His children and gives us all what knowledge we'll accept.
