This is a thread that Drewm777 posted on MADB and I thought it was wonderful. I think it would make a great discussion here.

I have a student going to the temple this weekend. I emailed her a scripture list of things I thought would be helpful for her. I thought it would be nice to share with you. Please add any scriptures that you have found useful. Don't talk about temple content, please. Scripture references with brief explanations only, please.

General Reading

Genesis chapters 1-3

Abraham 3:21 through chapter 5.

Isaiah 28:9-10

Read about the "Abrahamic Covenant"

Initiatory and Endowment

Exodus 28:40-42

Exodus 40:12-15

Leviticus 8:6-7, 10, 12-13

Psalm 24:3-4

Psalm 54:2

Psalm 72:8 (The Lord Jesus in a millennial day will finally have dominion over the entire earth. He will reign "from the rivers to the ends of the earth.")

Isaiah 22:20-25 (read footnote 20a)

Isaiah 56:5. (There is a translation error in this verse. The word translated "place" is "yad" which means literally "hand." The Lord promises to give them "a hand and a name" in the temple.)

Isaiah 61:10

Ezekiel 16:6-10 (Israel is personified here)

Matt. 7:7 (note the use of threes here: ask, seek, knock... given, find, opened..)

1 Cor. 11:3

2 Cor 13:1

Gal 6:17

Ephesians 5:22-25

Philippians 2:5-11

Colossians 3:18-19

Hebrews 10:19-22 (note the veil=Christ’s flesh)

1 Peter 3:7

Rev. 1:5-6

Rev. 2:17 (cf. D&C 130:10-11)

Rev. 3:20-21

Rev. 5:10

2 Nephi 9:41-42

D&C 76:56

D&C 124:39,95,97

Book of Abraham Facsimile No. 2 Fig. 3 commentary. Also Fig. 7 & Fig. 7 commentary.

Sealing

Matt. 19:6

1 Cor. 11:11

D&C 131:2-4

D&C 132:3-33

I think this is a useful way to prepare people for the temple. Maybe together we could come up with a great list of scriptures to give our friends and family when they go to help them better prepare and understand.

This is a bit off topic, but what is this MADB that I keep seeing all over the boards?

If you go back to your main page and google lds forums you will see a site call something like mormon apolig??and discussion board. It's another site. They like to argue over there and it gets old quickly. Just my opinion at the end there.

Mormon Apologetics & Discussion Board. Apologetics in the classical sense, meaning, defense. It's where the non-Mormon, ex-Mormon, and/or anti-Mormon folks come to play. Some are nice, many are not. It gets rough there.

I, too, appreciated Drew's list... Also, there are several books and articles available that are wonderful. First comes to mind is "Temple and Cosmos" by Hugh Nibley...I just finished the "temples" portion and it was wonderful... Then there is "House of Glory" by S. Michael Wilcox, available at Deseret Book Stores.

One article I liked was by John A. Tvedtnes via FAIR titled "Early Christian and Jewish Rituals Related to Temple Practices."

I think when one studies these writings, there is a greater appreciation and understanding of the symbolism used in the temple ordinances. Although I appreciated my temple prep classes and was comfortable with and enjoyed receiving the ordinances, I enjoy and appreciate them even more now.

The reason I put the list together is because I find comfort in knowing that much of what goes on in the temple is hinted at in scripture. Some troubling phrases ("reign from the rivers to the ends of the earth") are also found in scripture (see above). The scriptures give context to help us understand the temple, and the temple helps us understand the scriptures. I really think the endowment was put together for people who had and read and loved the scriptures and the other way around.

I agree. :)
