Alma 40

What a great Scripture Reading that contains hope depending how you are living your life prior to your death Alma the younger talking to his Son about the resurrection!

Alma 40 is a chapter in the Book of Mormon where Alma the Younger explains to his son Corianton about the state of the soul between death and resurrection, a period often referred to as the "state of the soul in happiness or in misery." In it, Alma clarifies that the spirits of the righteous are received into a state of happiness, called paradise, where they rest from all their troubles and sorrows. Conversely, the spirits of the wicked are cast out into outer darkness where there is weeping and wailing. Alma emphasizes that this is based on the justice of God.

Alma also explains that there is no definite knowledge about the precise time of the resurrection, but that the resurrection is a restoration; everyone will regain their perfect frame, and everything will be restored to its proper and perfect frame. This chapter offers comfort and clarification about the post-mortal existence and assures that the plan of happiness includes a resurrection and a final judgment.

What we call righteousness in modern English in ancient time meant “those willing” to covenant and those that honor and keep their covenants with G-d.  The term wicked was the opposite those that refuse to covenant or for whatever reason do not keep their covenants with G-d.

In the Book of Mormon, the term “stiff nick” is often used as a description.  I have pondered the meaning of this phrase and have concluded that it refers to those that will not bow their heads and say yes to accepting and keeping covenants with G-d.
