I wanted to find out how many of the LDS faith were in Australia...(stakes, churches, temples, nearest location and all that). Yay, there does appear to be a temple in most capital cities.

I came across a disagreement between the National Census numbers and the Church figures and felt a little confused by the difference in numbers. One of those topics I don't feel completely comfortable about posting on the forums, but I'm sure that investigators feel confusion about...so I thought I would open it up for comments for those who might be able to give me more of an idea on how numbers are collated.

The Cumorah Project is useful for this sort of information:

Cumorah Project LDS Mission Resources

Regarding Australia: Cumorah Project International LDS Database

LDS constitute about 0.2% of the population. Australians are not very religious, so the trend of low religious observation and church attendance is quite low, across the board.

A little informal history (from my memory). The Hamilton New Zealand temple was the first in the Pacific area, dedicated in 1958. Australians had to travel to New Zealand to go to the temple until 1984 (don't miss Rotorua's boiling mud in NZ if you ever visit!. LOL), when the Sydney temple was built. This is located at Carlingford, in Sydney's west. There are now temples located in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. When I served a mission in 1976-78 (to Adelaide), few (except the "dreamers") could conceive of a temple in Adelaide so relatively soon, but it happened. I was told by a member many years ago of the visit of Apostle Elder Spencer W. Kimball to Wollongong, which is 50 miles south of Sydney, in which he related that when Elder Kimball visited the small branch (at the time, in those days apostles ordained Seventy), he pointed to a hill beyond and said "that would be a great location for a temple". At that time members could scarcely even imagine a temple in Australia, yet here was Elder Kimball suggesting that we should set our sights on building one "on the hill" in our relatviely small city. Thanks to the "dreamers", we now have for LDS in Australia what was once thought "impossible", temples in most major cities.

Thanks Ray...clicking on old internet sites there didn't appear to be temples in some cities...it just took a bit of further googling to work out how that wasn't the case now. All that way to New Zealand...thankyou for sharing.

Hoosier are you asking where I am at: I'd rather be iron than golden I think? Iron as in knowing the word and having a bit of solidity, yes I know word in practice...working on the word bit. Not that I have much choice as I'm definitely not golden.

Just studying, learning and wondering what I am doing on the forums most of the time and thankful to the nice community here who puts up with me.

I have to admit I almost packed up my suitcase once in frustration...but I'm still here : ) I've realised that the frustration has a source.... 'me'.

I don't feel pressured and no one's out to convert me, just help. Wonderful people here.

Glad to catch up with you though, how's it all going?

I'm doing good. I love the Church! I love the LDS church! I love the

"Mormon" church! I love the True Church of Jesus Christ!

If I was next to you right now I would - grab you, shake you, yell

at you and say this - You knew Heavenly Father! You loved him!

You knew Jesus! You loved him! You are here on Earth in a body - that

means you chose to be on his side! Get back into the flock of Jesus!

Seriously, I would not do all that even tho I would want to.

Keep asking questions. I hope you are praying at least ever night.

I hope when you do pray you pray to our Heavenly Father. Please

open up your heart when you pray.

I'm pulling for you Wanderer. It was that quote you had under your posts

that I had in my mind when I was driving down to meet the missionaries for

the first time. I was nervous! Now - I'm going to be the greeter at the

chapel this Sunday!

I wish you would go to services at least once and try it out. Maybe

you can say this to yourself - I'm going to services this Sunday and then,

maybe in a month or two, go back for a second time if I want to.

I bet when you go once you will like it and will want to go back the very

next Sunday!
