I just finished reading Mormon. There are some powerful chapters

in this book. I almost had the same feeling, while reading 7, 8, and 9,

that I received when I was reading the last chapters of 2nd Nephi

back in December. It's like - the spirit comes out of the words and

jumps into my soul. Powerful stuff.

Chapter 9 particularly, it's like Mormon is begging, pleading, yelling,

commanding - repent! Take the Lord into your heart! Get baptized!

Anybody else find the last few chapters of Mormon really compelling?

You picked some great chapters HG. I am constantly finding my 'favorite' part of the BoM as my family and I read it together this year. I love 2nd Nephi 4. I love the last couple of chapters of 2nd Nephi after the Isaiah chapters (I love Nephi, period). Jacob's talk to his people. Alma, Amulek, Ammon, Omner, Himni, Aaron, Captain Moroni, Nephi on the tower, on and on and on.

When I was EQP several lives ago, I took two Sundays when I was teaching and taught Alma 5 and Moroni 7. We read it as a quorum and then discussed what it meant. To me (my opinion) Alma 5 and Moroni 7 lay out so perfectly what it means to be a member of Christ's church. Faith, Hope, Charity. Remembering Christ and keeping the commandments. Always remembering the covenants we have made. Taking care of the poor. Getting rid of envy, pride, etc.

I love all of the scriptures, but the BoM is something special.

I certainly do. =)

It was obtaining the promised witness found in the last chapter of Moroni that has been THE anchor for my testimony these many years, even through a season of neglect and inactivity, I never doubted or denied the witness, and that witness eventually helped bring me back into full activity.

I have also discovered that the book is centered in the person and presence of Jesus Christ - in obtaining a sure witness of Him, even the Second Comforter, through the power of the Atonement. That journey is where the real power of the book shines through. That is the doctrine of Christ:

6 Behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and there will be no more doctrine given until after he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh. And when he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh, the things which he shall say unto you shall ye observe to do.

I personally do not believe this is a reference to Christ's appearing to a group of people, but to each of us individually.

This is why everything in the Church is focused on new converts...the first principles and ordinances. Because after those things are understood and lived, Jesus Christ Himself, personally, is the one who leads and guides us into the "greater things" that lead to exaltation.

Mormon has become my biggest hero in the Book of Mormon since I became a parent - I hear people all around me at church say how hard it is to get our kids through things because of the trials they face, Mormon managed to raise Moroni the last man of God in the Book of Mormon. I read his books more avidly because if he could raise Moroni I can manage to raise my children in the gospel.

Love your post! I think this is the part of the Book where it all comes together. Love Mormon. He was truly mighty. Love how you describe the words jumping into your soul. Beautiful. I feel so much of the same.

Let's note that Moroni actually wrote chapters 8 and 9 of Mormon, believing he was finishing his father's record, and not knowing he would later add the writings of Ether, or his own book.

For me, chapter 9 is an amazing chapter. It starts by calling the Gentiles and others to repentance, telling them that the wicked would be happier in hell than in God's glory. He explains that all are resurrected and atoned by Christ - so that all will return to God's presence. It is in God's presence we will determine whether we are happy, or miserable and seek another kingdom.

To tell us that miracles and signs of the Spirit still occur, during a period when people no longer believe in such things, is amazing to me. Moses parting the Red Sea and Jesus' resurrection were far enough in the past to be believable; but the world will have no part in modern miracles, signs, and angelic visits!

And of course they don't experience these things. Faith is a necessary component to spiritual experiences.
