  1. Thank you everyone. I guess you have answered my question by not answering it clearly. There is no one place where I can find clearly spelled out what are the official doctrines of the LDS Church in searchable format. Thank you everyone for your help. -Carol
  2. You make my point-if I knew all the doctrines of the LDS Church-I would not be looking for them Exactly my point.
  3. I do have a "Triple" and I do read it. I took the time to purchase one-in leather yet-as I know it is your sacred texts-and I deeply respect what it contains. -so-nothing outside of the 4 sources you list-is considered doctrine? This includes things said by church prophets not included in those sacred texts? So-nothing at Church Assemblies said by the prophets would be doctrine? -I am not LDS-but I think you are mistaken--or am I? The catechism of the Catholic Church is totally searchable-and on-line-so you can find what you are looking for easily. Here is the searchable link: English Translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with Search Utility -Carol
  4. Link somewhat helpful. It also asks LDS members to search for themselves to understand if the LDS doctrines are true or not. "Individual members are encouraged to independently strive to receive their own spiritual confirmation of the truthfulness of Church doctrine. Moreover, the Church exhorts all people to approach the gospel not only intellectually but with the intellect and the spirit, a process in which reason and faith work together" Good point-but how do they do this if the doctrines are not made clear in the first place? Is there no place that lists the doctrines-except in general terms? -Carol
  5. So-no listing-no search? I have to look through the entire website? -Carol
  6. Very nice-I own a "Triple." but does not answer my basic question. -Carol
  7. Nice web site-gives a summary of beliefs-but no doctrine search capability-and nothing spelled out. Great multi-media. -Carol
  8. Thank You. I am aware of the basic teachings/doctrines of the LDS-and as you say "summed up" in the 13 statements. What I am looking for is something like my church-Catholic-and many other church groups have-a definitive listing or authorized authoritative work saying what the actual doctrines of the church are. We have the Catechism of the Catholic Church as source reference guide to our doctrines- I can find nothing similar in the LDS Church with a search capability to clearly see what those doctrines are--so there is much--- grey area. Different people on here and other LDS sites seem to disagree on what the doctrines of their church are---so I was looking for a definitive guide-so far nothing is available. -Carol
  9. Great multi-media site-but lacks search and nowhere could I find the doctrines of the church clearly defined. See my seperate thread on this subject. -Carol- a Catholic
  10. Site is better than the other-but the pull down menu for search-lists no section of Church Doctrine. It has listings for lessons, magazine articles, etc. Is there anyplace where this is clearly defined? -so far I am striking out. -Carol
  11. It is a great multi-media site-but lacks a search engine or any way to search what you are looking for. I can "ask a missionary"-but I would prefer a place to just find my answer. Without a search engine-the site is not helpful. -Carol
  12. What are the doctrines of the LDS Church? -I am on this site and others including Mormon Apologetics & Discussion Board -I read many posts by many members of the LDS Church-and I get some idea of LDS Church Doctrine. -I also get the idea that many members are not clear what is and what is not the official doctrine of the LDS Church. Some say "it just feels right." -is that doctrine? I am Catholic. I am aware that LDS has presidents/prophets with continued revelation-but what is doctrine? -I am aware of personal revelation to a person-but is that doctrine? What are the official teachings/doctrines of the LDS Church? -Where can this be found clearly? In the Catholic Church-despite our many problems and past checkered history-our doctrine is clear-and I can find it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as offocial pronouncements of the Catholic Church declared as doctrine by the Vatican. -So where can I find the official doctrine of the LDS Church-clearly spelled out? -If I ask 10 different missionaries-will they know?-or where to find a consistent answer? Is there an official web site with this can all be located and defined as doctrine? Thanks -comments and help wanted. -Carol
  13. Human life according to Catholic Doctrine begins at fertilization/conception. The Catholic Church opposes embryonic stem cell research, any form of birth control other than natural family planning. Most birth control pills which are hormones-inhibit fertilization in the first place-so I would not call that murder-nor would the Church. The "Day-after Pill" called U-47-does indeed have the potential to destroy a fertilized egg. -The Catholic Church would call that the destruction of a human life poential. The Catholic Church still opposes any form of birth control-as a natural creative act is being stopped by mankind. About half of Catholics practice some form of birth control-contrary to Church teaching. Misscarriages/still births and aborted fetus/zygote, etc-are given into the hands of a loving God. There would be no "mortal trial" for these "individuals." God did not cause their destruction. God is not the creator of abortion-which the Church calls "intrinsically evil." Misscarriages at any stage are natural events with many causitive factors-as are most deaths occuring at any stage of life. The Catholic Church opposes abortion. -Carol
  14. You do good research Dec. I have read some of the Holy Qur'an myself and am familiar with several of the Surah's. (In English- Surah means Degree or Step) The First- Al Fatihah- is the shortest as you know-and each one gets progressively longer in length. Surah 1:6 -asks the reader to be shown the straight path or straight way. Some of the Surah's after that read much like the Old Testament especially the Torah. Other parts read like much of what we call the New Testament. The Prophet Muhammed thought of Jesus as a great prophet. He was told that. Islam teaches that Muhammad was the last prophet. Surah 2:2 Al Baqarah (The heifer) talks about those who fear Allah (or God in our understanding) Much of the Holy Qur'an is about fear of Allah and following Allah by doing certain things-and you mention the 5 Pillars of Islam as a prime example. Works of Charity is one of the 5 Pillars. The Hajhe or Pilgrimage is another. One thing you will find largely missing from the Holy Qur'an is the word "Love" You will not find this word nearly as much mentioned in the Old Testament as the New Testament either considering the size of each. The Holy Qur'an reads much like the Old Testament. It also has much good to say about "The People of the Book-or the Jews. Like every religious tradition-Islam believes they have the truth. There is indeed much Truth found there. I complement on your research. Research is good-you are searching-that is good. Ultimately Religion is based on faith. You will find no final answer in your reading of the Holy Qur'an, The Bible, and other Sacred Texts of different faith traditions. You will find some Truth in each. So-What do you do? Ultimately as I said-anyone's spirituality or religion is based on Faith. What you find more of in the Bible-and especially the New Testament is the Word Love. As Christians-that is what it is ultimately all about. The Word became Flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is Love. Jesus said he is The Way. He indeed wishes us to keep on the Straight path-and shows us how. The Holy Qur'an said much good about Jesus as a great prophet and about his mother Mary too-but what you find more of in the New Testament than the Surah's of the Holy Qur'an is Love as expressed in the New Testament-and expressed most fully in Jesus. I cannot tell you which direction to go-but you are on the right track. Keep reading-and if you wish- Pray or meditate in what you have read. May God bless you in your search and may you find peace. Carol
  15. Hi-I happen to be Catholic-so I cannot answer from an LDS viewpoint. But-who owns the problem? Me? or my family member? In the case you give-it is their problem-not mine. I would never leave my faith tradition-as that is the most important thing for me. It represents my literal present and eternal destiny. If a family member wishes to disown me-that is their problem. I converted to the Catholic faith from Lutheran-and some family members were not happy with that-but they own the problem. My response can be one of love for them-but I would not change my faith or disown my faith for anyone-including a close family member. -Carol
  16. I love my Kindle! You can make the font bigger, you can use the Internet in a limited form-free, You can find dozens of sites where you can freely download free- public domain books-including the KJV of the Bible to Crime and Punishment by Dostyvesky--all free. You can pay and download books from Amazon -at a cheaper price than print-and you are saving paper in the process. Can improvements be made-sure-but if you are an avid reader-love books-Kindle is great! -Carol
  17. We have the same problem in the Catholic Church. Some things are clearly doctrinal-and some things many believe-but it is not defined as doctrine. Some of the Marian apparitions fall into this catagory. Some of the prophecies given to some of the Catholic mystics fall into this catagory as well. -Carol
  18. You may wish to ask the LDS Church to include it if official doctrine. In the Catholic Church-official publications-outside The Catechism- and official pronouncements from The Vatican---are not considered as doctrine.. -Doctrine for a Catholic must be defined as such by the leaders of the Church. I do not know the LDS Position-but with the same reasoning you give- would not everything then published in official publications-be doctrine? -Carol
  19. Making Sense and Doctrine are two different things-at least in the Catholic Church. -I would guess in the LDS Church too. -Carol
  20. The ultimate question-is where then did God/ Heavenly Father come from? We say Eternal-but that is a difficult thing to understand. Why would One God need a wife? Do the Hebrew scriptures teach that Heavenly Father had a wife? Do the Jews teach that today-or in the past? -if so where? Catholic Theology-which venerates the Blessed Virgin Mary- and considers her the "Mother of God" as we believe she is Jesus's Mother. Still-we do not place her in the Godhead/Trinity. So why does God need a wife? Did they have sex? -Carol
  21. Thank you for sharing such wonderful thoughts. Indeed we get so wrapped up in our "attachments" that we do not live. Here is a quote by Henry David Thoreau: "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." -Carol
  22. Perhaps we need to start a new thead on suffering. -Carol
  23. I do not know about Moral Equivalents-but Romans 13 speaks of Loving our neighbor and in verse 9-You shall not kill. Is it OK to resist authority-if we feel part of that authority is unjust? If the State allows abortion-is that OK? If the State allows euthanasia-is that OK? I agree killing an unborn child who has no voice is different than killing a convicted murderer by State action for the State-but are not States sometimes wrong? Should we not resist the State if we feel guided by our conscience and our Church that they are wrong? If we feel laws are unjust to the born and unborn--is it not our moral imperative to try to peacefully change those laws? -Carol
  24. I do not think we should kill a child of God before their birth-so I am against abortion. I do not think we should kill those with a terminal illness-so I am against euthanasia. I do not believe we should kill convicts. I do not believe we should kill the mentally challenged or physically disabled. I am not against natural death-my husband will soon face his-I am against a culture of death that does not value life. Carol
  25. Other than killing in acts of war-why cannot we be Pro-Life? Part of country seems to want to be Pro-life on some things-but Pro-death on others. To me-Pro-Life-means Pro-Life. Two states now -(Oregon and Washington State) allow medically legal suicide for terminally ill patients. My husband has a terminal illness-but he is very much Pro-Life. -Carol
