  1. My Church strongly encourages me to pray before any meal at any place and any time in thanking God for the food provided. Catholics traditionallly make the sign of the cross before and after any prayer before meals, although this ancient practice is not always followed. -Carol
  2. Sacred Scripture is clear on that marriage should be between a man and a woman. In Genesis-if there only were two people-Adam and Adam-that would pretty much end things If there only was Eve and Eve-the same end to things. Fortunately for us-there was Adam and Eve.--thus life continues. Carol
  3. Hi, I am a Catholic--what is the Endowment? Thank you. -Carol
  4. A Catholic Viewpoint. In some ways-the Catholic Church viewpoint is similar to the LDS Church. The Catholic Church has been one of the main supporters along with the LDS Church in oposition to same-sex marriages. The Catholic Church believes homosexual acts are "acts of grave depravity." (2357) The Catholic Church believes homosexual people are called to chastity: (2359) Here is an official Vatican link on the subject. Catechism of the Catholic Church - The sixth commandment See sections 2357-2359 on the document. Here is an entire official document on the subject of same-sex marriage from The Vatican: Considerations Regarding Proposals To Give Legal Recognition To Unions Between Homosexual Persons in part it says: 11. The Church teaches that respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behaviour or to legal recognition of homosexual unions. The common good requires that laws recognize, promote and protect marriage as the basis of the family, the primary unit of society. Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level as marriage would mean not only the approval of deviant behaviour, with the consequence of making it a model in present-day society, but would also obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of humanity. The Church cannot fail to defend these values, for the good of men and women and for the good of society itself. The Sovereign Pontiff John Paul II, in the Audience of March 28, 2003, approved the present Considerations, adopted in the Ordinary Session of this Congregation, and ordered their publication. Rome, from the Offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, June 3, 2003. Joseph Card. Ratzinger Carol
  5. I -Carol- was only responding to your request for information on the Catholic faith and nothing more. -Carol
  6. I do not think Internet conversion would work. I would ask that you contact a priest of your nearest Catholic Church and he can direct you further. Thank You for your interest in the Catholic faith. -Carol
  7. I have no problem of Jesus at the right hand of His Father-I just see Them as co-equal in all respects. I dont think the BoM was in existence at the time of the Nicene Creed-for that matter neither was the King James Bible. Some Apparitions/Appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary- (Our Lady of Lourdes, Fantima, Medjugorje, etc) with some prophesy of the Blessed Virgin Mary as given at those apparitions- are accepted by many in the Catholic Church-but to believe such prophesies-even attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary-The Mother of God-in the Catholic understanding of that term-are not a requirement of our faith. -Carol
  8. Yes-A priest submits himself to his Bishop and the Church at his ordination. At his ordination-the priest lays flat on the floor before the Bishop. The priest is at the bidding and total submission to his Bishop and the Church. An Archbishop-has only some extraordinary authority used in an emergency situation-like the sudden death of a Bishop-and no one in charge of a given area for a particilar time. An Arch-Bishop as the word states-is a Bishop. The Pope's other title is Bishop of Rome. At any Mass-even "celebrated by the Bishop, Priests are also asked to "con-celebrate" or take part in that same mass. As there is usually one leader of the service-that is usually the bishop if present. -Carol
  9. In the "office" concept you mention-is God the Father/ President and Jesus and the Holy Spirit as -Counselors? -Is Jesus and the Holy Spirit dependent or of lesser degree than God the Father/ president? In the LDS-Church are all 3 equal in power and authority?-or is one superior to the other two? -in the Trinity-all 3 are equal-so we would have 3 Presidents and no counselors-using that anaolgy-or is my analogy incorrect? We us the theological term "co-equal."
  10. Hi-Whatever "creed" we come out with-is indeed "our own making" For me, Sacred Tradition is important and for a member of the LDS Church The Book of Mormon and D&C would be important. Do we limit-in both cases-scripture to the Old and New Testament? In any case-such a "creed" or "articles of faith" would indeed be our own making, Both religious traditions believe that the Holy Spirit/The Heavenly Father and/or prophesy or sacred tradition is active within their religious community of faith. I often thought if you one could take just the OT and NT-and take it to a culture who never heard of any religion-to have them read the OT and NT--wth no prompting-and see what they come up with.-probably impossible to do-but would be interesting. Each of us comes to our religious tradition/faith with a particular bias/teaching of our faith based on our past and present experiences with it and other faith traditions we may have been exposed to. -Carol
  11. Please give and LDS.org link or similar for that. WOW! -and I don't mean a WoW (Words of Wisdom) WOW either. Definately not than the Catholic view of God. -Carol
  12. The quote you mention referrs back to Mark14 vs 62 -and in my New American Bible Jesus was asked if he was the Messiah-his response "I am--and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with clouds of heaven."
  13. Their theological beliefs were reflected in their practices. If they wished a tax exempt status-they had to play by the rules and limitations such tax exempt status provides. Here is their home page link: Bob Jones University ~ BJU
  14. Here is the court case document: Oyez: Bob Jones University v. U. S., 461 U.S. 574 (1983), U.S. Supreme Court Case Summary & Oral Argument It said in part: "These institutions did not meet the requirement by providing "beneficial and stabilizing influences in community life" to be supported by taxpayers with a special tax status. The schools could not meet this requirement due to their discriminatory policies. The Court declared that racial discrimination in education violated a "fundamental national public policy." The government may justify a limitation on religious liberties by showing it is necessary to accomplish an "overriding governmental interest." Prohibiting racial discrimination was such a governmental interest. Hence, the Court found that "not all burdens on religion are unconstitutional." -Carol
  15. The last time I looked-There is no metric time-but don't tell anyone or they may change that. Metric is a measurement of distance and weight. -Carol
  16. Some religious agencies accept government funds like Medicaid and similar-if they do that-the are subject to government regulations-thus the problem. A religious organization accepting government money or assistance in any form- may be challenged if they treat a same sex couple differently than a heterosexual couple. -So beware of government entanglements-however small. Churches that profess heterosexual marriages as part of their clear doctrine/teaching-do not have to marry same sex couples. Where the distinction of such a doctrine/teaching not being firm--as in some churches-that church/congregation may be challenged. -Carol
  17. Thankyou. Your post following mine is exactly what my post was focusing on. You clarified my position- with others thanks so much for your post. Carol
  18. Hi Jim, Thank you for your post. Yes, I try to not bash any other faith tradition as my faith teaches me to be tolerant to others and I make it a point to not judge others in any way. If I disagree with another-I will post my faith tradition and as much as possible with links to support my position. Ultimately our religion is about faith. As this is a LDS site-and I am a small minority on it-I have tried to learn the correct LDS faith position. I go onto official LDS sites like LDS.org. I puchased a "Triple" in leather yet-as I have deep respect for what my "triple" contains. I have tried to study the BoM and the D&C and I watch BYU-TV available on my DISH Network here. I am now a financial contributor to BYU-TV. I may disagree with some of the doctrines and teachings of the LDS Church-but I am here to learn and grow in in my faith and show deep respect toward others. I just simply ask that such respect is shown back to me. When I see that someone does not understand my faith-I will give information and links to present it correctly. Many people have incorrect views of the LDS faith tradition and many have incorrect views on the Roman Catholic faith tradition as well. Unfortunately-there are "ANTI" sites abounding on both faith traditions. "Anti" sites tend to be very negative and give an outdated or incorrect position of a faith position and present an incorrect or false view of it. I again-try to go to the source to understand the faith tradition of another. I am here to learn and grow and meet some very wonderful people. May our Heavenly Father bless each of us on our journey of faith. Carol
  19. Hi, Interesting post-I am glad that you know. The teachings of the Catholic Church and LDS are different-we can agree to that--but why such bashing of another's understanding of their faith. To deny that I know the Love of my Heavenly Father-is not for you to judge. Just because I do not know what happens to infants in a 100% way does not mean that I or my Church denies The Father. Differences of history/theology-sure-but why bash another faith? -This thread almost started with a fun joke-and degenerated to Catholic Bashing-in my opinion. It started positive-and went negative. -I realize I am in the minority here-but is my voice worth anything? See where the thread first went astray---and see my point. -Let's show some tolerance please. -Carol
  20. The Catholic Church has 2000 years of history-many times/places. I can only deal in the present and I cannot predict the future based on the past. So-yes-I disagree-as I cannot predict the future. I am glad you are a prophet-congratulations to you. -Carol
  21. As the Catholic Church believes in Apostolic succession, we believe the Bishop of Rome/The Pope is also an "Apostle." We sometimes use that term to designate the 12 original Apostles. We do not use that term as much as Pope or Bishop of Rome-which was his original title and still true today. -His formal Church/Cathederal is St. John Latern-in Rome CHURCHES OF ROME Do a search on Apostle at the following link and you will find dozens of parts from our Catechism on Apostle and what that means to us. English Translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with Search Utility -Great question-Thank You -Carol
  22. You must be a prophet-correct? You know what will happen to the Pope in a given future circumstance--wonderful! You know more than I do. -Carol
  23. Hi from Carol- Yes, our two faith traditions have much in common and much good both can do for a hurting world. Thankyou for your message: I am not here to debate --just give you the current understanding of the Catholic Faith. On the Catholic Faith-I suggest you first read and try to understand the basics of our faith by reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Here is a searchable link: English Translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with Search Utility A link on the current understanding of Baptism of Infants can be found at: CNS STORY: Theologians: Unbaptized babies in heaven makes more sense than limbo -enjoy your study. -Carol
  24. I am a Catholic-and your post is not in keeping with the current understanding of the Catholic Church. It is OK to disagree with me and my faith tradition--but please show respect. Catholics have the Mass/worship service in the language of the people for the last 40 years. Our services are not in Latin. In the US-they are in English and other languages of the people-like Spanish. Catholics do not believe that babies not baptized go to hell. -just two points-that you give which are not up to date or factual -Please consider taking a course or update in current Catholic doctrines and teachings before you post about them--I would be happy to give you several links. -If you disagree----fine, but do not slam another faith tradition than your own. -just not cool! Thank you Carol
  25. Hi-A Church can oppose same-sex marriages. Mine -Catholic-sure does. When any agency accepts federal or state money-they come under the rules of the state or federal government.-that is a problem for some religious organizations. A church can take moral sides on issues. They cannot take political ones that support by name or oppose by name any political party or candidate. A Church losing Federal Tax exemption would mean that a portion of tithes and offerings of that church-would go right to the government. Such Seperation of Church and State is a hallmark of our society-I would not like that lost. -Carol
