  1. Now, I think a mohawk that's long and spiked would be distracting for church, but the style in that picture isn't distracting to me at all. My non-member opinion is that Christ would have no problem with how a person wears their hair or how they dress, He loves everyone unconditionally, so if one is trying to be like Christ, they wouldn't be distracted by appearance.

  2. Unless the church starts paying for reduction surgery for anyone with large breasts, then it's still considered modest if the temple garments are completely covered, even if no matter what shirt she wears, there's a hint of cleavage. If a woman tries to hide her breasts by wearing shirts that are several sizes too big, then she looks like she doesn't care how she looks. As someone mentioned earlier, women who wear baggy sweats get more cat calls than someone who is wearing a sleeved shirt with a hint of cleavage. Obviously the church isn't going to start insisting on burkas anytime soon, as they consider the temple garment being covered to be modest enough.

  3. With things like Project Gutenberg and other e-book sites that offer them for free, it's extremely difficult for censors to prevent people from reading unless they were to install tough internet filters like China and North Korea do. One thing I do know for sure, is that I'm not ashamed of my love for reading, and the only way someone is going to remove a real book from me is to pry it from my cold, dead hands. I refuse to get a Kindle or other electronic reader as I blame them in part for putting bookstores such as Borders out of business.

  4. As far as tannins go, those are also on fruit skins, so if you eat fruit with the skin such as grapes, you're eating tannins. My guess is that it's only about testing one's faith through obedience, since if you truly believe tea and coffee are forbidden, you will avoid those at all cost.

  5. She's only 24, which might seem old to you, but she's quite young and there's a possibility she could change her mind as she gets older. If depression runs in her family, it's also likely that she's worried about developing PPD after a pregnancy, since when women have a genetic tendency for depression, their risk of that disorder is higher. Maybe counseling is something you should look into, and if she refuses to go, you should go by yourself.

Another thing is that most women her age are just starting to get married, or aren't at that point in their lives just yet. My SIL was 27 when she and my brother had my niece, and this was after waiting for a few years after they married before starting a family.

  6. It hasn't worked for me, as every polling place I've been to has had an American flag in the room. I have a Democratic governor, 2 US senators who are Democrats, and Democratic legislators representing me. With the new gerrymandering that was done, we'll probably lose the Republican congress representative, as my area was part of a district that had very conservative Orange County. My area has also had a majority vote for the Democratic nominee for President, not just Obama.

  7. In my opinion, that's hoarding when people have such large stockpiles that their children have toilet paper under their beds, or a shower is used as storage instead of what it really was designed for. Also, it's selfish to clear the shelves of something so nobody else could get in on a deal.

I understand being prepared for disaster either natural or man-made, including unemployment, but one doesn't need to have a major stockpile like these hoarders, I mean "extreme couponers" have. If one's house is destroyed by fire or other disaster, or things get wet because of flooding, that hoard is gone for good.

On occasions where I use coupons while shopping, I use them only on things I actually use, and follow the rules when it comes to limits and leave plenty of items on the shelf for others. Basically, if I see something that says 2 for the price of 1, I only get 2 of that particular item. I like getting a great bargain just as much as anyone else, but it's possible to save money while following rules and allowing others to be able to take advantage of the same deal.

  8. I also think that the not guilty verdict on the most serious charges just means that the jury didn't think the prosecution didn't prove their case beyond the reasonable doubt. It just shows that if there's only circumstantial evidence, and there's a long enough delay in finding the body, it's extremely difficult to get a conviction. It's just the way the American justice system is designed to work, that it's better to have someone like Casey or OJ walk free than to have someone who is truly innocent be convicted. I'm not happy with the verdict, but since I support the country I was born and raised in, I have to accept the jury's decision.

Either way, she's still going to be known as a criminal, as she was convicted of lying to law enforcement, so it's going to be nearly impossible for her to get a job since most places require criminal background checks. There aren't that many employers who are willing to hire someone who was convicted of lying to law enforcement, since if they lie to them, who's to say they're not going to lie to the employer.

  9. Unfortunately with the untrained clergy the LDS church has, sometimes there are issues like this that come up. I would think that the LDS work ethic includes having a woman who is prepared to work if they live in an area where 2 incomes are really needed to provide the basics of food and shelter. In those areas, only the wealthy can afford to have someone stay at home. I know the LDS church doesn't like it, but there are cases where the woman earns more than her husband, so for those families, the dad stays at home while the mom works.

There are also jobs where people feel more comfortable with a woman, such as an OB/GYN, daycare provider, or teacher. I think if women suddenly disappeared from the workforce, the economy would suffer, as there wouldn't be enough male teachers, nurses, etc to be ready to fill the gap. There might also be an increase in homeschooling which would hurt even private schools as there are people who are afraid of men around their children.

  10. You're right, Jamie.

It does make me wonder: How many of these false accusations don't result in people changing their story and, because this particular crime is often 'Guilty before proven innocent', how many people are rotting in prison for a crime they didn't commit?

My little sister went to a school where her teacher was accused of molesting one of the kids. He was disbarred from teaching, lost his job and became a pariah in the community. Eventually, a kid came forward explaining that this girl was making the accusation to get back at him for giving her poor marks. This was in Sarnia, Ontario. How many people didn't read the newspaper article that shed light on his innocence?

Regardless, he never taught in Sarnia again. I'm uncertain he ever taught again - I don't know if I could, after that.

And this happened again in the news:

South Lakes' Lanigan Still Reeling From False Accusation - Reston, VA Patch

These particular accusations, and the problem with them, is that everybody assumes that 'Nobody would ever make up these sorts of accusations'. The moment someone gets accused of it, most people immediately feel hatred for these people rise in them because 'Nobody would make up accusations like those'.

It's unfair and even angering. It is something that you cannot defend yourself against. It is something that can come from out of nowhere. And only the most obvious of these crimes comes to light because only those who cannot keep a story straight, or who tell others their secret, result in this coming to light. All others are sacrificed on the altar of our own failure to understand that this is a serious problem.

My brother decided to work for the county instead of using his teaching credential because of this issue, as it would take one false accusation of child abuse to ruin his reputation and career. In a way, it's a blessing as he makes more money with the county than he would have as a teacher, and he still has job security while my SIL and other teachers were laid off.

  11. I'm also a fan of Land's End, and got one on sale. Now, when I go swimming at the gym, I prefer one of those athletic type of swimsuits because they stay where they should. One doesn't have to be LDS to think it's best that one's swimsuit doesn't move and show something you don't want others to see.

  12. My Catholic grandma made a variation of those potatoes every Christmas and Easter when we went to her house for those holiday dinners. What was different about her recipe is that she added an envelope of onion soup mix to the cream of mushroom soup, and the potatoes were sliced. She also didn't use sour cream, and it had cheddar cheese on top instead of corn flakes or potato chips. It was known as scalloped potatoes, and the recipe came from a magazine in the 50's.

I noticed in the Better Homes and Gardens 75th Anniversary cookbook, there's something called Potluck Potatoes, and it's closer to the Mormon funeral potatoes recipe.

  13. I have dogs that would bark, so I'd have time to dial 911, but if necessary, I can use a baseball bat if it was obvious they wanted to do more than steal items. I remember a study about this issue and the conclusion was that a man would shoot a warning shot at someone as they're starting to break in, while a woman would wait by the bedrooms, especially if she has children, then shoot to kill.
