  1. I read on the internet that he is no longer a Mormon - he's left the church.....
  2. Charisma is important if you want others to take notice of you, listen to you, etc. For instance, when I am listing to someone speak, whether to myself or infront of a large group of people, I take more notice and listen better if the person is interesting, and speaks up and with confidence, looks at you directly, stands with confidence. etc. Not everyone obviously has good public speaking skills, I understand. But it is very hard to pay attention to someone whom does not look at their audience and speak softly in a monotone voice. Charisma is important to connect well with others. A good leader has charisma, it comes along with leadership qualities.
  3. I think there are good people and bad people whereever you go in the world. I must admit though, although I realize that most people from the middle east are probably good people whom belive in peace, etc., I do fear them also, probably due to things I hear about on CNN or read about (fear that many want to kill all the westerners's, wipe out America). It scares me and sometimes when I see people from the middle east or walk by them on the street, I wonder to myself it they hate me.....
  4. I must say, our TV gets a whole lot of use in our home. My LO loves to watch TV and I think its actually educational for him - he watches kids shows, primarily YO Gabba Gabba on the Treehouse channel. My husband and I - we love to watch documentaries, A&E, history channel etc. I find that TV can be very educational and if not for shows like these, I would not have half the knowledge I do now. I also like tv strictly for entertainment purposes too - its does not have to have a purpose or educational value, simply for enjoyment. I am a fan of American Idol, Survivor, Law and Orders and yes, The View. I also watch CNN and other news shows - if I didn't, I would not really know much about what is going on in this world. I also LOVE watching movies.
  5. How do you all feel about going to establishments that serve alcohol? Do you see this as fine so long as you are not drinking alcohol? I live in a city where there are very few LDS members, and all my friends and family are not part of the Church. I think that if you live in a place like SLC, its easy. Most are LDS, events are LDS friendly etc so your social life is not limited. There is also a fine line between a restaurant and a bar. For those whom say they will not go into a bar, many and most restaurants in most cities have bar areas and the "drinkers" may come out in force later in the evenings. When I go to picnics, fairs, festivals, bbq's, birthday parties, etc., there is alcohol around. I have no problem drinking my diet pop, but is it considered "unmormonly" to even be at these place? Just wondering where you all stand on this issue?
  6. I need an underststanding of the order in which things are to be done to become a member. First, obviously educate yourself and accept Christ/The Book of Mormon, etc..... (do you have to have a "testimony at this time or when?". Second - the missionaries come to give their talks Baptism??? WOW - is that mandatory only after Baptism or only if you want a temple recommend? Tithing - again is this after Baptism or only after being sealed in the temple... I know garments only come after the temple...but when do you go to the temple after the Baptism???? Is there some sort of list????
  7. I would quit my job for sure. I work in a job that is very boring and completely unmeaningful LOL - but its needed to pay the bills. I'd love to not work - I'd spend more time with my family and friends and probably get involved with some sort of charity work. As for the amount, these days you need a lot of money, probably 500k IF you invest wisely?
  8. I have some questions in regards to the WOW. It seems from what I have been reading, many LDS members vary in regards to their interpretations about certain things. The big one seems to be drinks. Alcohol - Ok, this one is pretty easy and I understand it. What I ask is it ok to cook with wine or beer (I use wine for several of my favourite dishes - I believe most of the alcohol dissolves (usually 1 cup is required). What about non-alcholic beer???? Coffee - I understand regular coffee..what I wonder is why not decaffinated coffee? Is is not the caffeine that is the problem? Or other ingredients? How about coffee subsitutes like the Barley Grain drinks? (it tastes pretty much like coffee and even looks like it...) Caffeine in general - are you allowed to consume? All soda (not just coke) has caffeine unless stated otherwise (see this link :How Much Caffeine in Drinks -- Coffee, Tea, Soft Drinks -- Caffeine Content) How about hot chocolate or chocolate of any sort... The other question is Tithing - some pay 10% of Net, others pay 10% of gross. Note there can be a HUGE difference in this payments. Where do you all stand on this??? Garments - do you have to sleep with them on?????
  9. I was not suprised at all myself. I was a Danny fan and hoped he would win (was shocked that Kris made it to top 2 with Adam). Adam is definately more of a "performer" and a better singer yes, but I think and have thought all along, that Kris definately appeals to a wider range of people. For the most part (not all of course), Adam would appeal to a younger audience, and more of a "liberal" audience whom is more into the heavier rock type music. Kris on the other hand, could appeal to pretty much anyone, young and old, and those into country music, also those whom are more conservative musically and in general. For me, Adam turned me off a bit, I know he is good, but not really my style is all. I found him a bit over the top and have to say...cheezy......Adam will go on to good things, probably fronting a heavier rock band and he'll do very well.
  10. Hi All, New to the board, I should have introduced myself on the other board but I have questions to ask so I figure just do it in one post here. My story (Coles notes version). My husband was a strong member of the church years before I met him. He has been "inactive" since (I think "disfellowshiped") and is now wanting to return to the church, live the WOW, etc. etc. He believes without any doubt that the Book of Mormon, the bible, etc. is true. He believes that if we do not join, we will not be together forever (in the afterlife), nor our family with us (we have a son). I am not a mormon, nor was I raised with religion. I want to support my husband as much as possible, I feel that he truly needs the church in his life, and I want to make sure that he stays on track with it and be the best influence I can on him. Here is my problem. It is right for a spouse to join the LDS simply because you are a spouse and want to support? I mean, I have to be honest and say that there are some things about the LDS church, the Book of mormon, and even the WOW that I have some problems with. Can someone be a member if they have doubts about the Book of Mormon? and, or, The Bible? Should I just join and keep my reservations to myself????? Can I be a member when I don't necessarily believe everything but do some things? I am slowly reading the Book of Mormon, have read "Mormon for Dummies" and watched videos and read alot (maybe too much) on the internet. There are lots of sites.....We have started to go to church also. There are many things I admire about the LDS community. The strong emphasis on family, their values and morals, even the WOW (although I find a bit extreme I'd do it to support my husband). Where does everyone stand on this? JPL
