What to do when you question a book of scripture?
JohnOF123 replied to GreatFamily's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Jesus is indeed speaking about end times. The "see my glory" promise prophecies to their glimpse into the Kindgom of God. And the works verse is this: those who are saved by faith, their works will be tried by fire, and anything out of wrong motivation, or not for God, will be burnt up. There is no condemnation for those who are saved. Two separate judgements. I can exlaberate on any of this if you wish, I just want to let you know that Jesus is indeed talking about the end, but is not implying that His second coming is within 50 years, that's ludacrous. That is something Athesista say, not Christians, lol. Why would Jesus have given us a whole list of things that was going to happen before His second coming, and then say this? World population is soon to peak. He said if He did not return when He does, that no flesh would survive. The harvest is not yet over, perhaps this means if He did not return in the end times, that maybe an A-bomb would kill everybody, who knows. But there are many more things to happen. The Jews just returned to their land in 1948. There are also Christians who argue that the Second coming has already occurred, and this is one of the verses they use. Christ proved His deity, we know Christ was God, as Christians, let's not distort the Bible's complete context. (Not you Kukui, I'm just speaking generally.) -

First, Jonah didn't make a mistake, for he told the Ninevites precisely what God had told him to say (Jonah 3:1). Since God cannot err (Hebrews 6:18; Titus 1:2), this is not a false statement. Secondly, there was an implied condition in Jonah's exhortation to Nineveh -- "Unless you repent, God will destroy you." So the fulfillment of the threat of judgment was contingent on the repentance of Nineveh -- a fact proven by their repentance (see Jonah 3:5) as well as by Jonah's selfish admission that he was afraid from the beginning that they would repent and God would save them (4:2). And Third, God's allowance of repentance in the face of judgment is stated as a principle in Jeremiah 18:7-8: "If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned." This principle is illustrated in the case of Nineveh. Biblical prophets were 100-percent accurate (Deuteronomy 18:22). -

I think we all agree that Jesus was God. He performed miracles, died for us and saved the World. I cannot believe we are proposing that Jesus Himself gave false prophecies. Think about what you're saying guys. -

"The Greek word translated “kingdom” can also be translated “royal splendor,” meaning that the three disciples standing there would see Christ as He really is—the King of heaven—which occurred in the transfiguration. The “transfiguration” refers to the event described in the above cited passages when Jesus took Peter, James, and John to the top of the mountain, where He met with Moses and Elijah—representing the Law and the Prophets of the Old Testament—and spoke with them. The disciples saw Jesus in all His glory and splendor, talking with a glorified Moses and Elijah. This is a glimpse of what will occur in Jesus' kingdom. The disciples were dumbstruck at the sight and “fell on their faces” (Matthew 17:6). It seems most natural to interpret this promise in Matthew 16:28; Mark 9:1; and Luke 9:27 as a reference to the transfiguration, which "some" of the disciples would witness only six days later, exactly as Jesus predicted. In each Gospel, the very next passage after this promise from Jesus is the transfiguration, which shows Jesus in all His glory which will be seen again in the Kingdom of God. The contextual links make it very likely that this is the proper interpretation."-Gotquestions.org -

No, not at all. It was good. I appreciate hearing your ideas. So if you like ideas, think about this one. Here is my theory on why I believe time is finite (not infinite). Let's say I told you that I would give you a candy bar, but you first had to wait an infinite amount of time before I did. Would you ever get that candy bar? The answer is no. You would always be waiting for that infinite amount of time to go by before I gave it to you. Time can extend into the future infinitely, but not into the past. NOW apply that logic to the past. "How could you ever reach this day (present) if there is an infinite amount of time before it?" You would always have to wait more time to reach today. It doesn't matter how close you think you're getting to today, you still have to wait an infinite amount of time. You would never reach today. Therefore, time is finite and had a beginning. This is why scientists today believe that "time" started 15 bil years ago with the big bang. I don't believe that, but the point is they demand that time must have a beginning. I think the Biblical account of 6000+ years ago is more scientific, and I'll give you one example. Take one of the laws of thermodynamics. All bodies of matter will reach equal temperature (equilibrium) given enough time. Now lets say you have 2 cups of tea in the same room. 1 cup is hot and the other cup is cold. Eventually, those liquids are going to reach the same temperature. Lets look at space. Comets are ice, they are the cold cups of tea going around the sun. We know they are constantly melting because of their tail. Stars are your hot cups of tea, they will burn our, given enough time. It doesn't matter how long you think this will take, with an infinite amount of time in the past you can multiply a billion by a trillion by a zillion, etc. Time must have had a beginning. You might have to review this again, some (like my wife) cannot wrap their minds around infinite numbers and concepts. -
How many Charismatics does it take to change a light bulb? One to change the bulb and nine to pray against the spirit of darkness. How many Calvinists does it take to change a light bulb? None. God has predestined when the light will be on. How many Baptists does it take to change a light bulb? Change??? How many Atheists does it take to change a lightbulb? One. But they are still in darkness. How many Mormons does it take to screw in a light bulb? Six, one to screw it in and the other five to serve refreshments. How many TV evangelists does it take to change a light bulb? One. But for the message of light to continue, send in your donation today. How many Catholics does it take to change a light bulb? None. They always use candles. How many Amish does it take to change a light bulb? "What's a light bulb?"

Yes, I must... Jesus didn't say that. He said some they would see the Kingdom of God before they died. And they did... on the mountain, remember... they were brought up there and saw moses and others And I think you have your Jonah story confused. And there are no false prophets or prophecies in the bible. -
Why did Jesus talk about Hell more than anyone else?
JohnOF123 replied to JohnOF123's topic in General Discussion
Ok I can understand you thinking that, but what would be the most "Just" thing a judge on Earth could do. Let's say you committed a crime on the streets. No, lets say you committed tens of thousands of them. Is the judge bound to let you free, or if he really is "just" should he condemn you? I would say that a just judge HAS to condemn us, or he is not just. That is the biggest problem in the gospel. If God is Just, then how can he overlook our sins? He did not have to provide a way, and as far as fairness goes, He could give all of us what we "really" deserve and still be both fair and just. That's what I meant by that last sentence. -

I have a funny speculation about how God is gonna be ticked off that we are demoting Him to some little god of many, who wants to hear it, lol. Ok, I'm just giving you a hard time Fireshark. Let's hear your speculation. -

Yea, Jonah told them if they didn't repent, God was going to destroy them. They repented, and God did not destroy them. Is that what you mean? -

Lol, gee thx. :) And curious. How can this be with eternal progression. For instance, God the Father was as spirit baby by another God. Well that God must have been a man too. If that other God was a man too, then the spirit baby God the Father was not born yet, while he was a man? right? -
10 Things Christians Can Learn from the Mormons
JohnOF123 replied to JohnOF123's topic in General Discussion
Apostles are the original Christians. Then Jews, then Gentiles. Catholics and Gnostics (not lumping them together) are the first people who brought in large organized churches and man made rules into the mix. Well the gnostics didn't really organize a large church, but they brought in non-Christian rules and stuff. -

JohnOF123 replied to JohnOF123's topic in General Discussion
I can sum it up with these words. And I'm only saying it like all this to try to capture the true reality of sin. "If God were fair, everyone that has ever lived should die right now.. and go to hell for all of eternity." You have done sins, so dark, so awful, that you wouldn't even want to tell your very best friend. If I could play a DVD to a crowd of everything you have ever done, every vile thought you have ever had, you would run away and never come back to show your face again. I know this because I too am a man, and the Bible tells us this. We've sinned against a Holy and perfect God. An infinite God worthy of infinite glory. Even one lie to this God is deserving of an infinite hell. The men in the OT were saved the same way: By faith in a righteousness not of their own, outside of themselves. And eternal destruction was indeed taught in the OT. And for the many people without the Torah, the law was written on their hearts. God has a way for them. Jesus is the one who said it: I am the way, the truth and the life, NOBODY comes to the Father, except though him. Isn't this why we preach the gospel to the world? The only thing God ever did that was unfair, was to provide a way for sinners to be saved and enter into His Kingdom. -

I cannot debate all of these on one thread. Though these are biased and easily counter-argued. I could also list 3 websites that explained these particular ones. So if these can be explained, and hundreds more prophecies can be proclaimed and not refuted by atheists, then we should be in aw-struck wonder. Look at all of the amazing prophecies we have: Tyre, Christ, Babylon, etc etc.. No man can tell the future with such striking detail and accuracy. Only one can tell the beginning from the end, and that is God. -
Well I enjoy a good debate as well. But I don't think I belong in this one. Good luck in your search for truth fatguy!

hey, fatguys back! and he brought a friend, a pretty ugly one at that.

So are all your questions answered on this, or still fuzzy? I sure wish everyone would go in the chat sometimes. Hey pam, any chance on sending out a mass message to everyone to invite them to the chat, heh. -
Thanks, is this just a search engine though? (ohh and happy bday)

I was wondering what the current claims of LDS archeology are. When searching for this, I don't get too much information. I'm not sure how much digging or research is still done today, but do the LDS archeologists have a claim of a certain ancient peoples? For instance, the Aztec or Mayan culture. I only mention these because I've heard someone claim that before (a while ago). Any new or updated information would be much appreciated. Or if you know of a good website that regularly updates and publishes its discoveries, that would be cool too.

Yes we believe God created our universe, made up of a matrix of time, space, matter (and He reigns outside and not bound to it). He could answer a billions prayers and take all the "time" He needs because He is outside of it. Time is relative to space (matter and energy), so it's not just a perception. Do you want to hear the logic on how time can go forward infinitely but not backwards? or do you know it. -
