I have heard our leaders decry the so-called ERA, I've heard them decry Same Sex Marriages, I've heard them decry pornography, and was grateful in all three cases for their wisdom, insight and calling. Can Moshka say the same? Would you disagree with them on these issues?

It's a profound book, and an excellent read. Claire Middlemiss kept copious records and thanks to Wright and Prince we gain a keen insight into President McKay... When you've finished it (it took me less than 48 hours to devour it) I would enjoy discussing several chapters and in gaining your insight to them.

MOE...Let me offer up a few comments that may or may not clarify my views and position on this issue. First off, let me say that I find the excessive nit picking my many on this site to be somewhat oppressive. Correct, I was referring to the poster who claimed the President Benson had made some charge "at a GOP fundraiser" that one "Couldn't be a Democrat and a good Latter Day Saint" As I re-read my post, I can see the confusion, my apologies. Having said that, I have yet to find the original quote anywhere? I recall when Ernie Wilkinson won the GOP nomination for the US Senate from Utah, the Church was very silent on his candidacy.

Prison Chaplin: Thank you for the link to the Robert Welch speech, since one good link deserves a few more, I offer up the following. Link #1: A speech delivered at an annual gathering of the JBS. Please note, this speech was delivered in 1974, listen to it carefully and then ask yourself..."Could he possibly be talking about the current occupant of the White House and his policies"? YouTube - Mind Blowing Speech By JBS Founder Robert Welch In 1974! Link #2: A Conference talk delivered by Elder Benson in 1972. I clearly remember many "liberal" members in my ward condemning President Benson for this talk. Prison Chaplin, this talk deals with LDS dogma, just a heads up. Link #3: A devotional talk delivered by Elder Benson at BYU, in 1966. Listen carefully, with the fall of the Wall, KGB files opened have in fact validated President Benson's views on Communists in our Government. Today, we argue the legacy of President Benson, a man who's views no matter how controversial have been in many cases validated. Some here venerate the late Hugh B. Brown, a man who's doctrinal foundation I can't argue with. Somewhere I'd like to think that President Benson and President Brown are working together in a new mission field, both I believe having their calling made sure and elect.

What I'm finding very telling in this thread, is that the person who leveled the original "charges"...now having been called on it, has gone radio silent.

It saddens me when I see so-called good members of my faith slag and attack President Benson, more so it seems some of the more vitriolic attacks come from those who were still in the Pre-Existence when President Benson served. I have suffered with this old canard about being LDS and Democrat, and like the current occupant of the White House's birth certificate, one can NEVER offer up the original source of this canard. Truth de told, up until the advent of Barry Goldwater's run for the Presidency, Utah was a solidly Democratic State. I've read in bio's of President McKay's Father returning from a Priesthood Session ashamed because he was sitting on what became the GOP side of the chapel. President McKay often told the story of his Father remarking to his Mother..."How will I ever show my face in town again as a Republican". I too remember vividly and yes fondly of growing up in a John Birch home, my Grandfather a founding member of the JBS (Robert Welch was always "Uncle Candy" to us kids) I recall my Grandfather quipping to a friend he served on the Stake HC with, (who eventually became a GA himself) that the "Lord must be with us...he called Elder Brown home before ETB". Whilst it was a bit of "insider Baseball" I can tell you that my Grandfather had nothing but respect and admiration for President Brown, as did President Benson. President Benson served our Lord and Savior with great endurance. When called by President Eisenhower to serve as Secretary of Agriculture, many of the pundits of the day scoffed and mocked him. Drew Pearson said that he'd be the first fired, yet he served 8 years. If my memory serves me correctly, President Benson is/was the only Eisenhower Cabinet Officer to serve the entire two terms.

Daniel...The First Presidency also counseled the membership to oppose the so-called Equal Rights Amendment, and to Support the passage of Proposition 22 and 8 in California. I believe that the First Presidency will ask California Saints to oppose the legalization of Marijuana this November. Daniel, I really enjoy you cultural Mormon's...

Except...Only one of these "multifaceted men" was a Prophet, Seer and Revelator called of God to restore the true Gospel in these latter days...

President Benson is only controversial to those so-called Latter Day Saints who think themselves smarter than our General Authorities.

Welcome to the forums... As you progress in your search and study of the Gospel, don't forget to check out FARMS and FAIR as well as other venues provided by BYU and the Church. I have found over the years the writings of Bruce R. McConkie and Boyd K. Packer to be very spiritually fufilling and imbued with the spirit of our Lord and Savior. Lastly, while sites such as this can offer a good insight into the thinking of individual members, please keep an eye out for those who would rather "Gospel Hobby", than hold fast to the Iron Rod... Oh...and next time you're in these parts, don't forget the Tim Tams...<VBG>
