  1. Amazing stuff there. You guys should look into scanning it and then uploading it onto the internet, so that all your relatives can see. Also to protect it from physical damage
  2. Random question: what do you think of praying for revelation? Like praying for a revelation to president monson for a solution for the gay members of the church. Would that be improper?
  3. Kind of getting off topic here, but why do you think there seems to be so much anti-intellectualness among this church and others? I mean, I personally find that studying things just increases my faith. Like I learned the other day that the reason the gospel of John plays up the hostility of the jews towards jesus is that it was the last gospel written and thus had to address the climate of the roman backlash of the jewish revolt. And if we thought the bible said something for fact, and leading scientists say that that is factually inaccurate, I dont write off the scientists or the bible. I accept that the science is right and that the message of the bible still remains the same and that God must have wanted the people of that time to think of the world being created in a certain way, but now there shouldnt be any debate about the evolution of man or the creation of the world. For example, as a young boy, I thought for years that the word facade was pronounced fake-aid. One day, I realized I've been pronouncing it wrong. It didnt change the meaning of the word, the word was still the same, but I knew better.
  4. The main thing is I dont want to be a hypocrite and subscribe to a religion which denounces what I see as undeniable fact. So there are some issues I have such as 1) I believe the LDS church maintains that the KLV is the most accurate translation and that the apostles actually wrote the gospels themselves. While most scholars would say that the KJV has several errors and deviations from the ancient greek texts. And that the Gospels were only ascribed to different apostles after they were written. 2) I know as a fact that evolution is how God did the creation. So I believe that Genesis and Noah are just teachable stories, possibly true ones which have been grossly exaggerated over time. 3) There are some parts of the bible and BoM which would have to be exagerrated if I am to believe in them. Such as Solomons 1000 wives or the scale and scope of the civilizations in the book of mormon. 4) This is probably the most controversial one. I think that gays should have the same right to marry as straight people, as long as they also follow the same rules of chastity. Back in Pauls day the only homosexual acts going on were between prostitutes and pagan cults. So back then it would have made sense to condemn it. Jesus also said that a man should marry if he cant control his desires. So why have gays breaking the law of chastity simply because they can't marry? I say its better that they be righteous married and gay, than gay and sinful and full of doubts of a God which forbids them of loving someone. I think Jesus would be in favor of this.
  5. As I've said before, I like the mormon church. But there are just a few extraordinary claims I don't think are fact, and are getting in the way of my conversion. I won't list them here because I dont want the discussion to be sidetracked. But feel free to ask if you want. So how far does the church go into dictating what is true? Would holding a belief contra to the official version of the church put you in a compromising position with say holding a priesthood or temple recommend? How small in importance does that belief have to be for it to not be an issue? and who decides?
  6. And here I thought this was going to be a thread about fictional books concerning the events within the book of mormon.
  7. I'm what I like to call a mormonphile. Its just such an interesting culture. You have cool buildings, great music, interesting history, and righteous virtues. I'd convert right now if it wasn't for the religion.
  8. Whatever. In the minds of many atheists church is a corrupt and prejudiced institution of superstitions. They seem to want whats best for us. I'm sure they don't like our Jesus Saves bumper stickers or similar advertisements either. But lets try to follow the example of Jesus and turn our cheeks when insulted. Its what He would want.
  9. This video gives me the creeps. The woman looks and moves like a robot. Its those lifeless eyes. Gives me the willys. The patdowns are an interesting conundrum, on one hand you want to be secure in your persons, but does that mean not being blown up or not being pat down. I say we just make planes out of Qurans.
  10. That. Was. CRAZY! I can't believe they both quit. Too bad. I didn't like Naonka anyway, but this was bittersweet because I wanted justice. If you quit you shouldnt be allowed on the jury. What were they thinking!
  11. Has anyone ever heard of this book. Here is the website for it Church for Men Apparently there is a large gender gap in all major faiths. How do the figures look in your ward? So what do you all think about this gender gap. How can we bring in men and retain men to active church life?
  12. Universal Healthcare could work, but it would need cost controls to go with it. Japan has a huge book stating exactly how much they can charge per procedure, and it is cheap. Otherwise the doctors will just charge the insurance companies more and more. I like what John Stossel said about health care best however.
  13. I've also heard theories that the adam and eve story is a recollection of the time hunter-gatherers and farmer-herders were first starting to come into conflict. The garden of eden is the time were you could just walk into the forest and eat its bounty, and then the fall is them having to toil in the fields to make grain. Reflecting the transition from one type of society to another. And then the conflict between cain and abel also reflects the conflicts between hunter-gatherers and the workers of land. I just thought that was an interesting take on it.
  14. Its quite sad what happened to the american indians. Slavery and the eradication of the indians are the darkest blots on our nations history.
  15. Mostly the old testament stories. There are alot of exaggerations in there. King Solomon obviously never had 1000 wives because the population of jerusalem at the time was only about 1000. And then Noah, Jonah and of course Adam and Eve. Those things would all be impossible to happen as they are written. There are of course all those contradictions too.
  16. I used to make up scripts back in school like this. I still use some of the most frequently used words I made up when taking notes quickly. For example of is a loop like an upside down support our troops ribbon. And the is sort of like the euro sign. The cherokee made their own alphabet. It seems to be a common thing to do when trying to create a distinct culture. I wonder if there are groups who write in deseret as a hobby
  17. Thanks guys, I really appreciate this. Its hard to choose between what science says didnt happen and what faith said does. I dont think you need to prove anything, only not discredit yourselves by promoting false science. Faith can be the proof
  18. My face is always in a smile after watching this. Check it out
  19. I know your not the only ones, but I like you guys most. It just makes the most sense. is there any good resources on mormons views on these events, whether theyre factual, metaphorical, or otherwise??
  20. Why do mormons insist on interpreting some stories of the bible as the literal events. All the scientific evidence in the world says that man has evolved into our current form and that a global flood never took place. So long as a person is following the commandments and worshiping Christ why does it matter if a person takes these stories literally or not?
  21. I hope fabio wins. He's just so nice and relaxed.
  22. awesome book. My favorite book I've ever read. Theres just so many layers, I get something new out of it everytime. In this world all the animals are machines, snakes drain venom from stomachs, man's best friend is a killer. Man, I could go on and on
