  1. I was wondering if anyone could show me a source online of where I can search conference reports that are before 1970. I found some quotes online and want to check them against the actual sources but I don't have the exact years just the speakers. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.
  2. My wife was talking with her friend who wanted to go and do baptisms for the dead, but my wife told her that she couldn't because she was endowed and didn't have her own names. Her friend said that it didn't matter, but my wife recalls that the issue was brought up in First Presidency letter or during General Conference. Does anyone have a source about this policy? On an unrelated note, is there an archive that one can go back and read statements by the First Presidency that are brought before the general Church membership? I would love a resource like that for my own study and to clarify points of Church policy.
  3. I am trying to find a couple quotes an I was wondering if there was someone here that could help me. Here they are: 1. There is a quote, that is attributed to an early Church leader, possibly Brigham Young, that goes something like this: The day that the Church is accepted by the world, that we know that we aren't doing what we should as Saints. 2. A quote by Joseph Smith that talks about the ultimate purpose of the Church on the Earth is to establish Zion. This has been true of every other dispensation as well. If someone could give me the exact quotes for these and give me a reference I would greatly appreciate it.
  4. Part of the reason why I was wondering about this and posed it for discussion is if animals truly are capable of speech, but presently have their tongues confused so we don't understand them, how would that affect things? What would happen if God allowed animals to speak again? How would that change our view of our relationship with nature, animals specifically? Through scripture and the words of prophets God has indicated a profound amount of care and consideration for animals far more than most of us as individuals on a daily basis do. So thinking along those lines made me wonder about some of the quotes and stories about talking animals.
  5. The second aspect concerning the flies isn't linked to the animals talking. I just thought of the story and didn't want to start a new thread so I thought that I would include it because I wanted to know the source of the anecdote. I am much more interested in the animals talking part.
  6. I am familiar with the rattlesnakes story. I have heard the flies story several times over the years but I haven't yet found a source for it.
  7. All right I thought I had read quotes about this years ago but I wanted to know if anyone could give me info quotes about the LDS stance on animals talking. We all know about Balaam's donkey. I am sure we are taught that animals can speak in the life after because of the four beasts in Revelation because they are praising, praying, and speaking to the Lord and to John. I believe Joseph Smith indicated that the four beasts were four actual noble beasts and shows that animals have intelligence and are capable of obtaining glory. There is also the situation concerning the serpent, but that's a bit controversial since we don't know if it was a literal serpent or just a symbol of Satan, even though I thought I read somewhere that Satan drew a number of serpents over to his side, can't remember where I read that. In Cleon Skousen's book the first 2000 years I thought he stated that the tongues of animals were confused at Babel just like the tongues of man, but he's known to have some pretty wild ideas. I was hoping to find some concrete teaching from Joseph Smith or other Church Leaders. Oh and this is not directly connected with the first part but I was wondering if someone could point me to an anecdote with Joseph Smith, with him meeting with some brethren and they were swatting flies or something like that, and he's says to them, "If you knew what I know you wouldn't do that." I wanted to know if that was accurate and if so were it could be found.
  8. I just recently finished reading the book and I think it is truly amazing. It has totally changed my view on economics, money and the way society should function. The subject matter was well researched by Nibley, and draws on so many scriptural passages and teachings of prophets it is impossible to ignore the message he is trying to get across. I would love to see some one even try to form a rebuttal against what is written in the book, because it seems that scripturally, doctrinally, and what the prophets have spoken agree very much in what is presented in the book. I too would like to hear what others have thought of the book and if it has affected the way they live or view the world.
  9. Hi my name is Kevin and i am new here to lds.net. I have lurked around for a bit but finally decided to create a profile. Let's see what to say about myself... My family joined the Church in California when I was 7 years old. So I have been a member most of my life. We moved to Utah when I was 11 and have lived here since then. I am the oldest of 5 kids in my family. I was homeschooled a good part of my life. I am by nature very philosophical and always trying to learn new things. I have researched and looked into all the major religions and philosophies in the world. I try to be very open and accepting of people from all walks of life. I served a mission in the Canada Halifax Mission, which is Eastern Canada, which covers the provinces of New Brunkswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, and Aroostook County in Maine. I am really big into health and the Word of Wisdom. I am a vegetarian and have been for 4 years now, and have been a strict vegetarian (no dairy or eggs) since Nov '10. I also have been doing a lot of studying into consecration and the United Order. I have a girlfriend and I hope to get married sometime later this year. I think that covers the basics, if anyone has any questions or wishes for me to eloborate of anything just let me know.
