  1. Now you have me really confused. I do everything with the mouse. I've always wondered what that strange thing with all those strange symbols on it was used for. Besides that I never learned to type. Larry P
  2. This well worn excuse for failure to change has been debunked numerous times. A few years back many Grandmas started to return to college to either finish what they started years before or to fulfill their lifelong desire to get a college education. At Byu there were numerous examples of Grandma and Granddaughter attending at the same time and taking courses of similar difficulty. As I recall, in all cases the Grandma did better than the grandchild. This was explained by the fact that learning is an incremental process. We learn new things by associating them with similar things we already know. Older people excell because they have a much larger body of experience to call on. Habits, however, are another thing though. Just as it is hard to get the buggy out of the ruts in a muddy road, it is hard to break out of what may be a lifetime habit. But if we make the effort and succeed, the ride is so much smoother. Larry P
  3. Selek Now you have me all confused. What is a '. I thought you used that to indicate missing letters in your quotes. Larry P
  4. Ahh, but it is so easy. You just have to have a minimum of three Phds in the field of computor hacking. Sorry but I just dont have the time or the inclination to go back to school to obtain this awesome ability. By the way it is great to wake up in the morning and when I set down at my computer, to see all your smiling faces. And having met many of you at the conference, I do see your smiling faces. After visiting this board, I then have the strength to check that other board and wade through the utter nonsense to seek out the the occasional gem Larry P
  5. Me too!!! Larry P
  6. Welcome to the board Dan. Spend as little or as much time as you can but never go away and deny us the pleasure of your wit, knowledge and keen edge of sarcasm. Larry P
  7. Good for you!!!!! Larry P
  8. At this point in time,he does not get into trouble while wandering but that was not always the case so take heart and let him grow in his own way but teach him that there are bounds that he must stay within. More important find some thing that you can make him feel he is respponsible for at Church. My grandson takes responsibility for helping the disabled get from their cars into the Chapel and back to their cars afterwards. When he was younger he was given the responsibility of putting the programs in the holders provided for them outside the Chapel doors. High level autistic children are capable of learning to be responsible if we just give them the chance. Teach him about the Priesthood and and talk to your Bishop about getting him ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood. My grandson is now a Priest but only feels comfortable passing the Sacrament. He has been considered for the Melchesidek Priesthood but says he is not ready for the responsibility just yet. Unfortunately, one of my wifes sisters had a high level autistic son and instead of giving him responsibilities they let him grow up doing absolutely nothing and considered him useles for anything. In his older years he just set around in a chair staring at the walls untill he finally passed away. Larry P
  9. The answer should be obvious but people seldom think about it. They look to others for an answer or read or hear about someone's model and think, Oh that sounds reasonable. I will go along with it. They then go back to reading the Book of Mormon without once checking to see if the model agrees with what the Book of Mormon says. The Book of Mormon is the only revealed source for information about the geography of the cultures described within its pages. No other information has been revealed to any modern prophet even though many of them have expressed opinions over the years prior to being called as the Prophet of the Church. It has always intrigued me that they have all been silent in this area after becoming the Prophet and spokesman for the Lord. Several, however, have made the statement that there is no revealed location for the Book of Mormon cultures other than that they came from the old world and settled somewhere on the American continents. The Book of Mormon contains over 500 verses that relate to or describe aspects of the geography in which Book of Mormon events took place. Correlating them to produce a comprehensive picture and then fitting it to the known geography of the Americas is an enormous task but a simple general picture is easily obtained by anyone willing to invest a little effort. The availability of tools such as Google Earth allows anyone to cruise the American continents and compare the three dimentional geography to that describerd in the 22nd chapter of Alma. This is commonly called Mormon's Map because it is an insert writtem by Mormon to describe the territorial relationship between the Nephites and the Lamanites at the time of Ammon's mission to the Lamanites. 10. In starting this thread, I posed the question What is the only Authoritative source we have for the geography of the Book of Mormon cultures? The only archeological ruins I have visited are those at Teotihuacan and Tula that are located just north of Mexico City. When I first started this study while serving my mission in Mexico, I was convinced that these ruins had to be from the Book of Mormon culture. However as I studied the Book of Mormon over the years I came to realize that the area did not fit the geographic discriptions found in the text of the book itself. Over the years I have listened to many people tell me that they have visited this ruin or that one and are certain that it must have been built by the Nephites. We have too much of a tendency to see what we find to be amazing or beautiful and immediately conclude it must have been the Nephites because how could those awfull Lamanites ever create anything like this. Unfortunately the Nephites were probably not the only culture capable of building amazing or wonderful things. The Maya culture, the culture resposible for most of the amazing buildings commonly visited by tourists, built these structures sometime between 400 and 800 AD, long after the destruction of the Nephite culture. The BofM also talks about Ammons missionary trip to the Lamanites where the Lamanite King lived in a palace and had many servants and riches. Back to my question, Where must we turn in order to evaluate whether our proposal for the geography has merit? Larry P
  11. I think and hope it is just a phase. Be gentle with him but teach him that there are rules that must be obeyed. We have an autistic grandchild who is now 26 years old. He enjoys going to church but will not sit in the meeting during the talks. He does however insist on helping pass the sacrament and is very concientious about being there every Sunday to do so. After passing the Sacrament he tends to wander the halls all by himself until Pristhood meeting where he attends opening exercises and then back to the halls. Everybody knows him and knows his situation. They are always good to him and talk to him when he wants a bit of conversation. Take heart, things will change as he matures and gets past the teenage years. Larry P
  12. Welcome GG UMWs forever. However if you take over here . Where will us poor males go for peace and quiet? Larry P
  13. No, what he was saying was that if you tilted the map, it would fit with his concept of Book of Mormon geography. A good example of a bad assumption. Why should we have to tilt the map in order to make it fit the geography? In particular, if the translation was into the English language of the 19th century and was done under the influence of the Holy Ghost, should the directions not be correct as we understand them or at least as Joseph Smith understood them at the time of the translation. After examination of the 1828 Webster dictionary, which reflects the language as spoken in Joseph Smith's day, I find little difference in the meaning of directional terms in his day with those of today. Perhaps we should examine first the use of directional terms in the Book of Mormon text and compare them with similar concepts in pre columbian cultures of the Americas or for that matter with ancient cultures of the old world. For example, our English word "east" originated in the Germanic culture and had the meaning of "the dawn" or the direction of sunrise. They did not think of it as a compasss point as we do, in fact they did not even have compasses. We obtained the compass from the Chinese well into the middle ages, long after Lehi and his family left Jerusalem. This concept is true for both Hebrew and Latin. In these languages the word which is translated as east actually means sunrise. Our word orient meaning to detrmine where we are, comes from the Latin word oriens which means where the sun originates or rises. Orient means to relate our position to where the sun rises or to a compass point. Anciently this was done with respect to sunrise however since a magnetic compass always points north, over time, we have changed to an orientation with the northen or southern magnetic pole. Because, in all probability, the Book of Mormon cultures oriented themselves based on sunrise, it is difficult for me to believe that they were unaware of where the sun rose and therefore erroneously tilted ther concept of direction and Joseph Smith then translated this erroneous concept of direction. In my opinion, too many bad assumptions. Larry P
  14. Yediyd requested a thread on Book of Mormon Geography so here goes. I will start out with a question. What is the only Authoritative source we have for the geography of the Book of Mormon cultures? Although I have invested many hours, even days investigating this topic, I still maintain and admonish others to figure it out for themselves. Set your own rules for analysis of data and information. In doing so examine your assumptions and preconcieved conclusions. Any conclusions based on a false assumption is no better than the assumption. My basic assumtion is found on the first page of the Book of Mormon where Mormon tells us the Lord's purpose for the Book of Mormon. It was translated by the power of God for our benefit and understanding. We should not have to be trained archeologists or hold a doctorate in ancient languages and history in order to understand its message. This is not only true of the Gospel message contained therein but of the geographic information and descriptions, what little there is, found in the translated text. Larry P
  15. Yediyd Being a single mother in the Church is extremely difficult, especially if you dont have parents or other family in the Church, which is true of many converts. My daughter was a single mother for several years before she remarried. As a result we raised, for all practical purposes, two of our grandchildren. If I were you, I would be more demanding of help from priesthood leaders without becoming a burden or frustration to them. Another area is to get to know your visiting teachers, then ask them over for a light lunch or some other activity. If you dont know who they are, ask your Bishop or Relief Society President. Also check to see if your Stake has a single adult program where you can meet other single sisters and share experiences a solutions to problems. As to fitting in, many of us dont seem to fit in for one reason or another. I am basically an introvert but through determined activity and acceptance of Church callings I have been able to overcome this impediment although I only have a limited number of what I would call real friends either in the Church or outside the Church. Dont let this feeling get you down or hold you back. Just remember that you are a daughter of our Heavenly Father and he wants the very best for you and your small family. Larry P
