Because stuff happens. I don't believe God runs every aspect of our lives. Genetic and even environmental issues happen. Its part of the freedom we are given.

SO, whats wrong with the public library?Don't get me wrong, I have more than 4 bookcases of books, and thats after weeding many out (I sold 250 hardcovers at a used book store a couple years back). I pretty much stopped buying books since I now have 2 public libraries within 5 miles of my home. For all you book-a-holics like me -- rather than buy books, try checking them out, then if you really really love the book you can buy a copy. You'll have much more money and lots less to move and you'll still have read all the books you want to.

I have covenanted not to partake of coffee -- period. That covenant did not have any clauses saying 'except when used as an ingrediant'. To me, you either follow the Covenant you made or you don't - you've got your freedom to choose, but lets not pretend that it doesn't count.

No we don't. We consider their words to be counsel unless they are cannonized. (signed by the F.P. and Qof12 and read either over the pulpit or sustained at General Conference.Don't get me wrong here people, I believe in Heavenly Mother, but its INFERRED from doctrine, not doctrine. That may be picky but its a very important distinction. Not everything out of a Prophets mouth is doctrine. -

And that is proof for you, however its not proof for the entire Church. You are entitled to revelation for yourself and those you have stewardship over, but its not binding on anyone else -

Its a great source for learning, and its the reason they are published, but new doctrine will not be published there first. If you can't find something in the Standard works, or a declararion signed by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve, while it may be 100% true, its not doctrine. -

Sorry Anthony, I don't buy your assumptions at all. Interesting thought though. -

Actually, not in the LDS Church, its the most logical Church I have ever studied about, (and I visited and studied a lot of different Churches before joining), everything makes sense. -

I agree, Hymns contain doctrine, but they do not declare doctrine, same with Sunday School Manuals, Priesthood/ Relief Society Manuals, etc. They are all a good source to learn about doctrine, but not a place that new doctrine is declared. Now to speak about whether we believe God has a wife, yes we do, but because it is inferred from everything else we have as doctrine. As to whether they have sex? why not, is sex wrong? sinful? dirty? Sex between my wife and I is not; wrong, sinful or dirty, why should it be between 2 beings with infinitly more capicity to love than we have right now? We are created in the image of God, male and female. Why wouldn't someone assume He and His wife share themselves with each other? -
Christ in the Book of Mormon

I agree with you they were not pure gold and no one in the Church has ever said they were. However as far as lifting them, they were leaves not solid. Think a few hundred sheets of heavy duty tin foil.Best estimates are under 60 pounds. Very carryable, especially for someone used to farm work in the 1800's. -

Christ in the Book of Mormon

Thats not quite right, the first half (or so) of the O.T. had been written, but not the latter booksAs far as why isn't the O.T. more explicet about Christ -- IMHO Israel had a history of rejecting the Prophets, the Nephites did not. -

Why are you afraid to open your own Bible and look up a verse? If you are unwilling to read the verse from your own Bible then there really is no more we can do for you. There is really no point in continuing this conversation if you won't even do that one little thing, is there? -

Funny then that the Bible says differently: Seems pretty clear to me, we're not asking you to take our word for it -- open up your Bible and see if it doesn't say the exact same thing. What first hand experience do you have with Masons? What Precisley do you have against Masons, what is it about them that is bad? They sound pretty good to me. Please read the below quotes and tell me what is so bad about Masons. from : http://www.mastermason.com/jjcrowder/mason/mason.html -
Even those candidates who say they are against abortion do nothing about it when they are elected, its all smoke and mirrors, and much of the U.S. public has been falling for it for decades.

Herbal teas are found in Temple cafeteria's -- in the older, bigger, much used Temples that have cafeterias. -
They were wrong - 100% wrong. Its not caffeine, its not tannic acid or anything else that men come up with as an excuse. Mankind wants to come up with reasons for everything so they start speculating -- much of the Anti material out there is there because people have speculated when they should not have. God Commanded, I Covenanted, end of story.

Help
mnn727 replied to IronLion's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
I've never put my soul in the hands of Joseph Smith and I joined 15+ years ago as an adult in my 30's. I still don't. My soul is in the hands of God the Father and His son Jesus.I had my doubts also when I first read the BoM. at one point I took it and tossed it across the room in disgust. It was right after I read Ether 9:19 saying the Jaredites had horses and elephants. I tossed it so hard it hit the wall and went behind my entertainment center which made it hard to retrieve. Funny thing about that passage, God had something different in mind for me, that very week I was flipping through the channels and came across a show on Discovery Channel that was talking about the Pacific Coast Pygmy Elephants that lived in Southern California, Mexico and parts of Central America and they've found bones dated between 5000 - 10,000 years ago, which puts it just barely in the time line for the Jaredites. In researching horses, while they were not plentiful until the Spanish Conquistadors brought them over, archeoligists have found bones dating prior to that time in the America's. I moved the entertainment center and retreived the BoM. As far as getting an answer to my prayers -- at least the kind of answer I was looking for (in looking back I see I was getting answers all along, I just wasn't paying atention) I didn't get the obvious kind of answer I was looking for until I changed my prayers. Originally I was praying to find out if the Church was true, but I didn't get my answer until I changed that to add "and I'll do what you want me to do if you would show me". You see wanting to know is just not enough, what God is looking for is the willingness to DO, to act upon that knowledge, and I am not just talking lip service here. I had been reading and going to Church for almost a year and I really liked what I heard and felt, but until I was willing to act on that, to do what God wanted me to, I did not get my answer. Once I was honestly willing to act, I got my answer within the month. I had what we call "a mighty change of heart" John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. Oh and BTW: I didn't have a testimony that Joseph was a Prophet until after my baptism, about 8 -10 months after -- but thats a whole different story. -
