Don't shift into fear mode

There is a very good article in Mormon Times published by Deseret News that talks about the "Fear Mode" that so many are pushing.

Its called Pushing for the Pantry. Here are some quotes from the article ...

1) "Don't shift to fear mode. Just continue to do your best."

2) "The message was simplified and meant to encourage. Members were counseled that sustained, "small" efforts would go a long way toward fulfilling the commandment to establish a food storage and realizing the blessings of preparing for adversity. One year later, that counsel looms large.

Bahahahaaaa....I need to tell my wife about that one [after hearing about the Rice shortage and rising food costs].

Yep, tell your wife not to be skeeered! But continue to work on the food storage. I think its more about attitude. One of the first things I teach in emergency preparedness is NOT to panic.

Thank you. I agree with you that publishing doom and gloom is unnecessary. It is important to stay educated and up to speed on current events, but waving a giant red flag like there's no tomorrow seems inappropriate. I hope we can all be vigilant in keeping up with current events, educate ourselves better on economic and political maneuvering and always be prepared or work on being prepared for it.

We agree, yep, posting events make sense. Prophecy by someone with no authority is over the line in my opinion.

The goal that most of us in preparedness really want is for people to start preparing with food storage etc. If we push too hard and present wild predictions, we lose credibility and thus nothing gets done.

This is why you'll see me use historic events to encourage people to prepare. Good examples are the Teton dam break, Katrina and the Asian Tsunami. It is my firm belief that once people start to prepare, the spirit will guide them, and that’s all I am looking for! I've seen it happen with many members and its a wonderful sight.

A sense of urgency is not the same is being scared. In my opinion, being scared has a note of hopelessness. This is not the case with Preparedness and Heavenly Father's plan in my opinion. One can have a sense of urgency while searching to fulfill their 1 year supply for example. This is the correct motivation in my opinion.

Ultimately, its a message of hope. Which should be familiar to every latter-day saint. This is in fact the connection between temporal preparedness and spiritual preparedness spoke about in Matthew 25.

Even though we have personal revelations, we can collaborated, we can compare with what we receive. I for one, have no problem in listening to someone elses testimony, visions, dreams, inspirations, or viewpoints; I will compare it to what I was given, to those of the prophets, or called by the same.

I like doom and gloom. That's what nudged me into taking my food storage from a six months supply to a two year supply (and three on the powdered milk). I started seeing doom and gloom reports last fall and that's all it took to put me into food storage hypermode. Now I feel fantastic knowing I'm prepared. I even stocked up on non-food items, clothes, blankets, etc. (and water :) I was fortunate to kick into hypermode starting last fall before the prices really shot up. I sleep well at night now.

My next goal is seven years on the grains, and a full year on the water storage. I currently have one month's worth of water. (However, I can see Lake Michigan from my backyard, so I have quite the "backup system" of water available...hahaha)

When I was a young teenager, I was returning to my home town from Stake Conference. I was due to have dinner with the family that introduced me into the church. I had a 1972 Chevrolet two door Nova. It was my very first car.

While on my way to dinner, I had a revelation. This wasn’t like the still small voice or promptings to do something specific. This revelation was pure knowledge about the future.

While I was driving I knew that I would be in an accident. I didn’t know where or when, only that there was no doubt that I would. I remember thinking to myself that this was an unusual event for me. I wasn’t scared or anything. I just knew it was going to happen. I knew the source of it was authentic. I admit, I was somewhat excited that I would be given such knowledge. I never wore my seat belt before in that car. The car was older, and didn’t have convenient shoulder belts. They were folded up near the corner where the door meets the ceiling of the car. It took a few minutes to figure it out, but I got my shoulder belt and lap belt secure.

On the way home I started to doubt what I had received. I then traversed on overpass and noticed the traffic was blocked ahead. I slowed down to a stop. I still had several car lengths in front of me and for some reason it felt right to have that many lengths in front of me. When I looked in my rearview mirror, I noticed a car cresting over the same overpass behind me. It felt right to move forward and creep up to the next car, just to ‘give a little more room’ for the person behind me to stop. I traveled about one car length and was still creeping forward. I felt a tremendous impact from the rear. My head hit the steering wheel and my car lunged and hit the car in front of me that was stopped there. I checked myself. No cuts on my forehead from the impact, and no pain, of any kind.

I got out of my car and noticed the chaos. I moved my car off to the side and started barking orders for someone to call an ambulance; the occupants of the car that rear ended me were in bad shape. I directed traffic and helped until officers arrived a few minutes later.

I never really understood the purpose of that revelation until a few years ago. If I had told someone about the impression I had, they might think me a lunatic. Or, they might try to avoid the road I was on. Whatever the interpretation, they would have got it wrong. Because it’s not only the event that we need to prepare for, but it’s also our continued revelation on how to adjust for event. Heavenly Father protected me every step of the way so that I could be of assistance to others. He allowed me to be prepared not only before the event, but also during the event. Clearly, had I not been in tune both times, the simple knowledge of the crash itself would have been useless.

Without continued revelation on an individual basis, we are simply fooling ourselves in our preparation efforts. Clearly, the linkage between temporal preparation and spiritual guidance is not only important, but the key to us surviving the 2nd coming. Only with continued revelation can we make the adjustments necessary for our own preparation. Will it be a broken dam, radiation poisoning, or earthquakes that will affect us? Will we scramble for the airport, wait it out in a bomb shelter, or escape on an off-road vehicle? Do we spend our strength and means preparing for every possible event or just the ones we see on a forum? Or are we so close to Heavenly Father that we do as he directs us to in the only sure way that we can be safe?

The police officer told me I was lucky. The car that impacted me put their brakes on about a car length behind me. The car’s nose dove down, under my bumper and slid underneath me which cushioned the impact. Had I not moved up one car length, the damage would have been severe. The driver of the car behind me admitted they were going about 65mph at the time of the impact.

Again, as I talked about on another thread about it is is 'OK' to share personal visions, revelations, and so forth under the direction of the Spirit. It helps others around us...

Thanks for sharing your personal revelation and experiences. I for one am glad that you listened to that Spirit's prompting.

Thank you WordFlood for sharing your special experience with us.

I know that the more we hear and obey that still small voice, we will be blessed with more revelations and guidance.

I dont look upon dreams and visions of events leading up to the second coming as doom and gloom, I see it as a tool to help me prepare both temporary and spiritualy. A healthy fear is good, imho, it is a good motivator
