richlittell Posted September 25, 2008 Author Report Posted September 25, 2008 Windows only costs around 80 bucks here for the upgrade version. That being said i really do not like Linux. I've tried it and found Windows and OS X a heck of a lot better. You get what you pay for and so there would certainly be advantages to Windows and OS X over a free distribution like Linux. If I were to fork out the bucks, I think I would try OS X simply because I've had enough Windows experience to last a life time. I actually bought a new laptop with Windows Vista on it. When I got home, I wiped it out and installed Ubuntu over it.I don't know what the last distro was that you used, but the latest Ubuntu is pretty user-friendly (again, if you only need something for office productivity, email, calendars, a place to blog, surf, or to manage pictures, mp3s, and videos and are not into high powered 3D video games or professional media development). I understand some other distros are getting pretty sophisticated now too but I haven't tried any of them. Warning though, if you're not a computer wiz, don't run Ubuntu (Linux) as your only operating system on a brand new computer (unless it's a two year old model that happened to be in stock).Since Linux is free (free operating system, free applications, free everything) and gets updated/upgraded by volunteers, there is some lag time before the kernel can handle the current drivers for the newest machines--it'll work, but maybe not at optimal performance. Also, there is a list of computers at Ubuntu that are fully compatible, it'd be good to check that list before you buy a new computer. You could also check to see if an older computer you have is listed there, but even if it isn't, Ubuntu is great for almost any old computer (old but not ancient)--I've pulled a few out of the graveyard and had them up and running like a charm. Dell also sells new Ubuntu computers, but I don't know how well that has been received by consumers, they're still available though.Ubuntu is really great in these countries where wealth isn't so prominent. People who otherwise couldn't afford a computer operating system and all the extra applications they need, can get older computers and have themselves up an running in a jiffy. I think that's why Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are more popular overseas. Saving $100 bucks for them is like saving $1000 dollars, or more, for an American.I would probably still be using Windows, but I just got tired of all the freezes, reboots, system restores and paying for virus-ware every year or so (again, for poor people, that's big bucks). I"m free of all that now, starting from four years ago. So when Windows came out with Vista, I didn't even turn my head. Where was Microsoft when I needed them and was shelling out the bucks (that I didn't have) to keep my system running (and I kept my system rather lean)? I really can't understand why Microsoft doesn't come up with it's own Linux/Unix operating system. I might would look into that, but while there is OSx and plenty of Linux Distros, I'll not be craning my neck in their direction. Quote
dailyacts Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Anyone interested in changing your Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to the true gospel of Jesus Christ theme and create scripture applications with Wine 1.2.1? No, this is not a new edition of Ubuntu, it is simply changes I have made to create a spiritual LDS environment for myself. I do not have time to show you right now, however, I will post here how I did it in the next couple of days. Ubuntu for Mormons! Quote
slamjet Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Ok, there have been old posts resurrected before, but this one MUST win the prize! Quote
Mahone Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Ok, there have been old posts resurrected before, but this one MUST win the prize!Oh I've seen far, far worse. Sometimes people are actually trying to advise people who had problems 5/6 years ago. In this case, the "bumped" post isn't really that related to the OP - could have been in its own thread. Quote
pam Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 This is a newby compared to the 5+ year threads I've seen resurrected lately. Quote
slamjet Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 I should go find me and old one and bump just to annoy myself. Quote

Mahone Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Feel free. Not that I have the authority to give anyone permission but this is a forum of ideas. And there are plenty of nerd here who would like to know Absolutely :) I don't use linux for anything other than servers nowadays due to compatibility issues, but I like to keep an eye on anything linux and hopefully one day we can see it get some considerable share in the desktop market.
