bytor2112 Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 (edited) I watched a youtube video on MRM....a Mormon Outreach Ministry. The video is called the "Impossible Gospel". The audience was merrily laughing away at the suggestion that Mormons are unsuspecting dupes that don't understand their own scriptures. He was teaching a strategy that would supposedly make us Mormons confused by the words of our own scriptures and would eventually lead us to Christ. He was wearing a t-shirt that had a stop sign on it that read STOP REPENTING. As he spoke, I recognized that his targeted audience was teens....very brave. OK....so we send Missionaries to the world....including to other Christians....yet we are reverent and ackknowledge the truth and light contained in other faiths. I was struck by the fact that though he could recite what we believe....he didn't really understand what we believe. He was very hung up on the idea of perfection and the seeming contradiction that we can never be perfect. I am fairly certain I could explain it to him and he would still say...no, that's not right. They never mention the Holy Spirit.......Just some ramblings....... Edited October 28, 2008 by bytor2112 Quote
rameumptom Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 It is a straw man that they create. It makes it easier to knock down. As it is, if you can't inspire your followers to something great, then the next best thing is to inspire them to all hate the same group. After all, isn't that what Hitler did to gain power - set up the Jews as strawmen, then knock them down? He viewed our efforts from the idea of Adam's fall and "original sin". In light of the belief that all mankind is wicked and unable to do anything whatsoever to save themselves, thanks to that primeval sin, there's no way the Mormon view could ever work! They do not understand that we can toss off the natural man, and take upon us the spiritual man of Christ through the Holy Ghost. We believe that Christ did not receive a fullness at first, but went from grace to grace, receiving grace for grace. We are to do the same. And while we cannot save ourselves without Christ's infinite atoning power, we can and are commanded to do many good things of our own accord. We can be a small part of the transforming power to change us into divine beings. We believe we are of the same substance as God is. We literally are His spirit children. They do not. They believe we are of an impure substance that is totally different from God. Therefore, our view that men are God's literal children and can become divine as He is, is ludicrous in their eyes. Of course, teaching this to a bunch of teenagers, who know little of their own religion, much less that of another, is a great way to turn the next generation into a bunch of fear mongers and religious bigots. It is one thing to disagree with another religion. Even to do so vigorously. It is another thing to attack and ridicule, by setting up false examples and ideas. I would hope I never do such a thing to another religion, even if I disagree with their views and creeds. We don't deserve it, and neither do they. Quote
Justice Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 My sentiments tied up neatly in a package with a pretty bow. Quote
Elgama Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 except I don;t think you can truly understand another's faith except through the eyes of your own - I love Buddhism, Hinduism, some forms of Paganism, etc and I use a lot of their elements in my own religion to enrich it and teach my children, but I bend them to fit what I know not what the Hindu, Buddhist or Pagan knows -Charley Quote
Hemidakota Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Ignorance at best my friend but resounding arrogance on claiming to know GOD more than our own prophets. Don't waste your energy on these people sites... Quote

Prodigal_Son Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I saw crap like this all the time via my friends back in high school in the suburbs of Atlanta. I'd actually have buddies of mine say, "hey, we're learning about you guys next Sunday!"... and my follow-up on what they discussed frequently made me cringe and try to clarify the myriad contortions of our beliefs and doctrine... MrNirom Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 So.. how is that "Be ye therefore perfect... even as your Father in Heaven is perfect." working out of you? I tell them.. just fine. How is believing in Christ waiting for his grace and nothing to show him for it... working out for you? Quote
