From the Reason Can Prevail Department:

The teacher talked about a man who switched wards because the bishop would not enforce a policy of using the right hand, only, when taking or passing the Sacrament. The teacher was leading a discussion of 3 Nephi 27:13-22, and asked where in these verses was there any directive that only the right hand was to be used? The point being that Christ never taught this, so why should we think it was an issue? Then, a High Councilman who was in the class said, "it is just like people getting all contentious about whether Deacons have to wear white shirts and ties or if women should not wear pants to church". He said, "none of that has anything to do with the Gospel! The Gospel is what is in these verses and everything else is custom and culture."

I think the talk by Elder Oakes at last conference regarding Sacrament meeting covers the shirt issue. Not the gospel but the words of a living Prophet, Seer and Revelator and Apostle.

Good enough for me.

Are you likening the words of a Prophet to Jim Jones? Just trying to understand your comment.

Moksha, that is an encouraging quote. Too often people get caught up in little things and forget what's really important. I'm glad to see that everybody hasn't lost their sense of proportion! :)

So in essence you are likening those of us that follow the Prophet to those who would follow someone such as Jim Jones?

I am likening those with the attitude that they'll believe and do whatever a human being tells them no matter what, to followers of Jim Jones... Only you can decide if you are in that category.

Thanks for your story. I was at the culminating event with two of my 3 teens the other day and my oldest called and said I'm not dressed up but I can get there if I leave streight from band practice. I told him I just wanted him there. He showed up in jeans, sneakers a hoodie and his lovely peirced ears. The important thing. He was there and heard the words prepared for him. I think our job is to give people the information and then let the savior touch their hearts and they will make the changes they need as directed by him. :)

Did you know that Jesus received those thirsting for his words, even though they were dressed in rags?

Was this on Sunday? When our band director told us that the kids needed to be at a practice on Sunday we told him that they would not be there. We don't need band as much as we need to be learning more about the gospel. They are no longer in band, still can play instruments. They are in church.

Oh so sharing a personal experience is being self righteous. Sorry oh whatever you choose to be your behavior should be good. All are good and none are bad or wrong. Peace to all. Sarcasm

Ben Raines

And you have earthly idea how your post could possibly come across as self-righteous? I wasn't saying you were intending to sound that way, I employed humor so you might possibly take a second look at your post, and the way it could possibly come across to the person you were responding to. But, by all mean, get bent out of shape, it's your choice.

Seriously I don't see anything self righteous about Ben's post at all. When I was in High School and I was in drill team...they also requested we practice on Sundays. My mother also said no. She said I needed to be in Church more than I needed drill team practice. Was she also being self righteous? I don't think so. If anything both are standing up for their principles.

It's not that staying home on Sunday's is self-righteous, but imagine YOU are the one who wrote the following paragraph and that was Ben's response to YOU...

It's about standards. Following the council of the Prophet .....if that's Kool-Aid...poor me up a big glass. It isn't about the shirt...it's about reverence.....making sure that we are not taking for granted the sacredness.....

And I believe in being accountable for your own actions, if you follow a leader into folly, only YOU will be held responsible for your folly, NOT that leader.
