Mavro6000 Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 Hello, I have a question. I been a member my whole and I was just curious about the comment that the prophet Joseph Smith made to the wife of William Law about getting married to the prophet? Is this true, if so why why would he say that? Quote

Mavro6000 Posted February 6, 2009 Author Report Posted February 6, 2009 Smith proposition Law's wife, suggesting to her that it was God's will that she enter into a polyandrous marriage with Smith (even though she was still married to Law). She refused Smith's request to marry him as a polyandrous plural wife Quote

Just_A_Guy Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 To answer the original question:Joseph Smith proposed to--and even married--several women who were concurrently married to other men. That is documented fact--see, e.g., Todd Compton's In Sacred Loneliness, which is drawn from the accounts left by the women involved. We just don't know the theological reason for this. For me, it boils down to the old admonition to not let what you don't know deprive you of what you do know.FWIW, Joseph Smith also proposed to Orson Pratt's wife. Pratt left the church for a time over the issue, but ultimately returned. And Vilate Kimball's story is, I believe, common knowledge within the Church. Quote
Palerider Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 And on a serious note....a good book to read is....Joseph Smith "A Rough Stone Rolling"....some have not enjoyed this book. I read it and thought it was awesome. Quote

Mavro6000 Posted February 6, 2009 Author Report Posted February 6, 2009 SO my question is why would he ask other man's wife to marry him. I wouldn't like it to much. So, this is bothering me. Quote
Maxel Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 I think you need to go to God and find out if He will tell you the answer. The only one i can offer is that when the Church was young, all the doctrines were still getting laid out and being understood. I wouldn't be surprised that it was assumed- even by the Prophet- that a family had to be somehow connected to a prophet to inherit celestial glory. That's just my own opinion, and what I think of the matter. Quote

Mavro6000 Posted February 6, 2009 Author Report Posted February 6, 2009 Well, I guess no one is able to answer my question. I thought it was a doctrine thing, maybe a misunderstanding my the saints. Quote
