I would go to the Lord for a spiritual comfirmation. Quote

Although I'm not entirely sure the LDS thought the Salamander Letter was farsical. To be honest, I'm not sure that many Latter-day Saints even really knew about it so maybe my using it as an example was weak to begin with. Never-the-less, the people I associated with at the time knew of it, and the leadership believed in it enough to buy it, so I don't think it was taken lightly by all. Good comments though.SHAWN The leadership of whom you speak did not felt that it was authentic to the time period...not that it was an authentic letter. Granted they clearly didn't know but authentic or not it was a significant piece of LDS history...oh, BTW, you've tipped your hand. Quote
Guest Wix Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 I found the responses to this question to be very off-putting, to say the least. The charges of ulterior motives, leading astray, etc. seem to show a general lack of understanding of curiosity and the value of dialogue. IMO, the LDS church would continue with a gradual shift in emphasis. Intertwined relationships often prove to be stronger than belief in certain precepts. Quote

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much anxiety and trouble would you experience if Gordon B Hinckley announced that the BOM will no longer be considered scripture to members of the Church? If anxiety were defined as concern, and trouble were defined as difficulty, I imagine that my concerns and difficulties would probably be relative to the amount of energy I would then need to devote to the Church at the time of such an announcement, my focus being to do whatever I could to help Gordon B Hinckley and the Church to weather the storm. At such a time I’m sure I would still know the Book of Mormon is a true record of history and sacred writings from people who once lived on the American continents, but how much concern and difficulty would arise from trying have the Church or Gordon B Hinckley continue to consider those records as "scripture" to members of the Church is another matter best left to the imagination. And btw, I think we should always be willing to face any concern or difficulty that might arise when an authority of the Church tells us something, but that concern and difficulty should be directed toward an appeal to what the Lord has to say about the issue. A testimony from a run-of-the-mill member of the Church might be laced with more or less truth than a testimony from a Church authority, or both could be totally false, so a testimony from God is the only testimony that is reliable. Shawn Posted August 10, 2005 Author Report Posted August 10, 2005 oh, BTW, you've tipped your hand. Okay, I'll bite. Continuing with your poker analogy, which cards did I show? And why do you liken my responses here to exposing something I really want to keep secret?IJA,Shawn Quote
