i need your help please

hi im new to this site but not new to the church i have been a member for a number of years thanks to some fantastic missionaries ,i have had many callings but my new one is going to be a hard one i have been called as music leader in relief society arh i can't hold a note and i have never conducted but i am learnig . i have to pick 3 hyms for this weeks lesson Come Unto Him by Elder Anderson could any one plz give me some help as to which 3 to pick easy ones to conduct as well please as i dont want to let the sisters down my first week thank you so much xx

Conducting Music - LDS Church Music

Don't forget to ask your ward chorister (person who leads music in Sacrament meeting), organist or other ward musicians for help!

I assume you pick this music out of the Hymn book. If you go to the back of the Hymn book (green one) it has some info about how to cunduct. It also has songs listed in catagory and title and so forth. Read that, and you should be set!

I was the Relief Society choirister a few years back and I learned one thing about it that helped keep me from freaking out everytime I went up there. People don't really watch you. They may look at you to see when the song starts and when you are ending it, but for the most part they can sing the song without looking at the choirister. When I served there were a few ladies who offered to help me learn how to direct the beats. Though it was a nerve wracking calling (for me at least, it was all the standing up in front of a bunch of people thing) it got better over time. Good luck with it, I am sure you will be awesome!

i recently got called as our branch music person.... can't sing, never even thought about conducting, no musical talent what so ever.... i ended up with the calling cause our branch got one of the new organ/pianos they have been putting in buildings. it has songs programed in and will play itself. i was the only one that had taken the time to play with it and knew how to work it. yay me. lol that's what i get for being curious. i spent the next week immersing myself in the back of the hymn book learning to conduct. it really is pretty simple.....

some tips that have made it easier for me...

- keep the songs to 2/2 - 2/4 or 3/4 - 3/2 or 4/4.... get those down first

- pick songs you know the words to really well so you don't have to think about that

- i own a copy of the hymn book (the ward might let you use an old one if you don't have one) so i got some colored pencils and wrote in it. 2's in one color, 3's in another, 4 in another.... i connected the measure lines across the words... that way i can see where that is and still look at the words. this makes the biggest difference for me... the different colors just remind me what i'm doing in case i forget... yes i have that short of a memory on some things. using a 4th color i marked the intro brackets...whatever those are called... and circled the hymn number so i could see quickly which songs i know (after getting more comfortable that i can do it i circled all the ones programed in the organ). lol

- once i picked a song, marked it up (i just did this in pencil till i realized what all i needed then i did the color bit) i pulled up the church site where you can play the songs. i played the song (with words) over and over trying to make my conducting match what they were singing. took me hours to get that first song down but once i did the next song came easier. i started with "god speed the right" # 106. once i got where i could conduct that one with the words and i felt good about it then i played it without the words till i got it right. then i picked another song. i'm learning one song at a time.

starting on the up beat instead of the down was confusing for me at first. also getting the hang of keeping my hand moving though the words may stop or be held out was hard for me. my natural tendency was to follow the words... doesn't quite work that way. lol

once you learn the first hand full of songs they get easier. fyi "families can be together forever" i found to be a tricky one. lol

for your topic (not sure if you know these).... "come, follow me" #116 is an easy one

"come, ye children of the lord" # 58 also an easy one

"o love that glorifies the son" # 295 (i don't know the words that well but not to hard to conduct, might make a good practice song if yall do those)

"israel, israel, god is calling" #7 (takes a little to get the hang of but not bad with some practice)
