rameumptom Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 CATO Institute uses the Congressional Budget Office's estimates to see just where our nation is going. My Big Fat Greek Budget | Cato @ LibertyLast year's CBO estimate, not including Obamacare, will take us from the fed government being 25% of GDP to over 40% (where France sits), perhaps higher if one uses the less optimistic numbers. And when you add the 15% of GDP that most states also burn up, we're 60%+ of GDP taken from the sectors that create real growth (private businesses). With higher than 60% GDP burned in fed/state governments, we're approaching North Korea and Cuba's power over their nations.Again, this does not include Obamacare, which adds an additional $1 Trillion of expense over the next 10 years, and continues rising beyond that. We may make European socialism look like free nations. Quote

rameumptom Posted March 25, 2010 Author Report Posted March 25, 2010 France is looking to pass a law prohibiting burkhas. How is that freedom in action? Freedom is almost always tied to property ownership, which includes freedom from excessive taxation and regulation. Quote

Freedom is almost always tied to property ownership, which includes freedom from excessive taxation and regulation. The United States passed a law stating the government could take someone they suspected of a crime, hold him indefinitely without trial and without charging him. They called it the Patriot Act.In France, people might pass a law preventing the wearing of Burkhas. In the US, a law was definitely passed allowing people to be stolen away in the dead of night and locked away forever without being charged.Single acts do not define a country. Quote

But one daft law does not mean the rest of us are upto the same thing. And when has anyone not been able to buy property in europe (if they can afford it), and even when I didn't own property I still had the same rights and freedoms as I do now. I don't pay excessive taxes either and get good services and healthcare in return. Quote

Dravin Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 Single acts do not define a country.Nope but they make great headlines.Personally if I had to contrast Europe's (which is quite a broad category, how many countries is that? I've googled different counts) freedoms with our own I'd say they emphasize different things where it concerns Freedom. To an American laws against holocaust denying are beyond the pale, for someone in France a right to work state is a horrible loss of worker freedoms. *shrug* Quote

Single acts do not define a country, but it can show the direction the nation is headed. The Patriot Act shows that we were beginning to give up our freedoms under Bush. Under Obama, it seems we are accelerating that process. Quote
