Fiannan Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Fulla sells better because it is closer to our Arab values: she never reveals a leg or an arm," says Tarek Mohammed, chief salesman at a Toys'R'Us branch in Mohandessin, one of Cairo's more upmarket neighbourhoods. The Arab answer to Barbie has been selling like hot cakes for Eid Al-Adha, the most important holiday in the Muslim calendar, not least because it is cheaper than its American rival, although both are made in China.Fulla is not the first Islamic doll but none of her predecessors have taken the regional market by storm like she has, selling some two million since its creation two years ago by the Emirates-based NewBoy Design Studio.Saudi Arabia's religious police had then just banned "Barbie the Jewish doll", whose "revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessories and tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted West."http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/afplifestylearabegyptYou know, I tried to keep my daughters away from Barbie for the longest time but eventually the wife gave in. I am pleased that they still prefer dolls that resemble babies or the fully dressed Russian dolls I have bought for them. It might be interesting to add this doll to my daughter's collection. Quote
Outshined Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Sure, it would add a a nice accent to my Iraqi uniform and my framed Saddam Hussein business card. It's cool in its own way. Quote
Aristotle Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 I saw that ad on TV, and no, as an American, I wouldn't buy it for my daughter. I think it's great for the Iraqis though. Quote
Guest Monica Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 What if you are a doll collector? Quote
Lindy Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 If I collected Barbie dolls from around the world...yes I would buy it...it has it's own culture and class alongside the hoochy barbies we are so used to. Quote
CharlieDesRosiers Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I think the doll is a brilliant idea. Cultural assimilation is barbaric. Quote
pushka Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 Yes I'd buy it...just think of how your child could use it's imagination even more, to create stories surrounding our multicultural society..brilliant! Quote
Aristotle Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 What if you are a doll collector? If I were a doll collector, I would buy it...it is sure to be a collector's item. I wouldn't want my daughter to get the wrong idea about having to cover herself from head to toe to appease a man. ;-)On the other hand, I wouldn't (and didn't) buy the "hoochie mama" Barbies for my daughter. BTW, did you know that the designers made Barbie a bit plumper, to be more realistic. The average size of American women is 14. Marilyn Monroe was a size 14...which proves you don't have to be anorexic to be sexy! Quote

But Marilyn Monroe did not wear a present day size 14. The measurements of ladies clothing sizes has increased over the years. From what I understand, she was really around a size 8! Quote

Outshined Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 It's a fat, lazy nation. One of the reasons those Middle East extremists dislike us; the opulent lifestyle. Quote
Fiannan Posted January 23, 2006 Author Report Posted January 23, 2006 Here's one doll you can get any female relative who has decided that getting married and having kids is just not important:http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=1-1141846500-0# Quote
Aristotle Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I would hate wearing all those clothes in the Middle East...but I reckon men don't want their women showing off their beauty. ;-) - Mrs. A Quote
Outshined Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 It has nothing to do with the men. It's Shar'ia law. Read up on the Middle East; chances are they know much more about your culture than you know about theirs... Quote

Never having had children, her cats are her babies. She gets very upset whenever they pass to the other side, and mourns their passing, as you would losing a family member. Quote

Josie Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I would buy the doll and I don't think it was created to have anything to do with anything but the culture of those people in that part of the world and I think it is wonderful for the little girls and for the doll collectors. Quote

Fiannan Posted January 24, 2006 Author Report Posted January 24, 2006 Back to topic -- does anyone recall the REAL original Barbie doll, or the doll that inspired the creation of Barbie? Really interesting trivia. Quote
Aristotle Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 I'm not that old... LOL I do remember a news story about a woman who had plastic surgery to look like Barbie. Quote
