albertinamel Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I heard that ridiculous rumor about the broken cross as a teenager back in the 80s. The whole idea of the peace symbol as some sort of anti-Christian rune started in an article publshed in 1970 and has been perpetuated by radical Christian preachers of various denominations, including uninformed LDS seminary instructors, like mine. It was repeated by Christian preacher, Bob Larson, in his 1989 book "Satanism: The Seduction of America's Youth." (As a side note... how many kids do you really know who, even if they get into trouble with drugs and alcohol, do so b/c they're involved in Satanism? I mean, really! Satanism is not exactly a widespread problem. Lack of education about the detrimental effects of drugs, sex, and alcohol on your life is much more to blame than Satan worship. Puh-lease!) Anyone who actually cares to research it quickly learns that the sign was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom as part of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in England. It is made from the semaphore symbols for "C" and "N" and "D". A peace sign is simply a peace sign. My six-year-old is a sucker for anything w/a peace sign, and she dresses in peace signs and daisies frequently. It's adorable, and there is nothing wrong with it. If anyone else wants to believe something different, then don't wear one. But "as for me and my house," we will continue to wear peace symbols. Peace out! Tina Quote
Blackmarch Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 I heard someone today refer to the peace symbol actually being a broken cross which implies it has a deeper meaning. Does anyone have any addition info or references on this? I'm interested in learning more.the peace symbol comes from the flag signal for the letters N and D, which stands for Nuclear Disarmament. George_Stanford Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 For an insight into how the "broken cross" was created, see my blogCLEAR VIEW: ON THE TRAIL OF THE WITCH'S FOOT: HOW THE JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY CREATED A MYTH ABOUT THE PEACE SIGN Quote
Vort Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 The piece sign represents a pie cut into pieces. An unfortunate typographical error resulted in today's "peace" sign. Quote
