anzcmz Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Hi all, I am 24 and have only been in the Church for a little over a year. My Bishop assigned me to complete the Laurel Section of Personal Progress, and since I have never done Personal Progress before, I'm a little confused about what exactly I'm supposed to do. Please help!!! Thank you! Quote
Wingnut Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Hi all,I am 24 and have only been in the Church for a little over a year. My Bishop assigned me to complete the Laurel Section of Personal Progress, and since I have never done Personal Progress before, I'm a little confused about what exactly I'm supposed to do.Please help!!!Thank you!Lol. Your bishop is apparently a little outdated. Formerly, the PP program was set up so that you worked on a specific sections a year at a time, and the Laurels (16-17 year olds) did more time-consuming projects, rather than smaller, individual goals. It was two projects for each of those years, and each one had to be a different one of the seven Young Woman values. It's changed now so that there are specific smaller goals for each value, but all young women must complete a 10 hour project for each and every one of the (now) eight YW values. There is no longer any order to completion, only that all the goals must be completed for a given value prior to starting the project on that value. But you may work at any pace you want, and finish as early as you want. For example, I am the YW president in my ward. I have a girl who turned 12 and entered the YW program last November. Yesterday she told me that she only has two more values left to complete. I (or one of my counselors) need to sit down with her and go over things to make sure, but she's not even 13 yet.I would talk with your ward YW president and then go back to your bishop and let him know that it is no longer an age-based program, and you need a little clarification. Are there specific values he wants you to work on? Or does he want you to just do a project for each of the values? Quote
anzcmz Posted August 16, 2010 Author Report Posted August 16, 2010 I'm honestly not quite sure exactly what he wanted me to do. My husband and I are trying to get into the Temple at some point in the near future, so I don't know. That's why he assigned the Personal Progress to me. Thanks for the quick response! Quote
Wingnut Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 When I was in YW, we were under the old format. A few years later, they changed to the current one (still about 7-8 years ago, though). This past January they printed and distributed new books and other materials under the same format but with the addition of the value Virtue. Your bishop may just be stuck in 1998. :) Quote
Gwen Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 in the personal progress program there are goals and projects to complete that help to build your testimony in the gospel, give opportunities to receive personal revelation and learn how to listen to the holy ghost. i'm assuming that experience is what the bishop wants you to have. if i recall correctly (and it may also be a program no longer used) there was a pamphlet you could get for relief society that did the same kind of thing. there was no award at the end but it was designed to walk you though goals and things to build your testimony. i think that would be better suited based on my assumptions of what the bishop is looking to accomplish. lol i know a lot of assumptions. the bishop may not even know the program existed (and i don't know it it's still used but there may still be a copy in the library). anyone else remember the program? i would go back to the bishop for clarification on what the end goal is. there may be other things that will help you accomplish it better.
