Daybreak79 Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Extreme Home Makeover is building a new home for a family in the Salt Lake Valley and they are building it in the Daybreak community in South Jordan, UT (I'm pretty sure the lot they are building on is right around the corner from me ). I don't watch the show every week so they may have done this before, but this time they are not demolishing an existing home, they are just building the new house on an empty lot. pam Posted June 15, 2011 Report Posted June 15, 2011 I saw that. I've seen them building a new house when the family doesn't own the property or the house they've been living in. Such as in a rental etc. They did it for a military couple that lived in military housing. The land was donated. I watch this show all the time. Even all the reruns. :) Quote

pam Posted June 15, 2011 Report Posted June 15, 2011 I just watched a rerun episode today of a couple who had taken in 13 children. Some with special needs. Their home had been almost completely destroyed by a hurricane. Of the house that was left, they had snakes and rodents coming out of the walls. So the family moved into small travel trailer. Imagine 15 people living in small camping trailer. They cooked their meals outside on a propane stove. They had 2 very small special needs children. At the end of the show, it was announced that one of them passed away two weeks after the house was done. These shows seriously make me cry every time I watch one. Quote

If you live in Salt Lake or Utah County, come and give a hand if you can!Here is an email I received today:The project is still in great need of volunteers to help with the build, especially during the overnight shifts. Please help us spread the word about the current needs and direct people to register online at Get Involved, Donate Time and Money | Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The website currently does not allow volunteers to register for more than one shift at a time. We would LOVE for everyone to register for as many shifts as possible - just note that you do have to complete the form separately for each shift you want to register for. We are also still in great need of food vendors that can supply full meals for up to 300 volunteers at one time during the build. john doe Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I dunno about this kind of thing. Yeah, it's nice that they are doing something nice for people who have come upon hard times, but it seems to me that in this real estate market they could have found an existing empty home that would have fit the needs of the people fairly easily. I know it defeats the purpose of the show to just buy an existing home and give it to the family, but it seems to me to be a bit wasteful to build one and give it to them just to say you built them a home. Or maybe I'm just being cynical knowing that they won't be building me a new house for free anytime soon. Personally, I would like to see them go to Joplin MO and just start building house after house for people who lost everything in the tornadoes. But then that wouldn't be very good TV, would it? Quote

We drove by today and I was impressed with all the solar panels. There were even solar panels in the wall around the patio. Patty B Quote
