Guest ApostleKnight Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Something I read in another thread got me thinking about "words of wisdom." This thread is for anyone who has any quotes or original words of wisdom or insightful quotes. This is going to be a serious thread. I'll delete any flippant, antagonistic and/or irrelevant posts. I'll start with a couple I've gathered over the years: "The lower your standards are, the easier it is to trip over them." "There is no vessel as whole as a broken heart." "God didn't come down to earth in the image of man; man came down to earth in the image of God." "The size of a man is measured by the size of the thing that makes him angry." "The key to happiness is to count your blessings while others are adding up their troubles." I have many more, but this'll do for now. Anyone else have anything valuable to add to the wisdom well? Bring it! Quote
BenRaines Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 My wife has kept this one on our fridge for over 20 years. We are spiritual beings here on earth to experience human things. Not human beings here on earth to experience spiritual things. Ben Raines Quote
john doe Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 I like that one, Ben. Is there a source for it? Quote

Maureen Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 <div class='quotemain'>I'll delete any flippant, antagonistic and/or irrelevant posts.Nice tone with which to begin the thread. I think it was just meant as a "heads up" for those who like to cause trouble. "Promises may make friends, but it is performances that keep them." (German proverb, I think)This one was from my MIL:"The first baby is for practice; after the other babies come, you can throw the first one away." M. Quote
Ray Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Humans who think or act like they already know everything only show they don’t really know God. People who assume other people are like them only show they don’t know other people or God. Only God really knows all there is that is good and to know all of them we first must know God. If all the world was a stage and I was one of the actors, I would act like I wanted to know God. If there is anything worth knowing I want to know what it is and to show it I will learn to know God. These are just a few thoughts off the top of my head, and I’m still trying to learn to know God. Quote
miztrniceguy Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 my quote was tounge in cheek....not by any means to impli or anyone else should actually lower their standards...actually was something told to me several times. Quote
Ray Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Being quiet would mean nothing, and speaking would mean nothing, if we already knew what was right. And when we speak we should try to only speak the truth, otherwise it would be best to keep quiet. Quote
Guest ApostleKnight Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Maureen is right, Shan. I'm just warning troublemakers not to try to derail the thread. miztrniceguy, my old high school band teacher many years ago would say the same thing: "My wife asked me how my day was. I told her it was great: I had low standards and everybody met them." :) I know you weren't talking about lowering gospel standards. Thanks everyone for the input, it's great reading! I'll add another one: ApostleKnight's Grocery Rules: #1: When you're in a hurry, people in the express checkout never have 10 items or less. #2: If they do, one of their items will cause the UPC scanner to freeze for as long as it'd take for you to get where you're going. #3: If you think you can dodge rules #1 and #2 by going to a regular checkout with only one person in it, they will have a child off getting some forgotten item. This last-minute search will last for as long as it'd take for you to get where you're going. #4: If you're in a hurry and still think you can avoid rules #1, #2 and #3 by using the self-checkout, don't bother: it broke the minute you walked in the store. :) Quote

That's a bummer!!! What wisdom can you offer to overcome that?Maybe don't go buy groceries when you are in a hurry, or don't be in a hurry to buy groceries? Maybe stock up the pantry so you have what you need, especially for when you are in a hurry? Quote

Ray Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Treat others like they want to be treated, and forget yourself. Deal justly. Remember that everyone is related to people who love them... as they are... and that we can always do better to love those who love us. Quote

LionHeart Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 - Every quarrel is a private one; outsiders are not welcome. - Never saw on the branch that's supporting you; unless you're being hung from it. - After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good, he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: when you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut. - If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging. - Never ask a barber if he thinks you need a haircut. - Good judgement comes from experience; and alot of that comes from bad judgement. - A woman's heart is like a campfire; if you don't tend to it regularly, you'll soon lose it.
