She sent me an email telling me I was right. Unfortunately, her husband had gotten my book and thought I was telling people to believe in polygamy and seek it out. He was way off base. She then told me that his great grandfather was an apostle and temple worker and has instructed his own son to take a second wife. Because he had this lineage he felt that the Mormon church was wrong and that he should take a second wife because he was descended from these great blessed people.

So sorry that happened to you! No matter how careful we are, sometimes people take things in a way we didn't intend.

It is my understanding we did polygamy because there were a lot of women whose husbands were killed because they were mormon leaving independence missouri and other places.

That has been taught in the Church for many years, but unfortunately the research shows that this is not true. I guess it sounded good, but the census and other demographic data from the mid 1800's to the turn of the century don't support that view. See Sacred-Loneliness-Plural-Wives-Joseph or Joseph-Smith-Rough-Stone-Rolling both books are written by members of the Church.

Are there mormons in Utah that still think polygamy was a good idea and want it back so they can practice it?

Unfortunately, yes, there are. All of my grandparents grew up in the Mexican polygamous colonies. And while I support them and their parents in their religious convictions, I am grateful that I am not called to be a polygamist.

It has always been my understanding that know one I know thinks it is a good idea. We have seen in the news the fundamental LDS attacked because of child predators and just extremely young brides. I can't imagine any mormon actually thinking that it would be cool if we could practice polygamy.

Especially if they know the history, doctrine & such. I'm with you.

BTW, my last living relative that was properly married & sealed as a third living wife to my GGrandpa died in 1976 in Provo, when I was a teenager. I think that's pretty cool.

It's kind of hard to be a LDS author when you don't believe in polygamy. That is why I don't write doctorine for the church and write on safer topics that leave my personal believes out of it. This is the one topic that rips my heart apart. I am a mother and a great one. I don't work fulltime and my kids are in school. I am a master's degree in medicine, I am obviously educated and write books. I have always felt like polygamy was demeaning to women.

And it disheartens me greatly that my questions was misconstruded as my like for polygamy by this reader's husband and some sort of twisted validation for him.

If you could explain to me why polygamy is not demeaning to woman. And how could it possibly fit into this life now that would be helpful.

They needed someone to help them out and the families.....because women didn't have jobs at the time. If there was another reason I forgot.

So you give advice about marriage relating to polygamy but you are acquainted with polygamy itself?

How many of Joseph Smith's wives do you think had their husband killed leaving Independence?

Like I said, that's a hard thing to bear, but we really can't avoid it, no matter how clear we try to be. Part of the condition of mortality.

I cannot. I know that it doesn't *have* to be. Out of my three GGrandparent's plural marriages, only one was beautiful, fulfilling to all partners, and Christlike in practically every way. Only one.

And how could it possibly fit into this life now that would be helpful.

Well, it's more likely to be legal now that the gay marriage thing is happening. That's irony for you.

Question: Could anyone practice polygamy or was it just a small very small percent in the church. I was told only people that Joseph found worthy could do that. Or was it like it is now in the fundamental church were any FLDS can do it if they want?

At first (during Joseph's lifetime) it was a very small group that were asked. Later when Brigham Young institutionalized it within the Church, everyone was asked to qualify for it. Kinda like today where all the members are asked to be temple worthy and get a recommend.

And is it true that Bringham's youngest wife was 13?

I think it was 14. And that was quite common back then. In many states, the marriageable age for women was 12.

Is the fundamental LDS a mirror image of what were were minus the outfits they wear?

?

HiJolly, not to burst your bubble or give you nightmares...but I think we're probably related. My grandparents are also from the Mexican polygamous colonies. It's possible we aren't related, but if I play the polygamy statistics in a small community like the colonies, I'd bet we are.

Hi Jolly,

Thank you for your answers. I finally figured out this site is not followed by just members of the church but by antimormon people that don't take anything seriously and feel demeaning you makes them feel better about themselves. What a very sad site. I will be telling everyone at Cedar Fort publishing to stay clear of this site.

You're welcome.

I don't think that's a valid reason to stay clear. Hearing other, even opposing, viewpoints can be very helpful. Unless you're a patriarch...

ROFL. No nightmares, I and my subconscious mind are happy partners.

That sounds odd. First, I don't know any anti-mormons who frequent this site. Second, some of us buy lots of books from Cedar Fort - me for example so, if "Cedar Fort" were to want to post on message boards, this is probably the exact kind of place they'd want to visit, don't you think?

Maybe I have one of your books. What are the names of what you have written?

Oh, baloney. Just because people disagree with you doesn't make them possesed by Satan or anti-Mormon. I'm an RM from Israel and before moving to the US was 2nd counsellor in the branch presidency, as well as having a disctrict calling, and a couple of other callings in my branch. Your attitude is one of the reasons why I often find remaining active in Utah a struggle.
