Dr T Posted January 15, 2008 Author Report Posted January 15, 2008 Hot off the press- Study: Violent crime linked to alcohol Thank God for research! Comments | Recommend“If you really want to have effective policies related to drugs, if you want to have fewer bad outcomes in terms of health, welfare and violence, the drug you want to focus on is alcohol.” Robert Parker lead investigator of a study on alcohol crime by UnPATRICK THATCHER Staff WriterJanuary 14, 2008 - 3:32PMVICTORVILLE — Meth. Crack. Heroin.Hard-drug horror stories are commonplace. But local sheriff’s deputies say the most common drug of choice linked to violent crime isn’t cocaine or PCP. It’s alcohol.“We deal with more violent crimes where the suspects have been drinking alcohol than have been using drugs,” said Sgt. John Mattke with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Victorville station. Mattke is a 23-year veteran and manages the drunken driving task force for the county.A study by the University of California, Riverside echoes what Mattke and his colleagues see on the street: More violent crimes are committed by people under the influence of alcohol than any other drug.Robert Parker, lead investigator for the project, said a survey of crime victims showed that more than one-fourth of the assailants in violent crimes were reported by victims to be under the influence of alcohol. Fewer than 10 percent were under the influence of illegal drugs, the study reported.“If you really want to have effective policies related to drugs, if you want to have fewer bad outcomes in terms of health, welfare and violence, the drug you want to focus on is alcohol,” Parker said. One reason alcohol is so prevalent in violent crime is because it is readily available.Mattke said there are violent crimes that occasionally involve drug use, but it is more common to see a suspect under the influence of alcohol because it is so easy to get.“It’s a legal drug and it is consumed by more people, it’s in most households, it’s not against the law to have,” Mattke said. “When people do use alcohol they become less inhibited with right and wrong, and the consequences involved in those decisions.”The study was conducted by researchers at the Robert Priestly Center for Crime and Justice Studies at UC Riverside, under the direction of Parker.
