Hello all! My name is Johnathan and I'm looking for answers on Mormonism. I'm Jewish born and I currently attend a Reform synagogue with my girlfriend Edith who is also Jewish. I am curious as to what is Mormonism and what Mormons believe. Thank you for your time!

Welcome to the forum :bighug:

I would recommend going to Mormon.org first.

mormon.org is designed to help people investigating the church learn the basics about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The church's main site is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

I suggest mormon.org as your first stop, LDS.org after. This forum is packed full of threads discussing everything from current events to deep doctrine theology. The community here is lively at times, so don't be bashful. You have a forum full of people who will all trip over themselves to answer any questions you have. Welcome

Welcome to the site.

We are a Christian religion that believes in modern prophets. These prophets guide us as Moses guided ancient Israel. Our teachings are often different than that of most traditional Christian religions, as our prophets have sought to restore many of the ancient teachings of God.

While Judaism currently works without a functioning priesthood (instead it is rabbinical in its current form), we believe God restored his ancient priesthood that was held by Abraham and Moses. Through modern revelation, God has instituted an updated temple service for us. While we do not sacrifice animals, the symbolism within our modern temples represent the ancient concepts taught in the temple of Solomon - focusing on the fall of Adam and man's return to God's presence. As God sealed Adam's marriage (becoming one flesh), we also believe that in modern temples God can seal marriages for eternity.

Why prophets among the Gentiles? Because the ancient prophets foresaw the gospel light going to them. Abraham's covenant with God promised that it would extend to the Gentile nations. Isaiah and Jeremiah were called as prophets to the nations (Gentiles). In preparing for the end of days foreseen by Daniel, God cut a stone out of the mountain that is not the work of mankind. This stone grows ever bigger and will one day fill the earth. This is the work of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which like that stone, rolled forth after the fall of the many nations represented by the metal idol seen in Nebuchadnezzar's dream.

Isaiah foresaw this day, when an unlearned man would be given a sealed book, one which the learned could not read. In that day, Isaiah 29 tells us that a marvelous work and a wonder would come forth from God. We believe that sealed book is the Book of Mormon, and from the restoration of ancient things by God through modern prophets, we are seeing marvelous things come to pass today.

In Jeremiah 37, the prophet foresaw a day of resurrection in the valley of dry bones. It foresaw the literal resurrection, but also the gathering of Israel back into one people, who had been carried off and destroyed as a people. He also saw the day when the writings of Judah and Joseph would join together. We believe the writings of Judah are the Bible, and those of Joseph are found in the Book of Mormon.

As I said before, the Mormon belief is that God restored his ancient teachings, his ancient priesthood, and his ancient rites (in a modernized version) back to the earth, to prepare mankind for the end of days foreseen by Joel, Isaiah, Daniel and other prophets of old.

Welcome!

I converted from Judaism (Orthodox) and was baptized last month. I think you will find that it is just as Skippy said....there are many ties to Judaism within the LDS church. I was quite surprised by this. Just keep an open mind and heart and try to put aside any preconceived notions. Chances are they are wrong!

We do trip over ourselves to answer questions don't we? Lol. It's like we're all just chomping at the bit for a good question we can add our two cents on. Love the imagery here. When I read this, this picture popped in my head with the members of the forum stepping and tripping over each other like a stack of dominoes trying to be first to get to a keyboard.

Which is why I am very selective on the questions I answer. Also, I try to be fashionably late, in order to be the one who walks on top of everyone else. I look more regal and less clumsy that way....

Actually, you know what... That's kind of typical of me too. Sometimes I'll jump in right away, but I usually let the discussion go for a while before chiming in. I like to see it develop before adding in my own thoughts.

I envisioned what it would be like if there wasn't an online forum. Instead, a bunch of us sitting in my living room talking instead of posting. New member knocks and it turns into a big Mormon pile at the door.
