Family Celebrates Legacy of Ancestor Who Booked? Then Canceled?Passage on Titanic - Church News and Events

This week, people everywhere will remember the voyagers aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic, the ship that, on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City, United States, disastrously struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank early the next morning, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,500 of its passengers.

As the world marks the 100th anniversary of that tragic event, the descendants of Alma Sonne—a former assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles—will also remember the legacy of faith that their progenitor left behind in not being aboard the Titanic.

Let us not forget Church member Irene Corbett, who didn't cancel her passage on the Titanic and who went down with the ship (also mentioned in Elder Cook's November conference talk).

Incidentally, a couple of LDS missionaries were on the Vestris when it wrecked in 1928, and one of them died in that wreck.

There's a story that my great-grandparents had tickets for the lower decks on that voyage, but word from their sponsor here got delayed, so they had to make other plans. The timing is right- they left England in May 2012. But we don't have any proof that the story is true.

If they left in 2012 it probably isn't. ;):D

They call that a premonition.
