Ananias and Sapphira, Acts 4

This just seems out of place to me and I have never felt as if I understood it.

It appears that this couple had entered into a sacred covenant of consecration similar to the early latter-day Saints' efforts at a "united order". However, they held part of their gain back instead of following through with their covenant.

Please note that Peter did not kill these people; God did, directly, "striking them down" as it were. Perhaps this was a kindness to them; as covenant breakers, they had lost their reward of eternal life, so maybe in some way this "striking down" gave sufficient punishment and allowed them exaltation. I don't know that, just thinking out loud. But in any case, it should be a lesson to us that we take seriously our covenants with God, and that God does indeed know us and watch us.
