What Is The "atonement"?

What is the atonement... how do we get it... and how does it work... from your perspective?

What is the atonement... if it's not about Him becoming "at one" with our Father in heaven?

I explain my views fairly comprehensively in the thread "What does the phrase 'christ suffered for our sins' mean?"

You can review it here: http://www.ldstalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7779

I'll think some more about what you said there, but see what you think about this:

The atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ was accepted by our Father because that was our Father's will.

Anything less would not have satisfied His will... or His demands, the demands He demanded to grant mercy.

Thus, justice was satisfied, and mercy was granted, because the price our Father demanded was paid.

It all goes back to the council in heaven:

Here's the plan. Now who will do what I demand?

I pretty much agree with your last post Ray.

That's nice, but you still haven't told me what the atonement is.

What is it... how do we get it... and how does it work... from your perspective?

I read that thread. Can you summarize what you thought... or think now... in simple terms?

Okay. Then tell me if you agree with this summary.

The atonement simply refers to the will of our Father… and I’m referring to any Father who is God.

We get it by getting His will… or God’s will.

And it works because it is the will of our Father.

What He wills He will do… because He works, it’s His work.

There is nothing He wills to do He can’t do.

And to be “at one” with God means to be in agreement with God.

… it doesn’t mean we are or will become the same person.

And it doesn’t mean He wills to do what we will because we will it.

… we can do what God wills if God wills it.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we were all in agreement?

God is “one”, and God will always be “one”.

Why do some not want to be truly “at one” with God?

Who are they? Are they better than God?

Heh, I don’t think so. That’s why I worship (adore and emulate) who is God.

Any questions?

For me, the atonement refers to the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf.

It allows God to be a Just God in extending either mercy to the repentant, or justice to the unrepentant.

We receive the saving power of the atonement through faith, repentance, partaking of covenant-ordinances, and enduring to the end.

For me, becoming "at one" with God means sharing His Will and Desires in this life, and His presence in the next life.

So, you agree with me, huh? That's nice. I like it when that happens.

I was just going into more detail about what Jesus did when He did what He did on our behalf.

:)
