sixpacktr Posted May 7, 2007 Report Posted May 7, 2007 I have a question about the challenge President Hinckley extended to the church in Aug of 2005 to read the BOM entirely. Yesteday, during fast and testimony meeting, a woman stood up and talked about that challenge and how she had been blessed. I then remembered that one of the promises made to those that would read the BOM entirely during those 4 months was to be blessed. The funny thing is, I did that, and on Jan 12, 2006 I lost my job! And I was out of a job for 7.5 months! What kind of blessing is that?! I thought. But I realize that I was dying in that job. I was glad to get out of there, but wanted to do it more on my terms...Everything has worked out now (forget my credit cards though, that will take a while...), and I work at a fantastic company. The blessing took way longer than I wanted, and was much harsher than I imagined. So did anyone else receive blessings for following this counsel. I will say my relationship with my HF grew closer. I was able to serve much more in my Bishopric calling because I was available all the time and was able to help during some rough times in our ward. Anyway, just curious... Quote

I have felt the spirit of God. I believe God has something speicial for me to do, but I do not know what, but I know how you feel about your blessings. God works in mysterious and wonderful ways my friend. Quote
Vanilla Posted May 8, 2007 Report Posted May 8, 2007 I had been in-active on and off for many years but for some reason, in August I decided to take the challenge. I read most of 1st Nephi and then forgot about it. Every few weeks I remembered and would read a chapter here and there. On December 28th for some reason it became very important to me to finish even though my time was extremely limited. On New Year's Eve, I decided to cancel my plans and finish... I still had over 200 pages to go. I finished at 11:45pm and I had an immediate sense of peace. A little over a year later, I went through the Temple for the first time. Was I blessed? Without a doubt. Quote
Shade Posted May 8, 2007 Report Posted May 8, 2007 someone was speaking about this on Sunday, just past. i've never read the entire BOM. i wanna do it really soon. would it seem a little odd for it to be my new "bathroom book" for a few weeks until i complete it? Quote
Traveler Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Some random thought on this subject. My daughter (a young mom with young children) got hung up in daily task and was unable to finish the B of M during the time period. She felt quite badly and prayed and finished the B of M later. She received confirmation of her prayers asking for forgiveness - she felt forgiven. She asked for blessings for reading the B of M. Her prayers were answered and she received blessings for reading the B of M. But she also received confirmation that when the time had passed she had lost the blessings she would have received for being obedient. The L-rd still loved her and blessed her but not with the blessing that were promised to the faithful. Second thought: Is a blessing something the brings us closer to G-d? Then many blessings will appear more like "hardships" rather than spontaneous gifts. The Traveler Quote

LOL!PS: The blessings the Prophet promised have come ten fold and are wonderful!there was a brother in my ward growing up, i always looked up to him as an example of a good priesthood holder. he never tried to hide his mistakes but his efforts to be better were geniuine and never hidden either. one thing i recall most about him was visiting his house and when i used the restroom there was a book of mormon on the back of his toilet. when i asked (teased) him about it, he said he had one on the back every toilet he's ever owned since he joined the church (he had three bathrooms in that house, they all had one), said some of his best reading gets done in there. if that is where you read.....why not. wiley Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 We didn't get any specific blessing over here. I did what I was asked, and it made me feel good. That's all I really want anyways. It counterbalances the times when I don't do what I'm asked. It allows me to say, "Well, at least in this area, I was perfect." I guess that is why I like to pay tithing. It's one of those few and unique commandments that where we can actually measure how well we follow that commandment, and you can, at the end of the year, say you did so perfectly. But this is not a tithing thread. But like I said, no specific blessings. I'm happy enough that we have a roof and food on the table. ::Now if we could just combine the two....roof and table. That is, if we could just learn to eat at home more often. We go out to eat WAY to much. It makes my belly get bigger Quote
Mahonri Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 I finished it individually and also as a family. My that was a long time ago. August 2005? The Lord has truly blessed us... As I think back to 2006, some of the greatest blessings of my life occured that year. Quote
