Leah
Just did my taxes and am about to have a heart attack.I NEVER have owed money on Federal. EVER. But I just did my taxes and the software is showing me that I owe almost 3,000 dollars! I usually get about $1100 BACK!What gives? The ony thing I can figure is that employer screwed up royally on my withholding somehow. But I don't even claim myself during the year, so as to have them withhold the maximum amount. And, as I said, I always get back a sizeable refund. My hands are shaking.
Guest
I would take it to an accountant. Something has to be off.
skippy740
Have a live human being at H&R Block (or similar service) double check everything. You may even want to bring in the prior year's taxes for comparison.
Leah
Well.....after freaking out, I printed off some forms and did it by hand and came up with the usual refund. I even left off a possible deduction to make sure I was paying every penny possible. Then I took a deep breath and went back into the software. It seemed to not have accounted for any of the tax I had already paid. But the weird thing is that the gross pay on my W-2 is higher than the number you get by multiplying the hours worked by my hourly wage. I am loathe to ask the office manager about. She is wrong about things on a regular basis and will never admit to it.But at least I don't owe any money! Whew! Palerider
We usually owe the Feds and get a refund from the state.....that's what happens when all your dependents grow up. Lol
ACommonMan
I presume you figured out how to get the withholdings entered correctly. If not, let us know the brand and we'll see if someone knows how to guide you to the right screen. As for the amount descrepency, there are a few possibilities. For one, are there any entries in boxes 12 or 14? I've had some employers count their portion of health insurance as my income in boxes 1, 3, and 5; only to take it back out again in one of the box 12s. Your software should have processed that correctly if that's the case.Another possibility is that your pay period cycles were such that you got paid on both the first week of the year, as well as the last. (27 paychecks instead of 26) Money you earned in the last week of December counts on the next year's W2 if the check is printed in January.Lastly, you may have forgotten about overtime worked or a bonus paid. That neat pen and pencil set they gave you for Christmas counts as income if it was valued at more than $25.
Irishcolleen
Once we had to pay an unexpected amount because my husband got a raise that pushed us into a higher tax bracket.
