Started in the South. When the black nannies/housekeepers were around, the really young kids would call them "mama". The women would say "ain't your mama" which later became "Aunt Jemima". Hence, the black lady wearing the scarf on Aunt Jemima syrup...

True story? I don't know. I had heard that before, and it made sense.

I haven't heard it before....it's cool! how's it pronounced?

Jem-mime-ah - it was the name of one of Job's daughters. My husband did say it reminded him of syrup and had rascist connotations in the UK its vaguely posh

I love this name and whilst not pregnant again yet, my husband says this name is out in the US is it really that much out?

Charley

I think it's been out long enough it'd be brand new and cool!

It's a lovely name,

(I think perhaps even 10 years ago it would have had a racial undertone to it, but I think that's completely gone now.)

I'd give the name to my daughter if I wanted her to wear her hair in a bun and have a syrup named after her.

This is my image of a Jemima - I am now thinking of talking my husband into it if we have another girl - that and Matilda are my favourite names

I actually like the idea of busting a racial boundary

Charley Actually, when I think of the name Jemima, I think of a blond haired, blue eyed girl from the 70's hit movie: Escape from witch mountain.

And I like the name...you could call her Jem, for short!! Your special little Jem. :)

That's cute but "Gem" not Jem cause Jem is a terrorist organization or something like that.

I like Gem but love Mimi or Mima however Richard will veto that I should imagine he almost let me have Minerva until I mentioned a potential nn lol
