sixpacktr Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Here's my problem: We just bought a house, one that came with an inground pool. First time ever, my daughter and I love it, swim even when it is colder than a...well, you know. Anyway, I have this redwinged black bird that has taken a severe dislike to me. Don't know why, but she began dive bombing me the last 2 weeks when I was out cleaning the pool. This last Saturday, as we began swimming, she got more brazen and got closer and closer. Today, when I went outside and sat on my patio steps, she dived at me (BTW, she does leave a "present" as well, so this is becoming very, very irksome). Last night I decided it would be her last. So I got my trusty "Red Rider" BB gun I've had since I was a kid and had some target practice this morning. Kept her off balance for about 30 minutes, but she still wasn't driven off. I'm really not trying to kill this bird, but now I really don't care if I do or not. Any suggestions on how to get rid of her without killing her? Otherwise, my police neighbors (we live in a very close together subdivision) are gonna be woken up about 5:15 a.m. by the sound of a 12 gauge taking care of this problem! Thanks in advance... P.S. I've tried plastic owls and snakes in the past with other birds. All they did was make their nests right next to them!
BenRaines Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 I have taken down many a red winged black bird with a red ryder bb gun. Shoot for the head. No need for a shotgun. May need to upgrade to a pellet gun. Ben Raines

Guest Username-Removed Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Plastic owls are good of you can mount them where the thing starts its run. We had woodpeckers in the tall eave of our house. It seemed to work better than the shot gun. In the end, we used a little of both.
CrimsonKairos Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 I've had success with what are called "have-a-heart" traps. I was trying to catch a bunny who was helping itself to our fruit garden. One day I went out and there was a bird in it! I guess it wanted a carrot! Anyway, the trap is cool and once the bird is trapped it's like shooting...well...a bird in a barrel. Use different bait than a carrot, though...don't know why the bird I caught wanted to peck at it.Good luck.
sixpacktr Posted June 13, 2007 Author Report Posted June 13, 2007 Well, one down and two to go... I went out, and she attacked immediately, but "Red Rider" got a solid hit. She flew off, and I haven't seen her for an hour or so. Hate doing it that way, but I'm not that patient (probably another sin of mine that I have to work on!)
