andypg
So I was wondering about this, is Lehi considered a prophet or a patriarch? Who are the patriarchs of the Book of Mormon, if there are any?
Anddenex
Both, but how are you defining patriarch?
andypg
I'm thinking of patriarch in the biblical sense like Abraham.
Anddenex
Then yes, he would be considered a Patriarch also. He received promised blessings like unto Abraham and others for his seed, and also benefits from Abrahams covenant. I would say Yes. Although he wouldn't be referred to as such because his blessings don't bless all of us, only his posterity. In that case they would be different. skalenfehl
Lectures on Faith (especially the second lecture) gives us a clear understanding of the "tradition" that was passed down from father to son. This tradition was the "knowledge" of the existence of God, which was the "fullness of the gospel," which means receiving the "fullness of the priesthood." To "know" God implies a covenant relationship. This tradition was broken after the flood with Noah, but was reclaimed by Abraham, who was a contemporary of Shem (thought to be renamed Melchizedek by some as Jacob was renamed Israel), who lived long enough after the flood to be a part of Abraham's life. We read in the Book of Mormon of Lehi's theophany and thus the covenant relationship, which he had entered with the Lord, which is clearly indicated by the glimpses that we get into Lehi's life, especially in the first four chapters of Second Nephi, where he truly prophecied concerning things past and future, and also invoked covenant blessings upon his children.
