If you get crickets and you use a spinning wheel to force someone to make a comment, that's the same as putting somebody on the spot. That is not a good way to get audience participation. The spinning wheel is better applied in a scenario where the whole class wants to answer so instead of you having to pick a raised hand, you let the unbiased spinning wheel do it for you - this can be very helpful in Singing Time in Primary where everybody is jumping at the bit to get picked. So, if you tend to have crickets in your class, the best way to deal with that is to personally ask somebody days before Sunday if they can provide a personal story for the particular question. Then they have the option of saying No and you can go call somebody else. Then when the time comes for that audience participation you know who you're gonna call. Ghostbusters!
