Who is this man? 1 Ne 13:12

12 And I looked and beheld a man among the Gentiles, who was separated from the seed of my brethren by the many waters; and I beheld the Spirit of God, that it came down and wrought upon the man; and he went forth upon the many waters, even unto the seed of my brethren, who were in the promised land.

Do anyone know who this man is? Does anyone know of an on line source of information for the Book of Mormon that goes through the text verse by verse? There used to be a detailed commentary available online but I cannot find it.

Many thanks!

Edit: I found a manual that says this person is Christopher Columbus! How exciting!

Still hoping to find an online verse by verse manual.

Not online, but eBooks: https://deseretbook.com/p/verse-book-mormon-2-in-1-ebook-bundle-andrew-c-skinner-86288?ref=Grid | Search-9&variant_id=10012-ebook

I have the Old Testament version, but haven't had the time to use it.  It doesn't mention every single verse, but then not every verse needs something unique said about it.

It's absurdly expensive on Amazon, but they have a preview, so you can check it out, and if you like it, buy from DeseretBook... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009LNMO74/

Given Columbus’s mixed record on the treatment of the locals, some Church members have suggested that Bartolomé De Las Casas may be a better candidate.

Agreed! It is hard to believe that the Spirit would have anything to do with Columbus. We have a statue of Columbus in my town and buildings dedicated to him. Makes me a little queasy.

Something to consider is that Columbus could have been chosen. God knew how he would treat the locals. The reason Columbus could have been chosen is completely a guess, including the idea of him being chosen.

Further, think of Alma the Younger and the apostle Paul. Both people initially were against the church and committed nasty acts against it. Both of them changed their ways after an angel told them to stop. Paul even got a name change. He was called Saul before. I don't know if it was stated that they felt guilty for it. I believe Alma the Younger did, but I don't know about Paul. Either way, they probably did feel guilty; however, God chose them and forgave them for their actions, especially after they repented.

(Ooh, this could be good things to write questions about.)

In the end, we don't know what or why God did what He did if He chose them at all. The founding of America was inspired. The D&C says He put it into motion to form the country as it is today. The founding fathers of the country had slaves.

Bear in mind that whatever sins that were committed by Columbus and the founding fathers were theirs. God knew they would do those things yet chose them anyway. They would still pay for those sins, just like Alma the Younger and Paul even did.
