Marmonboy Posted September 13, 2007 Report Posted September 13, 2007 What is a Stake? What goes on at a Stake? Why is there tents at a Stake?A stake is a group of wards. The ward is the basic unit of the church, like a parish or congregation. Wards in a geographic unit are grouped for administrative purposes into a stake, which is comparable to a diocese in the Catholic Church. The term "stake" comes from a passage in Isaiah, where Zion is likened to a tent, and is encouraged to "strengthen her stakes". Quote

charity Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 But it does get confusing when you tell a non-member or investigator you had a meeting at the "stake house" and they think "steakhouse!" Quote

Shoofly Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Just be glad they decided to call them a "Stake" instead of an "Out."So if your area is not Tithing worthy do you meet in an In-n-Out instead of a Stakehouse? Quote

Guest AutumnBreez Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 What would be worse instead of a Steakhouse, it would be called a Outhouse. Let us all go outback to the Stakehouse tonight. Quote
poulsenll Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Interestingly, when I was a youngster, it was common practice in the Church to call them Stake Houses just as we now call Chapels meeting houses. As the Church expanded a concerted effort was made to change the practice to call them Stake Centers. I still catch myself calling it the Stake House instead of Stake Center. After all, we have dinners there and sometimes even serve steak. Larry P Quote

CourtneyP Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 Nope. Honestly it was called the Stake Center when I was active 10 years ago. And I was 18 at the time, which is certainly more than a twinkle in my dad's eye. Quote

It has been over 50 years since this was common usage in the church. This term has not been in common use for at least 30 years or longer.Larry P Quote
