MorningStar Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 What kind of eater are you? Do you pick a different food when you go to restaurants or do you eat your favorite every time? Are you a "compartment eater"? It drove this one guy I dated nuts because I would eat one food on my plate, then the next, then the next. I don't like to mix my foods. When I was a kid, I didn't like the applesauce touching my pork chops or my eggs touching my bacon. I've gotten a little more adventurous though. When I try a new restaurant, I have a hard time deciding what to order because I don't want to waste my money on something disgusting. I'll try something new the next time if I don't like it, but if I find something I love, I tend to order it every time (unless I know for sure I like all the ingredients in a different dish). Also, I tend to like to try out the quesadillas when I go to a new restaurant. Who here is familiar with Gandalfo's? I get the Manhattan Transfer every single time. I know some of the other sandwiches are probably good, but I love it so much, I can't imagine another one tasting better. On the rare occassions I go to McDonald's, I order the same thing because I don't have to ask for no mayo (hate mayo) or lettuce (can't stand warm lettuce). I can just order it and not have to ask for anything specific. I only like ketchup and mustard on burgers when it comes to condiments. I don't like going to Dairy Queen because I'm going to have to tell them "no special sauce" or whatever and most likely they will screw it up. Why food on the brain? Tonight my son's teachers are all working at McDonald's. That's a funny sight. I'm sitting here wondering if I'll order the usual or expand my horizons. Quote
MorningStar Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 Oh, I do have to congratulate myself on finally trying Thai food last year. That was a huge step for me. But I found a soup I like and I keep ordering it. I'm a wuss, so they gave me 0 stars last time. The deep fried vegies with plum sauce was interesting. I took a bite of my sister-in-law's green curry and it was good. It was good until the next time when I ordered my own plate and my mouth was on fire. I drank so much water, I had to use the bathroom three times while my husband and I were at Fred Meyer. We weren't even there that long. I can't even remember the name of the soup, but it has coconut milk, chicken, lemon grass, I think maybe some basil, and it's good served over rice. It's a sweet and sour soup of some kind. Yum! I try to stay away from the Olive Garden. The breadsticks are too darn addictive. I get salad and breadsticks and then I can't eat anything else. I heard the eggplant parmesan could induce labor, so I went there with my 3rd pregnancy and was able to eat exactly one bite of it. Probably not enough to do anything (if it really works, that is). Moksha Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 I can't even remember the name of the soup, but it has coconut milk, chicken, lemon grass, I think maybe some basil, and it's good served over rice. It's a sweet and sour soup of some kind. Yum! Was it Thai? Did the name sound something like Tom Kha Soup? Quote
MorningStar Posted January 29, 2008 Author Report Posted January 29, 2008 I looked it up. It was Tom Kha Gai. So good! Quote
Alaskagain Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 Wow, Food. I can talk about Food. Yum. Ordering in a restaurant, I will try some new dish I have never had before, a little adventurous in that way . . . but on the first visit to a new restaurant, I have to order cheesecake for dessert, especially if it is made on premises. I am on a quest to find the best cheesecake. I have eaten cheesecake in about 15 different states, I don't have any idea how many different restaurants. The best so far (it's a tie): a small cafe at Lake of the Ozarks (made on premises by the chef) ; and Stony River (but their's is not made on site). I have gained five pounds just thinking about it. Guest AutumnBreez Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 I am not a compartment eater....however the way I like to mix my bites, I am particular if the items compliment each other. Like I would not eat ketchup with pancakes and syrup- ketchup is for fries and hamburgers. I had a sister in law that liked ketchup with her pancakes= Ugh! I like to eat fresh fruits and veggies. I prefer fruit over veggies. I love young thai coconut water. I love most all food, though I am not fond of fishy-fishy foods though. I don't do raw fish. Salmon, tuna, they are good with lots of lemon is fine. Shrimp is ok but not my fav. King snow crab better. I don't like to waste either when ordering out. I got this paninni at panera and it had some basil sauce that overwelmed the sandwich, I was bit disgusted. Found out then that I am not a fan of basil, too much. My friend likes turkey bravo so I tried it and it was good, so I get that if I get a sandwich after my last experience. I love the chicken Asian salad at Panera bread. Quote

I think I made up a word. Quote
MorningStar Posted January 29, 2008 Author Report Posted January 29, 2008 Autumn, I loooooooove basil. Mmmmm ..... I like Caprese salad where you layer slices of fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil leaves. I've done some variations where I chop it all up, julienne the basil, add a little red onion, freshly ground pepper, gorgonzola cheese, and a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It's so good! Quote
MorningStar Posted January 29, 2008 Author Report Posted January 29, 2008 Word to the wise: Don't ever order the Alfredo sauce for dipping the breadsticks when you go to the Olive Garden. You will never be able to eat them plain again and it will probably bring you one step closer to your death. A delicious death, but you know it's death and that's no fun. Quote
Annabelli Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 There's one little restaurant in town that serves a very good skillet breakfast. The rest of their food stinks. So I only go there for breakfast. I order water because their oj is the worst and the milk comes in a warm carton. I went there with some co-workers for lunch once and all I could think was "who could screw up a burger?" Went there for dinner once because after the storm, the power on our side of town was off for hours. It was baked but was it really chicken? Of course not, it was a pork chop. I know because the waitress ran over and got it and brought me the baked chicken that she served to someone else. They had sliced the chicken so you know that they probably ate some of the sides too. I haven't had one of their skillets since 1997. Well, I shouldn't say all their food is bad because I do go there for dinner sometimes. They make the best pork chops in town. Quote
Guest AutumnBreez Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 I have not been there in a long time. It is a way from my home, probably best, I love the salad and breadsticks too! I could go there just for that and be satisfied. I was thinking about it the other day before you brought it up, think I will make a special trip when I get some extra money. Any donations????I'm tapped right now. , I need Olive Garden something bad!!!! Quote
MorningStar Posted January 29, 2008 Author Report Posted January 29, 2008 Autumn, if I strike it rich, I'll take you there myself! Quote
beakers Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 All this talk about the Olive Garden is making me hungry! I know it's cliche, but my favorite food is pizza. There are so many variations. I think the best pizza I ever had was in Albuquerque, NM in a little pizzaria downtown. Wow was it good! I like trying pizza in all the places I travel. I also like to try chocolate mousse, which isn't as easy to find as pizza. Best chocolate mousse I've had so far was in a Brazilian restuarant in Las Vegas, NV. I love Mexican food. I've lived in California my entire life and I've never craved Mexican food so much as I did while living in Maine for 5 months. I guess I took good Mexican food for granted! I've also been searching for the worst Mexican food in the United States. A resturant in Fargo, ND is winning at this point. I could talk about food all day! What a great post topic!!!!!! Quote

What a great post topic!!!!!!Do you like BBQ chicken pizza? I love it. My son loves it now too. It took a while to convert my parents to the ways of pizza with chicken on it.Ooooooh, chocolate mousse. Good stuff. There's this place in town that serves this hot chocolate souffle in a mug and it has melted chocolate in the middle with white chocolate ice cream on top. They serve it with one of those straw cookie whatchamacallits and a sprig of mint. It is really, really rich. Last time I asked for some milk to go with it for when my ice cream ran out. I always share it with a friend because it's so rich. They also have a really good creme brulee. My favorite restaurant closed and they had this appetizer called focaccia con cambozola. It's a flat bread that you spread roasted garlic and cambozola cheese on. I try to recreate it myself, but it's not the same.My sister is trying to get me to try the baked brie at this restaurant called The Purple Cafe. I've had raw brie, but that was when I was in the first trimester of my first pregnancy. It didn't go so well. Quote

Pizza with shrimp is really good too! That chocolate souffle sounds delicious!Take some brie or goat cheese and spread on apple slices. What a great fast snack! Why is it that nothing is ever as good when we try and make it at home as opposed to eating at a restaurant? Or even when someone else makes it for us? A friend of mine made these delicious lemon cookies. They were sooooo good and moist. I got the recipe and tried them myself and they just weren't as delicious. I'm usually a pretty good baker and the recipe was super simple. But the cookies were sadly lacking. Sigh. Quote
MorningStar Posted January 30, 2008 Author Report Posted January 30, 2008 Oh! The ones with the lemon cake mix??? I love those! I think the trick is cooking them for a little less than you expect to. Ooooh ... Pizza with shrimp. I had a Thai pizza with shrimp on it. Not that that's authentic Thai food. Quote

I found a similar recipe the other day for chocolate cookies made with cake mix. I can't wait to try those. I think I actually managed to under cook them...Wow, how did you manage to make me crave Thai food at 10:00 in the morning? Quote
MorningStar Posted January 30, 2008 Author Report Posted January 30, 2008 Is it the homemade oreo recipe with the devil's food cake and the frosting in the middle? Those are grub. You can eat Thai food anytime you want to. Quote
beakers Posted January 30, 2008 Report Posted January 30, 2008 Those sound good, like a whoopie pie. These are pretty much the same as the lemon cookies only with chocolate cake mix instead of lemon cake mix. You're right about the Thai food. I could use some green curry chicken right about now! Quote
MorningStar Posted January 30, 2008 Author Report Posted January 30, 2008 I need a gallon of ice water for that stuff. Quote
pushka Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 Being a vegetarian, most restaurants don't have much choice for me...I have visited some good Veggie restaurants too though, that have a large selection of goodies. I love pasta and white wine/mushroom sauce..anything that tastes like a chicken, ie. Quorn pieces/fillets, and cheese dishes..I have got so fed up of being offered Meditteranean Veg dishes, in tomato sauce! Yuk!! I hate peppers, courgettes and aubergines!! I cooked a buffet (of frozen foods, lol!) yesterday, for my small family and 2 missionaries, so I chose a selection of Oriental Fish dishes, Indian snacks, mini pizzas and typical English stuff like pork pies and sweet stuff...the missionaries seemed to enjoy the mini pizzas and BBQ chicken drumsticks the most...it was amazing talking about what foodstuffs we have here that aren't available in the USA, or that are called different names altogether..for instance, we drink fruit cordial mixed with water, and the American missionary said they don't have cordials in the USA, also custard was called something else, I think...we also got round to the discussion of the USA's lack of Boxing Day, Christmas Crackers and other stuff too...amazing!! :) Quote
