Jenamarie Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Family Grain Mill is having a deal where if you buy their wheat grinder with the motorized base, you get the hand-crank base for free! So you're getting both an electric AND hand-cranked wheat grinder for the price of one! They also have a "flaker" attachment that allows you to make your own oatmeal!Every store I saw online that sells the mills has this deal going on, but https://www.pleasanthillgrain.com was the cheapest I found, and you get free shipping! meredith14 Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 I have this grain mill and use the flaker more then anything else. A couple of years ago my husband did the homework and math on this grain mill and found it to be the best value out there. So we got it and have used it a ton. Quote
Jenamarie Posted April 22, 2008 Author Report Posted April 22, 2008 What do you use the flaker for? Is there more you can make with it, besides just oatmeal? Quote
Abraham Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 You can roll oats but if you make, like my wife does, 12 grain bread sometimes you have to roll other grains and crack them for use in the bread or cereals. I don't know about this grinder but it sounds like a great deal personally like the Nuti Mill, as it has a pre-burst chamber that allows you tp put 10 cups in the top without having to turn it on. It works great but costs about $250. Be careful of hand grinders also. Do your homework. I can' recall the name of ours but it has an adapter that is about 12" in diameter and multiplies the turns. If you go to Walton Feed site (as I have said before) you can get a comparison on how long, how much, etc. it takes to grind wheat into flour. REMEMBER it will take a lot of effort, you just want to minmize it. Abraham Quote
Jenamarie Posted April 22, 2008 Author Report Posted April 22, 2008 I checked out WaltonFeed before purchassing the grinder. :) This was the second-best hand grinder they reviewed (the top one was waaaaay out of my budget ) Quote
meredith14 Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Like Abraham's wife (see note above) I use it for any grain, except corn. Corn is to hard to put into it. I like to crack corn and then put it in again to make a fine masa. I have put flax seed into my grinder too. LOVE MY GRINDER!!! Quote
Abraham Posted April 23, 2008 Report Posted April 23, 2008 I am not sure what you wanted to put corn into, but most good grinders can grind popcorn into great cornmeal, and it is veyr cheap compared to what a grocery store charges. Get the recipe for Marie Callendars corn bread it is to die for, and like a cake. Just be sure your grinder insturctions says its okay so you don't ruin your grinder and blame me. hee hee Abraham Quote
Jenamarie Posted April 23, 2008 Author Report Posted April 23, 2008 This mill does have a warning against putting popcorn into it, unfortunately. Oh well! Quote
ruthiechan Posted April 23, 2008 Report Posted April 23, 2008 Is this the one you are talking about? https://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/index.aspx#Nutrimill Quote
Jenamarie Posted April 24, 2008 Author Report Posted April 24, 2008 No, this is the one that has the deal going on:Scroll down the page a bit, below the nutrimill. Quote
meredith14 Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Popcorn, I buy whole dried corn to make corn meal out of, but to my knowledge you can't put popcorn in a grinder. It will break the grinder. Quote
