The money that is invested by the government in a family didn't come out of thin air. Somebody else worked to earn that money, the government took it and redistributed it. You may not like how that sounds, but it is the simple truth. I believe in helping those who would help themselves if they could, but can't. Often times people are a products of bad choices in life and end up on the dole and often times people are forced their due to circumstances beyond their control. I am all for lending a helping hand, but we don't need a nanny state. The biggest obstacle to prosperity is our government. Our corporate tax rate is the second highest in the world. Get rid of the tax and the economy blooms and people get job and generations prosper as a result.

The DOW was over 14,000 in October of 2007. So when you say the last few years you are obviously referring to the last year. True, the downward spiral was painful for many, particularly those who just let it ride and didn't seek advice. That being said, there are relatively stable investments and strategies that would serve the need for stability with Social Security assets. As far as the idiot that wants to see how fast they can make the DOW fall, I am not sure exactly what you mean. Recessions come and go and so to do Bear markets and frankly this market downturn was not nearly as bad as some on the past. I manage money for a living and while it looks bad now, the market will recover and advance and if you invest and are properly diversified you will be happy. If you are uncertain, seek some advice. Allowing younger Americans to invest all or a portion of their SS tax in a self directed IRA with some limitations would be so much better than the system we have today. If you or most Americans truly understood the big ripoff SS was it would make you bonkers.

As compared to what? I am sure it is not a pleasant experience. Isn't Khalid Sheikh Mohammed the creep who admitted to beheading Daniel Pearl? I am all for extreme interrogation methods if it will save American lives or innocent lives abroad.

Social security is broken, this is a point that is generally agreed upon by both parties. My problem with social security is that #1, we are forced to pay into it, yet have very little control over the distribution rate. #2. The return on this forced "tax" for retirement is almost nothing. Why not allow "younger" people different options with their retirement savings? Either by opting out of the program all together or allowing the contributions to be invested. #3 Loss of assets at death. What a big scam, and it really amounts to nothing more than a gigantic death tax. Everything is so politicized. We could do so much better for our future retirees if we would address the issue NOW. Too bad, politicians would rather have it as an issue or a scare tactic to keep seniors voting a certain way.

So true....of course that has absolutely nothing to do with the article, but thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Government and service....now their is an oxymoron. But seriously, what services??

I don't know...maybe some are waking up. But Obama has poured some mighty tasty kool-aid. Honestly for those who hated Bush, Obama is governing a lot like him. Bush was a big spending liberal, Obama is just Bush on steroids and for all of Obama's rhetoric about change, he is behaving a lot like Bush. Americans need to wake up and dump the kool-aid from both parties before we live in a banana republic.

Hardly sounds like torture to me. Obama is a fool and will make our country less safe.

Moksha, I typically love your comments, but, do you honestly believe that all of those people are protesting against higher taxes for the so-called "wealthy"? Not everyone feels all warm and fuzzy when the government announces bailouts, stimulus bills and pork laden spending bills that have the potential of crippling our nation financially. The protests are about WASTE.......out of control waste of tax payer dollars. Seriously, taxes are not being cut , in fact taxes are going to increase on everyone....including you my Penguin friend in 2010 when the Bush tax cuts expire. Nearly 40% of the alleged tax cuts are being paid to individuals that do not earn enough to pay federal income taxes. That means that much of his alleged cut, which is really a rebate, as opposed to a cut, is nothing more than income redistribution.

The techniques themselves were used selectively against only a small number of hard-core prisoners who successfully resisted other forms of interrogation, and then only with the explicit authorization of the director of the CIA. Of the thousands of unlawful combatants captured by the U.S., fewer than 100 were detained and questioned in the CIA program. Of those, fewer than one-third were subjected to any of the techniques discussed in these opinions. As already disclosed by Director Hayden, as late as 2006, even with the growing success of other intelligence tools, fully half of the government's knowledge about the structure and activities of al Qaeda came from those interrogations. Well sort of......but if we are in reality talking about a University commencement, I have to believe that a sitting President would make a bigger impact on the graduating class. Particularly, Obama. for all my dislike of his disastrous fiscal policies, he has a remarkable story.......from community organizer to President of the United States and he is only 48.

The economy will and would have recovered without the massive government spending. I am not referring to TARP only, but the ridiculous "emergency" stimulus bill and the omnibus bill. That is the reason people are protesting. As far as "Obama is doing a good job".......if you are for massive government spending, deficits that will likely lead to inflation, higher taxes and debt that our great grandchildren will be dealing with and the fact that for all the promised "change" he is behaving remarkably like Bush did, then , yeah, I can see how you think that.....http://www.lds.net/forums/current-events/20415-obama-just-like-bush.html -
Hey Elph.......what flavor is that kool-aid:D Must be mighty tasty!!

Amidst all of the American flags and presidential seals, there was something missing when President Barack Obama gave an economic speech at Georgetown University this week -- Jesus......read more here..

Off subject a bit.......I am against a Nationalized Healthcare program, mainly because I believe the government will ruin the quality of health care that we receive. That being said, I am appalled that some people suffer terribly because they can't afford treatment or surgery for serious, life threatening illness when our government wastes billions of our tax dollars and funnels money in the form of foreign aid.

Off subject...do you live in Colorado Springs? I love Colorado Springs and hope to move their in the not to distant future. My wife and I have visited the Northgate Ward and hope to move to the Pine creek area.

What we have that makes us believe is the Holy Spirit. Without it I would not believe. That is the honest answer....no dancing around here. Until you have received a witness of the truth from the Spirit, you will not understand, but, take it or leave it, that is the answer.

Some, including myself have responded to your tone. You might re-read your posts and consider if you might be somewhat responsible for some of the sarcastic replies. Also, you conveniently ignore offered evidences and counters to your Biblical claims and site no scripture or source for any of your concerns, questions or counters. Perhaps, if you changed your tone and did some of these things, we could have a more productive discussion. Many of your claims regarding "traditional" Christianity are incorrect, yet you still continue. Many of your assertions about what we believe are incorrect or at least misunderstandings and frankly some of your comments regarding Joseph Smith and our beliefs are insulting. If you are looking for Nephites and Lamanites, we may only be able to point you to cultures that may have been associated with them. Just as, if you need to see the Ark of the Covenant to believe that it existed or view Noah's Ark first hand, well, you may be out of luck. Do you pray? If yes, why? Do you receive answers to your prayers? If not, why do you pray? Do you think prayer is necessary? How do you believe that God reveals himself and his eternal truths to mankind? In the form of the Biblical canon only or is he more personal than that? After all we are his children and the scriptures are full of evidence that we are indeed his children in the literal sense.

Unless I am mistaken.....MOE is suggesting a bracketed flat tax? Which I would be ok with.
