  1. I think many teachers would probably be happy to have parents help cover this section, since the text doesn't provide very much information- as long as they aren't worried you're going to try to "convert" all their students, as treating it as an opportunity to preach would go against public school policies and could get them in trouble. And, of course, if they have the time to cover it in more detail without falling behind on what they are required to cover.

I think as long as it uses the past tense and is as much about the social aspects as anything then it'd be alright.

  2. I've done a lot of customer service, on the phone and otherwise. My phrase was, "Sir, I'd like to help you, but if you continue to yell and call me names, I will end the call." One warning, then follow through. You're not obligated to take verbal abuse just because he's a volunteer.

Unfortunately, where I work that wouldn't fly.

I completely agree that customer service should be courteous, but there tends to be an elementary lack of respect by the callers themselves.

  3. The replies on this thread remind me of that one song - we didn't start the fire.

So the replies reminded you of people trying to change the world for the better even though they didn't cause all of the problems? Awesome. I wish I could say the same about your posts here.

  4. War for the good causes = good. War for the bad causes = bad.

Just think, this country had a revolution simply because some businessmen did not want to pay a TAX to the king in England.

I think that the struggle to gain your own sovereignty is not quite the same thing as invading another country to confiscate money for taxes.

The south went to war to keep their slave workers.

You want to go to war to take money.

Can't we have a war for the good causes?

Why are you so keen on starting wars? Wars should be avoided at all costs, especially when they involve unprovoked attacks on other countries.

Keeping American made money here in the U.S.?

Is worth a war that wil lend up costing far higher?

I've been creating videos to put on youtube trying to get people to unite. I was doing research on the towns in south western Indiana and discovered one plastic company is owned by a Saudi Arabian company. There's a factory about six minutes away from me and they were just bought out by people in the middle east, I do believe Saudi Arabia.

There are USA owned businesses the world over. The Israeli factory my dad worked in was sold to Rumania. Nobody went to war over it.

And then there is the factory seven minutes away from me and they fired many of their long time workers so they would not have pay their pensions and replaced them with low paying temp workers.

It has happened to me, I'm still a pacifist.

If I were Dr. Frankenstein I would create the perfect beast - a mix between Jimmy Hoffa and Curtis Lemay.

Are you sure it isn't a rebranded Buck Turgidson?

  5. :::SIGH:::...What to do with culinary fundamentalists???

I dunno, but we burn heretics at the stake. That is the only stake that we do burn.

Anyway, most may not, but the Pentecostal kinds do! :P

What I mean is that you can't call it a meat pie when meat isn't an integral element, and you've made me hungry now.

On my mission we were travelling back one day, had been on the bust for a while. During the stop I saw an old lady selling pirozhki. The pirozhok she had out was large and appetising (cabbage filling of course) so I gave her the money and she handed me a miniscule one. 'What about that,' I asked, pointing to the large one.

'Oh, that, just a display model.'

  6. I can't believe I'm a firster to respond!

My son just returned from Ukraine (Russian speaking) and he's fairly fluent. But then, I don't think I ever really understood him. If you don't believe me, just ask him!

    Which mission?

I've been to Ukraine (kudos for not using the definitive article!) several times, and have extended family there.

I served in southern Russia, one of the cities was only a couple of hours on foot from the border.

  7. Has any cherub in scripture ever been specifically identified to a known individual? I submit that in the same scripture where a "covering" cherub is specifically identified that the individual is also identified as "anointed" - which in Hebrew is translated into English as "Messiah" or “Christ” from the Greek.

Are you saying that the king of Tyre is Jesus?

And - BTW while we are on "Very elementary stuff" -- "the cherubs"? is not cherub singular and the plural cherubim -- what is "cherubs"?

    See Vort's reply.

  8. guess again the Hebrew is הכרובים

Ha. Haha. Hahahahaha. Are you serious? הכרובים (hacherubim) means "the cherubs." The prefix ה (ha) is the definitive article and the suffix ים (im) is the masculine plural form. Very elementary stuff.

of which there is no modern translation. The Greek was used directly in scripture without any English Translation. In Greek mythology Cupid (Eros) is among the most famous cherub and was a g-d (deity) not and angel.

You keep saying this. I wish you would actually back it up with evidence.

I would also point out that the original Hebrew that identified Cherubim in Eden preceded the Greek. But the main point is that the Greek Cherubim was a class of g-d and was not changed to be a type of angel until sometime during the dark ages.

    The Traveler

So you do concede that it wasn't originally a Greek word.

  9. All three gospels (Matthew, Mark & Luke) show someone calling Jesus "Son of David" in these scenes where Jesus is healing someone (whether physical or exorcism). The question would be what is the significance of Jesus being called "Son of David"? What did the people asking for healing mean when they called Jesus "Son of David"? The NET Bible's note (a Josephus text) suggests that the people thought of Jesus as a type of Solomon, since Solomon had the power to heal. The problem with using the Josephus text is that, no where in the text does it say that Solomon is known as "Son of David". The NET Bible possibly came to that conclusion since in other texts/manuscripts (like Proverbs 1:1) these descriptions are together. But are Solomon and Son of David, appositions? Does Son of David explain or modify the name Solomon, so that when we read the words "Son of David" is it safe to say that means Solomon? I don't think a person can come to a firm conclusion that Son of David always means Solomon (or a type of Solomon) based on the Josephus text. And I doubt that the term Son of David was pointing to a genelogical meaning.

    M.

In the texts where Solomon is refered to as son of David, it is never alone and never used a title. It is an additional description, an identifier of Solomon. Accuracy was crucial in ancient magic.

Nor do the gospels depict Jesus as employing any Solomonic methods for healings/excorcisms.

When Son of David is used alone, especially at such a remove from the historical David, it usually refers to the Messiah. His reign would provide miraculous healings.

  10. What is the significance of understanding it that way? Does it matter to our gospel whether Christ is a literal descendant of David or a "euphemistic" descendant of David, as in the way a lot of us are adopted into Abraham's lineage?

In other words, what is the difference between someone who is a literal descendant of the house of Israel versus an adopted descendant in the grand scheme of things? Does not the "adopted" son have a a right to the throne as well? Will the designation of literal (genetic link) versus adopted have some eternal significance?

I'm not sure you understood what I was saying. Maureen provided a source claiming that the title "Son of David" was applied to Solomon-like healers and excorcists. I pointed out that the evidence doesn't support this reading.
