  1. It started with Eve Online. You can pay for the monthly subscription using in game money so it costs me zero real dollars to play. There are lotteries and poker games where you can bet and win in game money too. Gambling in game is 100% free in terms of real world money. There are other ways to gamble as well, like you can bet on who will win the yearly alliance tournament.
  2. It's a lot easier to make yourself unattractive to men than it is to make yourself attractive. If you're clingy, jealous, or controlling it won't matter how hot you are, you're going to have a hard time. If you're generous, loving, and secure then it won't matter how big you are, you'll find someone. Make it a point to be very active with a charity. Take it seriously and put a lot of effort into it. You'll find a man in no time. It's also a great filter. If a guy isn't interested in a wonderful woman that's a little overweight then he's not worth your time anyway. It also makes a big difference if the weight problem is medical or voluntary. A woman who is overweight because she is insecure or lacks self control is going to have a hard time finding a man because those personality flaws are detrimental to keeping a family together. By the time your kids are teenagers, if you're insecure, controlling, jealous, clingy, or lack self control then you're going to have a very hard time being a parent.
  3. This is the interesting quote. It would seem that we're being told that breaking a commandment in a game should be avoided just as we would avoid it in real life. The problem is that in many games, the point is to kill other people. Even though it is a game, the situation presented in the games can be very different. In Eve Online, I can kill other pilots. Pilots sit in a pod that sits in a ship. I can kill their ship to expose their pod, then kill their pod. When that happens their mind is transferred to a clone and they get a new body. Is this a violation of the "Thou shalt not kill" commandment? After I blow up their ship I can take what's in their cargo. Does that violate the no stealing commandment? In Battlefield, I can kill enemy soldiers. After they die they respawn like nothing ever happened. After they're dead I can steal their equipment. Is this a violation of the commandments as well? In Grand Theft Auto I can steal cars, shoot innocent bystanders, run over people with my car, and have sex with prostitutes. Does this violate commandments in the exact same way as with Eve Online and Battlefield? If so then why do we see Grand Theft Auto as a very non-Mormon game while Eve and Battlefield are played by many members? Quick side note, I don't see the connection between Monopoly and gambling. Monopoly attempts to simulate business where you buy and sell things. There isn't a way to bet money to win more money in it. Anyway, I was just looking for opinions on the matter, since virtual worlds hasn't been covered much by the church yet.
  4. I play an online game that has imaginary money in it. Anyone care to share their thoughts about gambling with imaginary online money that cannot be converted to real money? For example, lotteries and poker games.
  5. If it is said that God cannot do something, it is not always meant literally. For God's plan to work, there are things that he must do and things he cannot do. Sure, he could do them if he wanted, but he can't if His plan is to work.
  6. Ah yeah you got me. I use a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router with a built in firewall. It's kinda old and needs an upgrade, but I'm waiting till the new wireless n standard becomes a little more common place.
  7. I'm the I.T. department at work and keeping a computer safe is really pretty simple. I use this setup and my home computers survived 4 years infection free with my 4 kids and their friends using them. Didn't cost a dime to set up either. My work computers have a more complex setup but I won't go into that here because it costs money. Use Firefox instead of IE. I have nothing against IE but you can't use the following addons with it. Firefox web browser | Faster, more secure, & customizable Get the adblock plus and flashblock addons for Firefox. Adblock Plus: Save your time and traffic mozdev.org - flashblock: index Flashblock will block any flash on websites. Just click the arrow in the middle to make it run. Right click the arrow to tell it to always allow flash from the site you're on. Use avira free antivirus. In the last round of antivirus testing the two top programs were Avira and NOD32. NOD32 costs money but it's really good. AVG scores very low and is pretty useless for anything. Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir That's it. The only thing left is learning basic internet safety. Things like, when a window pops up and tells you that you have an infection and you really NEED to install their program, don't do it. You're already protected. Don't install anything you don't actually really need. Don't install "free" games from a website. Either buy a $10 cd of 1,000 games at walmart or play flash games that appear in the browser window. Your best bet is find a geek that's good with security and talk to them. Anyone who has to take care of computers as their job is good.
  8. You are correct that tea is tea but the important thing is to remember that just because someone calls a drink by the wrong name doesn't mean you can't drink it. It's unfortunate that tea is never labled just "tea" but by color according to how the tea plant is handled because it can lead to confusion if you don't understand that it's all just tea. Tea is bad. Infusions and tisane aren't. Sure it's a matter of personal choice what you consume and what you don't, but Bigelow Lemon Tea isn't against the WoW even though calling it tea is a misnomer. If it is then lemonade has to be as well.
  9. There is only one plant in the world that is called Tea. All tea is made from that plant. Joseph Smith and others have said to not drink tea. Are you seriously having difficulty figuring out what they meant? Sounds like you've got something to pray about, Margin. I've done my research. I've spoken to my bishop and my stake president who is also a neurologist who helped my wife figure out that "tea" was causing her migraines. The pain she was in was not trivial, and not even narcotic painkillers would make it go away. No doctor could diagnose the cause. It wasn't until I decided to come back to the church and began discussing the WoW with the missionaries that all of this came about. She is now pain free, thanks to the WoW. No other tisane has caused her to have migraines either. We regularly enjoy Red Chai with Rooibos and honey. If that's not enough for you then you need to talk to someone else about it. Your Bishop, Stake President, or even Heavenly Father should do.
  10. I believe the whole point of the phrase "sunday best" is to tell us that we need to take His religion seriously, that when we walk into His church we're doing so with as much reverence and respect as we can. My daughter asked me this question too. I asked her if she would consider wearing an expensive pants suit when she got married. Her answer would probably match yours. :) My wife gets all her sunday clothes at Goodwill and other thrift shops and she is regularly complimented on how nice she looks. It's a lot more work finding nice clothes at thrift shops but the price is worth it. Maybe give that a try?
  11. You're arguing semantics now. If you don't care about definitions then it will be impossible for you to understand the instructions we have been given. Because the use of the word "tea" has been convoluted in modern english you must understand what the words actually mean, since you will not get the actual meanings from regular conversational english. There is only one plant called a tea plant. All tea is made from that plant. Tea is the common name for the plant. The scientific name is Camellia sinensis. When you look at a list of ingredients, you rarely will see just the word "tea" by itself, nor will you see the actual name Camellia sinensis. What you will usually see are the four main types of tea: black tea, green tea, white tea, and oolong tea. It doesn't matter whether you use the term "tea", "Camellia Sinensis", "black tea", or "green tea", they are all the same thing. When I listed the four main types of tea my intention was to help others identify tea in a list of ingredients. Rarely will ingredients say just "tea" and rarely will they use the scientific name. -The Word of Wisdom: A Modern Interpretation (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1937) -Doctrine & Covenants, Student Manual (Institute), p. 207 It has been made very clear that we should not consume drinks made with tea. Just because some people call a drink by the wrong word does not mean there is any confusion in what the prophets have told us. "Can I get a coke?" "Sure, what kind?" "I'll have a Sprite." So if the Prophet said coke was against the WoW, would you then argue that we also couldn't drink sprite?
  12. I dated an english major for 3 years. She would correct my love notes and give them back, no joke. On the positive side I learned more about english from her than I did from school so I guess it worked out in my favor in the end.
  13. I just want to know if it's still okay to laugh at people who see the image of Jesus in a cheeto.
  14. ...and people say an english degree is useless..... Red tea is the confusing one because it refers to different things depending on where in the world you are. Some areas of Asia refer to black tea as red tea. You just have to look at the ingredients to see whether it's actual tea or some other plant like rooibos.
  15. What people are getting tripped up on are definitions here. Tea is defined as a drink made by boiling the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. If it's not made from that plant then it is not tea. The term "herbal tea" is a misnomer. The actual name for drinks made from plants other than Camellia sinensis is "tisane", or "ptisan." Calling those drinks "herbal tea" is incorrect because they are not tea. We just use that term because it's convenient and very few people know about the word "tisane." We have been told, and it has been covered in Ensign and other places, that we shouldn't drink "tea" but other drinks like "herbal teas" are acceptable. They could have used the word "tisane" but nobody would know what they were talking about. D&C 89: 10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man— 11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving. This scripture tells us that "herbal teas" are good for us, as long as the plant is wholesome. I imagine hemlock or foxglove would probably not be considered wholesome. The WoW is actually pretty clear and specific about what you can consume and what you can't. The problem isn't with interpreting what the Prophet has told us, but with understanding definitions in the english language.
  16. Believe me, I've done a lot of research on this because my wife suffers from horrible migraines and chai made from black tea was one of the few things we found that would make the headaches go away. Coffee was another one that worked but it was too upsetting to her stomach. We originally thought it was a caffeine addiction but other drinks with caffeine had no effect. We had some pretty serious issues about giving it up. The authorities have been pretty specific about which teas are bad and which ones are okay to drink. Herbal teas are regularly used by members. If you want to avoid anything with the word "tea" in it you can, but it's not what the WoW asks us to do. We need to make clear distinctions between what we choose for ourselves and what the church asks of us. Chai only refers to the spices used. You can put the same spices in milk and have chai milk, or make chai ice cream or chai jello or chai whatever. Traditional chai tea is made from black tea which is against the WoW but that doesn't mean all chai tea is against the WoW. You could make a perfectly acceptable herbal tea and put chai spices in it and have chai tea that even the Prophet could drink. Any other plant besides camellia sinensis that is boiled in water is referred to as herbal tea which has been stated by the church authorities as not against the WoW. Bigelow Lemon tea: Rose Hips, Lemon Grass, Natural Lemon Flavor, Lemon Peel, Lemon Verbena, Peppermint Leaves, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Hibiscus Flowers, Citric Acid. Does not break the WoW. Bigelow cinnamon tea: black tea, cinnamon. Does break the Wow. As it turned out, something in coffee and black tea was causing her migraines. Our stake president happens to be a neurologist and helped us figure it out. We slowly reduced her intake of tazo chai and replaced it with rooibos chai and her migraines have pretty much dissapeared. There is definately something in camellia sinensis that is bad for us which is probably why the WoW refers to tea made from that plant.
  17. Only black, green, white, and oolong teas are covered by the WoW. They are made from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant. The level of oxidation and what part of the plant that is used is what makes them different. Black tea is more heavily oxidized than green and white. Herbal tea is defined as any tea not made with camellia sinensis. Tea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Rooibos tea is made from a completely different plant so it doesn't break the WoW, just like chamomile and rosehip tea are made from different plants and also do not break the WoW.
  18. If you don't want people seeing every juicy detail in your facebook then secure it with the privacy settings. Put your friends in two groups, one with people you don't mind seeing everything and one that you want restricted. I use three groups on mine, "friends", "close friends", and "church friends". I don't mind if close friends and church friends see everything, like my phone number and email, but I don't want my regular friends list to see that stuff. I probably shouldn't have used the word "friends" because it makes things a little confusing so on yours make it named something else, like maybe use two groups named "full" and "partial" or something. When you add someone new to your facebook, make sure you add them to a list or none of your privacy settings will work right. Go to your privacy settings. In the privacy page go to profile. Under each section in the drop down there's an entry that says "customize." In the window that pops up you get some options. If you don't want everyone on the planet to see that section uncheck "everyone on facebook." The next part gives you two choices, "only friends" and "friends of friends". I check "only friends" on that one. Under networks, if you want to block the info drop the menu down and select "none of my networks." Last, under "except for" type the name of the friends group you want restricted then select it from the options that pop up under it. Another nice option is to prevent people from posting on your wall. Too many times people have done a wall post instead of a private message and let everyone on the planet see a personal private message. Uncheck the box next to "Friends may post to my Wall" to keep that from happening. Here's what my main privacy page looks like. There's three more sections besides profile settings you can adjust too. Under privacy, search, you can prevent the entire planet from finding you on facebook, and when they do find you, you can adjust what they can see. I have my search set to everyone and unchecked my friend list so if someone wants to see my friends I have to actually add them as a friend first. On the privacy section for news feed and wall I unchecked everything. People don't need to know every single little thing I do on facebook.
  19. They didn't get any taxpayer money. All your taxes were already spent before the "stimulus" happened. They got paid in imaginary money our government printed in the form of new debt. Those "bonuses" that got paid were already stipulated in contracts that the government knew about before the money was handed out. The stimulus bills had text in them that specifically covered those bonuses. After they were paid the government and media used that topic to once again assault capitalism and private business and demonize them to the people. There aren't many people who can successfully run a major corporation. If you want to drive out the ones who do then not paying them what they're worth is a great way to turn some other nation into the economic capital of the world after they leave the USA.
  20. I drank a ton of Tazo chai till I rejoined the church and found it was made with black tea. I went on a hunt and now drink this: The Republic of Tea - Republic Red Chai (50 Tea Bags) It's chai tea made by taking rooibos which is a red tea from Africa and adding a bunch of chai type spices. It does not violate the WoW since it does not contain black or green tea and is caffeine free. A little honey brings out the flavor of the rooibos and makes it especially delicious. I usually fill a coffee cup a little less than halfway, nuke it till it's boiling, brew the tea, then fill the cup the rest of the way with milk to give it that chai creaminess.
  21. I was in the last dance festival at the rose bowl in 1985 and had a vhs copy of the tv broadcast that has long since died. I've been wondering if there's still copies of the video anywhere. If anyone has a copy could you please let me know. I've been wanting to show my wife and kids what we did. Thanks!
  22. Your feelings come from you believing her past is important for some reason. We ignore things we do not think are important and focus on things we think are. The more important something is to you the more you will dwell on it. For some reason you feel her past is important. Since you did marry her, when you said your vows you declared to the whole world that you would stay with her in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, and you declared that you accepted her with all her faults and her past. Unfortunately it sounds like you didn't really accept her as she was when you married her. The most important thing here is that you do not burden her with your issues. This is something you've got to figure out how to deal with on your own. If she knows her past is affecting you this much you run the risk of creating a lot of regret in her mind, and that is terrible for continued honesty and communication between you two. First you have to figure out why it matters to you. Why is her past so important to you? There could be any number of reasons why it's such an important issue to you. I've felt this way before and one time it was because I judged her by her past, which then led to me feeling like I had to forgive her. If you do not judge then there is no need to forgive. If you do not see fault in someone's actions then there is no reason to forgive. You have to remember that there is only one person who has the right to judge and forgive, even though it is so easy to take that job on ourselves. So take some time out and figure out why it matters so much to you. Figure out why her past is important to your brain. It's common for things to be important to us without having the slightest idea why. Only by sitting down and thinking about it can you figure out why your brain won't let go of this.
  23. We are monotheistic. In our reality, in our universe, in our everything there is only one God. Hindus believe there are multiple Gods in our universe and they can pick and choose which to worship which makes them polytheistic. We do not have any option but to worship our one Heavenly Father. We do not get multiple Gods to choose from.
  24. Do you go to church so you can be liked and missed or do you go because you believe this church is true? I left the church when I was 17 because I confused God with his followers. I left because of how the people treated me, not because I stopped believing. I'm back now because I realized that church is about God, not about who cares about me and who doesn't. The best way to be missed is to be involved. If you volunteer to help with youth, with the missionaries, with scouting, or anything really I guarantee you will be missed if you don't show up for a couple weeks.
