  1. I am a primary school teacher - my children are 8-9 years old (turning 9-10 during the school year). We teach all general subjects - maths, reading, writing, science, social science, technology, P.E, music, dance, drama and whatever else gets thrown in for good measure :)
  2. The number killed is now up to 113 with 120 inside the CTV building that has collapsed leaving no hope of survivors. Between 16 and 22 people are thought to have been in the spire of the cathedral when it collapsed. Then there are the unknown numbers of people who may have been killed in alleyways, streets and vehicles. The neurologist I saw earlier this year said it is easier to prevent them than deal with them once they get started. That said I am still trying to find something that is really effective in controlling them

  5. VIDEO: Helicopter footage of Christchurch after quake - National - Video - 3 News (video) The liquefaction is astonishing - many streets are under water. The Christchurch cathedral has collapsed on one side and there are very likely people who have died as the spire of the cathedral collapsed. The city was barely over last year's 7.2 quake (that was 33 km deep and had no fatalities) and this one, though a smaller magnitude, has caused so much more damage and loss. people are still trapped in buildings - it is amazing they have survived in some of them with the damage done to them.
  6. I know there is a temple in Hamilton (in the North Island) but I don't think there is one further down. I did find this this from the LDS site: 6.3 Quake Hits Christchurch 6.3 Quake Hits Christchurch 22 February 2011 CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — The New Zealand Herald reports that there are “multiple fatalities” after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Christchurch a few hours ago (12.51pm local time). All Mormon missionaries in the area are safe and well, according to Clive Jolliffe, Wellington Mission President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church leaders are contacting members of the Church throughout the city to confirm the safety and well-being of all Latter-day Saints in the affected region so immediate support can be mobilised. A Church Physical Facilities Department employee, Norm Scirkovich, was in Christchurch when the quake hit. He reports that chapels belonging to the Church have been substantially damaged including cracked walls, separation of slabs and severe liquefaction.” “The ground is covered in sand due to the liquefaction and upheaval from below the ground surface,” Scirkovich said, standing outside the Church’s Avonside Chapel. “All the surrounding roads in the immediate area are flooded, cars are up to their doors in mud, bridges have been compressed and deformed.” Further assessment is ongoing.
  7. Some are not - there are confirmed fatalities already and there are people trapped they are trying to rescue before it gets dark. Not to mention the risk of fire (one building with an unknown number of people trapped inside is on fire)
  8. Christchurch in New Zealand's South Island has been hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 5km, centered 10 km south of the city centre. 5th UPDATE: Earthquake Hits Christchurch, Wrecks Cathedral - WSJ.com Christchurch Earthquake | Christchurch Cathedral's Top Destroyed (photos)
  9. I have been getting them since I was 5. I am on Pizotifen/sandomigran and Nortriptyline as preventatives. When I get a migraine I have found migraine specific pain relief (such as Imigran/Maxalt) don't even touch the pain so I now take Maxalt for nausea with Voltaren and Oxycontin as pain relief for three days at a time - 20mg Oxycontin/75mg Voltaren twice a day. The 20mg Oxycontin doesn't really touch it now so it will have to be increased with the next one. I find they last three days at least (with pain) but can take up to six weeks for appetite, energy and vision to return to normal. I find I have to get plenty of sleep and keep stress levels low and steady. My husband says that since our red meat consumption has dropped my migraine has increased - possibly due to lower levels of iron or b vitamins and increasing magnesium intake can help too as people who get migraine are more likely to have lower levels of these vitamins.
  10. An absolutely heartbreaking story and unfortunately there will be more to come with 70 missing (although that number may have changed of course) Heartbreaking scenes in Grantham as search for bodies continues
  11. Western Victoria is now being hit by floods with flash flood warnings being issued for South Australia. Over 350 evacuated in Victoria's floods Victorian town threatened as reservoir overflows - ABC Western Victoria - Australian Broadcasting Corporation
  12. I stand corrected. A friend in Nova Scotia was saying they hadn't heard a lot about it - the congresswoman who was shot was getting more news time. I shouldn't make generalisations.
  13. Don't know if you are getting any coverage of this in the US (I know Canada is not hearing much about it) or if this is posted elsewhere on site but these floods are devastating Queensland. There are 70 people missing and ten confirmed dead. 200,000 people has been evacuated as the flooding covers an area the size of France and Germany combined. The Brisbane CBD has been evacuated and the river has flooded its banks. There are flood warnings in place for New South Wales as river levels there continue to rise. 14. I feel for him, for I think it's very scary to be in a world that has no loving Heavenly Father, no structure, to striving for the good. It's cold. As PC said, don't make the mistake of thinking those of us who do not believe in a God are perpetually scared or completely lacking in morals and the ability to do good because we don't follow a text that tells us what is acceptable. As long as you are both happy with the choice the other has made (religion or not) and can respect that they have the right to believe as they do there is no reason why you can't make it work. You will encounter problems if either one of you feels that your way is the only way and the other should change to fit with that. (That all made sense in my head - hopefully it all makes sense in writing )

  16. I have always had a curiosity about religion and what others believe (although I am atheist myself). I also believe that if you are going to comment on something you should at least have researched it (for want of a better word) - preferably from first hand sources not from the opinions of those who are not a part of what you are looking into (if that makes sense). It is also difficult to find websites where issues that can be quite, how do I put it - divisive, inflammatory, heated - can be discussed without resorting to accusations of trolling, name calling and foul language (religious, political, step-parenting sites can get quite heated!). That you can get an interesting discussion/debate that sparks your interest to find out more. So that is why I am here even if I do not post very often, I often lurk :) and read and increase my knowledge.
  17. Has your wife known for five years that you were sending money to another woman to support a child you thought might be yours but you weren't sure? You have managed to set up a step family situation without even trying and now your wife is going to have to deal with another woman being involved in your lives to one extent or another for at least the next 21 years and after that for a wedding, grandchildren etc. It is a big thing to ask her to take that on when she certainly didn't sign up for that. She didn't sign up for your family's income to be shared with another person because of a foolish decision you made. I really hope that this sending of money abroad is not something you have kept from her or lied about. This child is going to impact on her life regardless of where the child and it's mother live. She needs to be able to make choices about her life without being made to feel as though she is the bad guy. She needs to be able to do this without pressure - you have had time to get used to this. She hasn't.
  18. it's stupid to expect the mother to pay child support to the father. She ended by saying I should just let it go and forget about it. And which planet is she living on? A parent, regardless of gender needs to financially support their child/ren. Being a woman does not excuse you from that responsibility. I would keep a diary of all and any interaction you have with her as well as any non-payments. With any luck you will not have to use it once you have filed the motion with the courts but it doesn't hurt to keep a trail. As your attorney said, keep doing everything by the book and hopefully you can get this sorted quickly rather than having it drag on. Best of luck.
  19. Mine seemed to hit its peak around 1900 (974th) so it has never really been that popular. I have met a few people with my name but they tend to be a generation older than me.
  20. Have you been watching Return of the King, or Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? Most of them - some bits I got a close up view of the palms of my hands though. :) The film Arachnophobia was made using spiders whose natural habitat is only a few kilometres from where I live (they don't travel outside their area and are apparently at risk) Don't click the link if you don't like spiders: 15 fantastic facts:Avondale spider, our Hollywood star Coming across a bush spider (about the a bit bigger than an Avondale) in my gumboot really sealed the 'don't like spiders' deal for me. Now my husband is responsible for spider removal while I deal with wetas. Weta
  21. It's spiders I can't abide - 6ft tall, waving their long, hairy legs at me and gnashing their razor sharp teeth and making it their mission to scare me half to death. (Okay so I might be exaggerating a teensy bit)
  22. I have obviously read more about women going on missions than men :) I don't know where he has gone specifically as she did not always have a lot of volume Thank you for clearing that up for me :)
  23. Just a quick question. We have recently had our school speech finals. One of the girls did hers on her brother who is currently in the Pacific Islands on mission. He went when he was 19. Maybe I have misread posts but I had the general idea that missions were generally taken on in the early 20s or have I misunderstood? It seemed to be quite young or is that a normal age?
  24. This is the only temple in NZ: Hamilton New Zealand Temple Main Would be interested to have a look around.
